Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. ABC

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the Gordian knot of our time, the closely coupled problems of electricity poverty for billions of humans, and global warming for all humans. The central thesis of the book is that nuclear power is not only the only solution, it is a highly desirable solution, cheaper, safer, less intrusive on nature than all the alternatives. Just about everybody, including most pro-nuclear folks, accept the fact that nuclear electricity is inherently expensive. Nuclear power is not inherently expensive. It is inherently cheap. This book argues that conventional nuclear power should cost less than three cents per kilowatt hour. But nuclear power is expensive, prohibitively so in most parts of the planet. The reason why nuclear power is so expensive is a regulatory regime in which the regulator is mandated to increase costs to the point where nuclear power is at best barely economic. The operative buzzword is ALARA, As Low As Reasonably Achievable. In such a system, any technological improvement which should lower cost simply provides regulators with more room to drive costs up. This same regime does an excellent job of stifling competition and technological progress by erecting layers of barriers to entry. The goal is not just to make nuclear electricity as cheap as coal or gas fired electricity. The goal must be to keep pushing the cost of nuclear power down and down, allowing us to replace fossil fuels almost everywhere. Imagine what we could do with 2 cents per kWh power in electrifying transportation and producing carbon neutral synfuels. This can only be done in a harshly competitive environment. We must force the providers of nuclear power to compete with everybody. If nuclear power is to be allowed to cleave the Gordian knot of electricity poverty and global warming, then we must completely change the way we regulate nuclear electricity. This book makes the case for this change and outlines what the replacement system needs to look like. ~

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On November 10, 2017, Pope Francis became the first pontiff in the nuclear era to take a complete stand against nuclear weapons, even as a form of deterrence. At a Vatican conference of leaders in the field of disarmament, he made it clear that the possession of the bomb itself was immoral. A World Free from Nuclear Weapons presents the pope’s address and original testimony from Nobel Peace Prize laureates, religious leaders, diplomats, and civil society activists. These luminaries, which include the pope and a Hiroshima survivor, make the moral case against possessing, manufacturing, and deploying nuclear arms. Drew Christiansen, a member of the Holy See delegation to the 2017 United Nations conference that negotiated the Treaty to Prohibit Nuclear Weapons, helps readers to understand this conference in its historical context. A World Free from Nuclear Weapons is a critical companion for scholars of modern Catholicism, moral theology, and peace studies, as well as policymakers working on effective disarmament. It shows how the Church’s revised position presents an opportunity for global leaders to connect disarmament to larger movements for peace, pointing toward future action.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers relevant concepts in nuclear cardiology, combining imaging techniques and clinical data to do so. Today, nuclear cardiology is a worldwide discipline connected to the broader field of cardiovascular imaging. The combination of clinical aspects (symptoms, medications, previous cardiac procedures), ancillary exams and nuclear images is key to decision-making in clinical practice. Thus, a book on this topic is essential to provide better outcomes for cardiology patients. The chapters cover a comprehensive range of topics in current cardiology practice, such as ambulatory patients, patients in emergency settings, patients after complex cardiac procedures, and patients during and after the use of cancer therapies that are potentially toxic for the heart (cardio-oncology). As such, multiple clinical scenarios are also presented: patients with suspected coronary disease, patients with heart failure of unknown origin, patients with acute chest pain in the emergency department, patients with suspected pulmonary embolism, patients with complications of the left ventricular assist device, etc. Furthermore, the book describes nuclear cardiology procedures and techniques, discusses the main clinical indications and scenarios for each procedure, presents new technological advances in the field (machine learning and artificial intelligence tools), and mentions the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Given its scope, the book offers a valuable guide and videos for various medical professionals, especially cardiologists and nuclear physicians.

Book excerpt: Over the past 30 years, numerous concerns have been raised in the literature regarding the capability of static modeling approaches such as the event-tree (ET)/fault-tree (FT) methodology to adequately account for the impact of process/hardware/software/firmware/human interactions on nuclear power plant safety assessment, and methodologies to augment the ET/FT approach have been proposed. Often referred to as dynamic probabilistic risk/safety assessment (DPRA/DPSA) methodologies, which use a time-dependent phenomenological model of system evolution along with a model of its stochastic behavior to model for possible dependencies among failure events. The book contains a collection of papers that describe at existing plant level applicable DPRA/DPSA tools, as well as techniques that can be used to augment the ET/FT approach when needed. Contents: Shutdown Probabilistic Safety Assessment (Marko Čepin) Dynamic Probabilistic Risk Assessment Model Validation and Application -- Experience with ADS-IDAC, Version 2.0 (Kevin Coyne and Ali Mosleh) MCDET: A Tool for Integrated Deterministic Probabilistic Safety Analyses (Martina Kloos, Nadine Berner, Joerg Peschke and Josef Scheuer) Why Sequence Dynamics Matters in PSA: Checking Consistency of Probabilistic and Deterministic Analyses (J M Izquierdo, J Hortal, M Sánchez and E Meléndez) Level 2 Probabilistic Risk Assessment Using Dynamic Event Tree Analysis (Douglas M Osborn, Tunc Aldemir, Richard S Denning and Diego Mandelli) EDF Experience in Integrated Deterministic Probabilistic Safety Analysis for Risk Assessment (Valentin Rychkov) Offsite Power Reliability Assessment for Nuclear Power Plants: An Application of Dynamic Reliability to Power Systems (Pierre Henneaux and Pierre-Etienne Labeau) Stochastic Differential Equations in Dynamic Reliability (Vytis Kopustinskas, Henrikas Pragarauskas and Juozas Augutis) Dynamic Event Tree Modeling of a Reactor Coolant Pump Seal LOCA (Kyle Metzroth, Richard Denning and Tunc Aldemir) Markov/Cell-to-Cell Mapping Technique for Stochastic Modeling of Dynamic Systems (Tunc Aldemir) Dynamic Flowgraph Methodology (DFM) Modeling of Nuclear and Advanced Technology System Risk and Reliability Scenarios (Sergio Guarro and Michael Yau) Dynamic Behavior of Nuclear Power Plant State Under Severe Accident Conditions: Analysis by the GO-FLOW Methodology and the Consideration of Loop Structures (Takeshi Matsuoka) Dynamic Accident Scenario Generation, Modeling and Post-Processing for the Integrated Deterministic and Probabilistic Safety Analysis of Nuclear Power Plants (Francesco Di Maio and Enrico Zio) Software Behavior Modeling for Dynamic Probabilistic Risk Assessment: Perspectives (C S Smidts) Readership: Graduate students, researchers and professionals in the field of nuclear engineering, risk analysis and reliability engineering. Keywords: Probabilistic Risk Assessment;Nuclear Energy;Nuclear Plant Reliability and SafetyReview: Key Features: Except for PSAM, ESREL and PSA conference proceedings which may contain some relevant papers, the most recent review publication on similar topics is Proceedings of the International Workshop on Dynamic Reliability, C Smidts, T Aldemir (Eds.), The Center for Risk and Reliability, University of Maryland, USA (2007) In addition to capturing more recent developments, the proposed publication differs from 2007 publication by concentrating on nuclear energy and also containing papers on risk management The book is a compilation of papers by almost all prominent researchers active in the field of dynamic probabilistic safety/ris

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the economic history of the nuclear program in Spain, from its inception in the 1950s to the nuclear moratorium in the early 1980s, and investigates the economic, financial and business origins of atomic energy in Spain. The actual dimension of the Spanish nuclear sector, which exceeded the relative economic and political clout of the country at the time, reflects the combination of domestic and foreign interests. Each contribution inserts the Spanish case within the international development of nuclear energy, but also shows how the Spanish nuclear program came about, how it was financed, and who the main architects and beneficiaries at the industrial, financial, commercial and banking levels were; all without losing sight of the energy policy aspects such as energy mix and energy security. The volume provides useful analysis and sources for a variety of core fields across the social sciences including economic history of post-war Europe, industrial and energy policy, international relations and history of technology.
