Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last two decades significant advances have been made in the in vivo-diagnosis of gastrointestinal diseases. Although Ultrasound and CT as well as Endoscopy have had a major impact on the evaluation of liver, pancreas and bile diseases, there are a lot of indications for Nuclear Medicine procedures. These include new investigational procedures like esophageal scintigraphy, proof of bleeding sites, scintigraphy of inflammatory diseases, and intestinal resorption tests. Further, immunoscintigraphy with radiol- elled antibodies has gained wide-spread application especially in colon cancer. The differential diagnosis of liver tumors like haemangioma and focal nodular hyperplasia by means of blood pool and HID A-scintigraphy is nowadays a routine procedure. Other established methods like hepatobiliary scintigraphy and liver perfusion scintigraphy have proved to be reliable tools in the pre-and postoperative evaluation of patients with bile duct obstruction and portal hypertension. The aim of this book is to present the entire spectrum of Nuclear Medicine in Gastroenterology to our colleagues from internal medicine and surgery. Ultrasound and Sonography as well as CT will rule the field of gastroenterology, but there remain a certain number of unanswered questions. Nuclear Medicine provides a lot of reliable answers. H.J. Biersack and P.H. Cox July 1990 VB List of contributors Duncan M. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent advances in technology have greatly impacted upon the practice of nuclear medicine in general, and the approach to hepatobiliary diseases in particular. Empha sis is now placed more on non-invasive functional imaging with quantification, a feature unique to nuclear medicine and not available from any other competing diag nostic imaging modality. By providing a measure of severity of disease, quantification aids not only in timing of therapy but also for testing whether or not the chosen therapy has achieved the intended goals and objectives. This is the first textbook of its kind in the new millennium on nuclear hepatology to fully integrate quantitative physiology with morphology in the diagnosis of hepatobiliary diseases. The conception of nuclear hepatology occurred in the late 1940s with the introduc tion of radiocolloids, whose rate of clearance from blood was used as a measure of hepatic blood flow. Radiocolloid imaging of the liver, introduced first in the mid 1950s, was the most popular nuclear medicine imaging procedure in the 1970s and early 1980s, accounting for nearly 50% of the total workload in many nuclear medicine departments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiology Fundamentals is a concise introduction to the dynamic field of radiology for medical students, non-radiology house staff, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, radiology assistants, and other allied health professionals. The goal of the book is to provide readers with general examples and brief discussions of basic radiographic principles and to serve as a curriculum guide, supplementing a radiology education and providing a solid foundation for further learning. Introductory chapters provide readers with the fundamental scientific concepts underlying the medical use of imaging modalities and technology, including ultrasound, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and nuclear medicine. The main scope of the book is to present concise chapters organized by anatomic region and radiology sub-specialty that highlight the radiologist’s role in diagnosing and treating common diseases, disorders, and conditions. Highly illustrated with images and diagrams, each chapter in Radiology Fundamentals begins with learning objectives to aid readers in recognizing important points and connecting the basic radiology concepts that run throughout the text. It is the editors’ hope that this valuable, up-to-date resource will foster and further stimulate self-directed radiology learning—the process at the heart of medical education.

Pertinent clinical applications are emphasized rather than attempting to cover everything included in the several large comprehensive texts available in our field. This "practical" approach should make it an essential guide to nuclear medicine physicians, technologists, students and interested clinicians alike.

Book excerpt: As chairman of the European Association of Nuclear Medi cine (EANM) 2001 annual meeting, I tried to reach two goals: a "universal nuclear medicine" congress where all people could speak and learn using the same language, and a full exploration of the possibility of making a diagnosis through global imaging. I am personally convinced that nuclear med icine techniques in the detection of infection and inflamma tion are essential, and in the near future their role and clinical impact will be impressive. As stated during the meeting, this topic will be one of the major and expanding fields of interest for nuclear medicine. During the post-congress meetings organized in Capri by Alberto Signore and Mauro Liberatore for each topic, there was a leading expert for the clinical, radiological and nuclear medicine aspects. This interaction was crucial for the quality of the discussion and the definition of flow charts that will be useful for all the medical community. These meetings, where for each topic there is full coverage of all the aspects of imaging, are, in my opinion, the most fruitful and useful for the progression and diffusion of nu clear medicine procedures. May 2002 Prof. Marco Salvatore Chairman of the EANM Congress 2001 Some 35 years ago, a French singer sold millions of records with a song, trying to tell the world "Capri c'est fini" - Capri is over.
