Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nucleon optical model is widely used to calculate the elastic scattering cross-sections and polarisations for the interaction of neutrons and protons with atomic nuclei. The optical model potentials not only describe the scattering but also provide the wave functions needed to analyse a wide range of nuclear reactions. They also unify many aspects of nuclear reactions and nuclear structure. This book consists of a comprehensive introduction to the subject and a selection of papers by the author describing the optical model in detail. It contains full references to the original literature with many examples of the application of the model to the analysis of experimental data.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this article is to review the methods used in optical model calculations including automatic search techniques, and to indicate how to speed up the computations while retaining desired accuracy in the results. All the formulas are presented which are required to compute the final quantities of interest i.e. the differential elastic scattering cross sections, polarizations and total reaction cross section for particles of spin 0, 1/2 and 1 incident against 0-spin targets. The numerical solutions of the radial Schroedinger differential equations are discussed in some detail as these calculations represent an important part of the total computation. The equations are usually solved by the Runge-Kutta, Cowell or Noumerov methods which are subject to a local truncation error and can be programmed quite easily. These methods are compared with respect to speed and accuracy. The final errors in the coefficients of the scattering matrix are discussed and illustrated for a typical test case. Several methods for automatically searching over the parameter space for the best fit to the experimental data are described and compared, and a recommended search program is presented for which the estimated computing times and storage requirements on an IBM 7094 Mod I computer are given. This book was released on 1994 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While many nuclear models are important in calculations of nuclear data, the optical model usually provides the basic underpinning of analyses directed at data for applications. An overview is given here of experience in the Nuclear Theory and Applications Group at Los Alamos National Laboratory in the use of the optical model for calculations of nuclear cross section data for applied purposes. We consider the direct utilization of total, elastic, and reaction cross sections for neutrons, protons, deuterons, tritons, 3He and alpha particles in files of evaluated nuclear data covering the energy range of 0 to 200 MeV, as well as transmission coefficients for reaction theory calculations and neutron and proton wave functions direct-reaction and Feshbach-Kerman-Koonin analyses. Optical model codes such as SCAT and ECIS and the reaction theory codes COMNUC, GNASH FKK-GNASH, and DWUCK have primarily been used in our analyses. A summary of optical model parameterizations from past analyses at Los Alamos will be given, including detailed tabulations of the parameters for a selection of nuclei.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary Models of the Atomic Nucleus discusses nuclear structure and properties, expounding contemporary theoretical concepts of the low-energy nuclear processes underlying in nuclear models. This book focuses on subjects such as the optical nuclear model, unified or collective model, and deuteron stripping reaction. Other topics discussed include the basic nuclear properties; shell model; theoretical analysis of the shell model; and radiative transitions and alpha-decay. The deuteron theory and the liquid drop nuclear model with its application to fission theory are also mentioned, but only briefly discussed. This publication benefits students and researchers conducting work on nuclear physics, specifically on the constituents and interactions of the atomic nucleus.

Recent work on a coupled-channels potential for neutron reactions on {sup 241,243}Am and spherical neutron potential updates for 56Fe and 59Co will be presented, together with examples of their application in nuclear reaction calculations with the GNASH code system. New potentials utilized in evaluations at Livermore for 12C, 14N and 16O are described and additional potentials from earlier analyses at Los Alamos of Ti, V, and Ni data are made available for possible inclusion in the Reference Input Parameter Library (RIPL) for nuclear model calculations of nuclear data. Specific activities directed at development of the optical potential segment of the RIPL will be summarized.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A variety of standard problems in theoretical nuclear-structure physics is addressed by the well-documented computer codes presented in this book. Most of these codes were available up to now only through personal contact. The subject matter ranges from microscopic models (the shell, Skyrme-Hartree-Fock, and cranked Nilsson models) through collective excitations (RPA, IBA, and geometric model) to the relativistic impulse approximation, three-body calculations, variational Monte Carlo methods, and electron scattering. The 5 1/4'' high-density floppy disk that comes with the book contains the FORTRAN codes of the problems that are tackled in each of the ten chapters. In the text, the precise theoretical foundations and motivations of each model or method are discussed together with the numerical methods employed. Instructions for the use of each code, and how to adapt them to local compilers and/or operating systems if necessary, are included.
