Book excerpt: In order to investigate the applicability of the Cascade-Exciton model (CEM) of nuclear reactions to fission cross sections and hoping to learn more about intermediate-energy fission, the authors use an extended version of the CEM, as realized in the code CEM95 to perform a detailed analysis of proton- and neutron-induced fission cross sections of 2°9Bi and 2°8Pb nuclei and of the linear momentum transfer to the fissioning nuclei in the 45--500 meV energy range.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until recently there has been very little cross section data for neutron-induced fission in the intermediate energy region, primarily because no suitable neutron source has existed. At Los Alamos, the WNR target-4 facility provides a high-intensity source of neutrons nearly ideal for fission measurements extending from a fraction of a MeV to several hundred MeV. This paper summarizes the status of fission cross section data in the intermediate energy range (En> 30 MeV) and presents our fission cross section data for 235U and 238U compared to intranuclear cascade and statistical model predictions.

Download or read book Nuclear Cross Sections for 95-Mev Neutrons written by James DeJuren and published by . This book was released on 1950 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The total cross sections of twelve different elements were measured using the neutron beam from the 184-in. cyclotron, operating with deuterons. Bismuth fission ionization chambers were employed as both monitor and detector in conventional 'good geometry' attenuation measurements in the neutron flux emerging from the 3-in. diameter collimating port in the 10-ft-thick concrete shielding. The mean energy of detection of the neutrons in this experiment is estimated to be 95 Mev. Measurements were also made with a monitor and detector placed inside the concrete shielding where an intense neutron flux over a large area could be obtained. Attenuators of four different elements were placed in front of the detector in a 'poor geometry' arrangement so that attenuation was due essentially to inelastic collisions which degrade the neutron energy below the fission threshold. A second detector was placed outside the concrete shielding In the collimated neutron beam in line with the neutron source, absorber, and first detector. Attenuation in it is caused by both inelastic and elastic scattering. By this arrangement the ratio of inelastic to total cross section can be determined directly in one experiment. The nuclear radii as calculated from the observed cross section, using the theory of the transparent nucleus, vary as 1.38 x 10(exp-13) A(exp(1/3)) cm. In this energy range the ratios of the inelastic to total cross sections are all less than one-half.

This book was released on 2002-12-13 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of the DANF conference was to present and discuss new theoretical and experimental results in the field of nuclear fission dynamics. The conference program was designed to cover a wide range of physical phenomena including spontaneous and induced fission at low and intermediate energies and fragmentation of hot nuclei. Among the topics discussed at the conference were: the development of various theories, experiments on the synthesis of superheavy elements, fusion-fission processes and the decay of complex nuclear systems, binary and ternary fission, nuclear structure of neutron-rich nuclei and the peculiarities of exotic nuclear reactions. Attention was also paid to the recent progress in developing radioactive ion beam facilities. The development of new methods was also on the conference agenda.

Book Synopsis On the Photofission Cross Sections Near Threshold of Nuclei in the Region of the Very Heavy Elements by : Kenneth M. Clarke
Download or read book On the Photofission Cross Sections Near Threshold of Nuclei in the Region of the Very Heavy Elements written by Kenneth M. Clarke and published by . This book was released on 1958 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Variations in the photofission cross section near ''threshold'' with initial kind of nucleus were investigated for seven spheroidal nuclei in the region of atomic numbers 90, 92, 93. The photofission cross sections at the two discrete energies 6.14 and 7.0 Mev were determined for the following even-even nuclides: Th-232, U-234, U-236, and U-238; and also the odd-A nuclides. U-233, U-235 and Np-237. This problem was suggested partly by the qualitative proposals of A. Bohr concerning odd-parity states and low energy photofission and partly by the results of betatron studies at low energies on the very heavy elements.
Book Synopsis Mesons And Nuclei At Intermediate Energies - Proceedings Of The International Conference by : Mikhail Kh Khankhasayev
Download or read book Mesons And Nuclei At Intermediate Energies - Proceedings Of The International Conference written by Mikhail Kh Khankhasayev and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1995-02-17 with total page 882 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the main goals of intermediate energy nuclear physics, which serves an important role as a bridge between nuclear and particle physics, is to construct the theory of strong interaction phenomena in terms of conventional degrees of freedom (nucleons, deltas and mesons) as well as of quark degrees of freedom. The main topics to be discussed at this conference are the interaction of pions and other mesons with nuclei at intermediate energies and the role of mesonic degrees of freedom in nuclear reactions, including photon, hadron and heavy ion induced reactions. Both theoretical and experimental results will be included.Over the past two decades, the Meson Factories, including LAMPF, TRIUMF, and PSI, have provided us with systematic experimental information on hadron-hadron and hadron-nucleus dynamics. Major accelerators of JINR are also suitable for studying problems in Intermediate Energy Nuclear Physics. At the present time, first experiments have been performed with the proton beams at the Moscow Meson Factory of INR. One of the purposes of this conference is to introduce the intermediate-energy physics community to the possibility of utilizing the facilities of JINR and INR during the next decade.
