Book excerpt: The International Conference on "Nuclear Structure Study with Neutrons" or ganized in Budapest between 31st July and 5th August. 1972. was the successor of a meeting held seven years ago in Antwerp. The close links between the two conferences were revealed not in name alone but. more importantly. in the choice of subjects discussed. As in Antwerp. the lectures and contributions to the Budapest Conference could be grouped under the following five main headings: nuclear spectroscopy; the optical model; the statistical model and intermediate structures; the mechanism of neutron capture and non-statistical effects; and, finally. miscellaneous special topics. The invited papers on the one hand summarizing recent developments and current thinking in one of the above main topics. and the other surveying the most important results of the contributed papers submitted to the Conference. were presented on the plenary sessions. Most of the contributed papers were read in full on three parallel sessions. This volume contains the complete text of all the lectures delivered in the plenary sessions and abstracts of the contributed papers. The invited talks were presented at the Conference in a rather random order because of technical reasons, it seemed. however, more sensible to change their order according to their subjects and to print them grouped under the above main headings. Further more we divided the Proceedings into two main parts, the first containing only the lectures of summarizing character. the second including the abstracts of the contributions together with the surveying talks.

Book excerpt: The reactor-based laboratory at the Institut Laue-Langevin is recognized as the world's most productive and reliable source of slow neutrons for the study of low energy particle and nuclear physics. The book highlights the impact of about 600 very diverse publications about work performed in these fields during the past more than 30 years of reactor operation at this institute. On one hand neutrons are used as a tool to generate nuclei in excited states for studying their structure and decay, in particular fission. Uniquely sensitive experiments can tell us a great deal about the symmetry characteristics of nuclei and their fission properties. On the other hand, studies with slow neutrons as the object of investigation are complementary to studies at huge particle accelerators. Experiments carried out at the ILL contribute to elucidate basic questions about the building blocks of the Universe by analyzing very precisely subtle neutron properties.
Book Synopsis Nuclear Structure from a Simple Perspective by : R. F. Casten
Download or read book Nuclear Structure from a Simple Perspective written by R. F. Casten and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1990-04-26 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a useful survey and assessment of the study of low-energy collective and single particle excitations of medium and heavy nuclei. An ideal resource for graduate students, the book covers both experimental and theoretical perspectives. The author's simple intuitive approach will help the reader to understand the empirical systematics as well as detailed model calculations, without recourse to complex--and often--confusing formalism.

Book Synopsis Studying the Role of Nuclear Structure Effects in Neutron-induced Reactions Using GEANIE at LANSCE. by :
Download or read book Studying the Role of Nuclear Structure Effects in Neutron-induced Reactions Using GEANIE at LANSCE. written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Efforts to model and measure absolute neutron-induced reaction cross sections have for the most part been limited by experimental techniques to neutron energies found in reactors and light-ion fusion reactions (i.e., t(d, n)[alpha] etc.). This can in large part be attributed to the difficulty involved in making high-flux mono-energetic neutron beams with E{sub n}> 14 MeV. The result has been a lack of guidance for (n, xnypz[alpha]) reaction modeling for E{sub n}> 1-2 MeV. These limitations become particularly exacerbated in nuclei where structure effects (i.e., near shell closures, high deformation etc.) or fission complicates the models. The GEANIE spectrometer at LANSCE/WNR fills this gap in experimental technique by allowing for efficient measurement of neutron-induced [gamma]-ray partial cross sections over a wide range of incident neutron energies (1

Book excerpt: In stable and weakly bound neutron-rich nuclei, a resonance-like concentration of dipole states has been observed for excitation energies below the neutron-separation energy. This clustering of strong dipole states has been named the Pygmy Dipole Resonance (PDR) in contrast to the Giant Dipole Resonance (GDR) that dominates the E1 response. Understanding the PDR is presently of great interest in nuclear structure and nuclear astrophysics. High-sensitivity studies of E1 and M1 transitions in closed-shell nuclei using monoenergetic and 100% linearly-polarized photon beams are presented.
Book Synopsis Nuclear Structure Studies Via Neutron Interactions. [0 to 20 MeV, Dispersive Optical Model Approach]. by :
Download or read book Nuclear Structure Studies Via Neutron Interactions. [0 to 20 MeV, Dispersive Optical Model Approach]. written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparison has been made between the empirical integrated strengths and external R-functions and the predictions of a dispersive optical model for the n-[sup 208]Pb system, for partial waves through f[sub 7/2]. Parameters of a constant geometry model give a fair representation of the experimental results. A hint of the need for a parity dependence in one of the model parameters is seen in the two data and in thetotal cross section in the low-energy region. Other research performed consisted of: (1) refinement of the resonance analysis of the n-[sup 208]Pb system, resulting in more definitive J[sup [pi]] assignments and external R-functions consistent over the neutron energy range [80--1760 keV]; (2) background correction and processing of n-[sup 88]Sr differential scattering cross section data for use with total cross section data for R-matrix analysis (3) measurement of the n-[sup 90]Zr differential scattering cross section at the 200-m flight path of the ORELA.
