Book excerpt: Zambia is a nation with a long record of peace, that has enjoyed decades of constitutional rule, and even, in recent years, an increasingly competitive democracy. Peace, constitutionalism, democracy, and nationhood face constant challenges, such as in the elections of 2006 when the ugly language of ethnic confrontation found renewed currency. Moreover, Zambia's economic record and prospects are less equivocal: after over four decades, per capita incomes are lower than they were at the dawn of independence. Historical Dictionary of Zambia, Fourth Edition contains a chronology, an introduction, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has more than 1,000 cross-referenced entries on important personalities as well as aspects of the country’s politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent resource for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Zambia.

Book Synopsis Town Nyanja: a learner's guide to Zambia's emerging national language by : Andrew Gray
Download or read book Town Nyanja: a learner's guide to Zambia's emerging national language written by Andrew Gray and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The first practical guide to Nyanja language as it's actually spoken in modern, urban Zambia. For too long, visitors to the Zambian capital Lusaka have arrived with phrasebooks and dictionaries of traditional Nyanja, the kind spoken in Malawi and Eastern Province, only to find themselves laughed at or misunderstood. Zambians living in town today don't speak that kind of Nyanja. Their language has evolved. This Nyanja isn't 'pure', it isn't standardised, and it's only just beginning to be written down. But if you want to actually communicate with the people of Lusaka in their own language - on the street, on the bus, in the market or elsewhere - this is the Nyanja you need. The book includes an introduction to Nyanja sounds and grammar, over 300 useful everyday words and phrases, and A-Z Nyanja-English and English-Nyanja vocabulary."--Publisher's website.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As late as the beginning of the nineteenth century, despite the many years of direct contact with European traders and the influx of European goods, most African societies still produced their own iron and its products, or obtained them from neighbouring communities through local trade. The quality of iron products was such that, despite competition from European imports, local iron production survived into the early twentieth century in some parts of the continent. The production process covered prospecting, mining, smelting, and forging. Different types of ore were available all over the continent and were extracted by shallow or alluvial mining. A variety of skills were required for building furnaces, producing charcoal, smelting, and forging iron into goods. Iron production was generally not an enclave activity but a process that fulfilled the totality of socio-economic needs. It also fit the gender division of labour within communities.

Book Synopsis Modernity and Its Malcontents by : Jean Comaroff
Download or read book Modernity and Its Malcontents written by Jean Comaroff and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1993-11 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What role does ritual play in the everyday lives of modern Africans? How are so-called "traditional" cultural forms deployed by people seeking empowerment in a world where "modernity" has failed to deliver on its promises? Some of the essays in Modernity and Its Malcontents address familiar anthropological issues—like witchcraft, myth, and the politics of reproduction—but treat them in fresh ways, situating them amidst the polyphonies of contemporary Africa. Others explore distinctly nontraditional subjects—among them the Nigerian popular press and soul-eating in Niger—in such a way as to confront the conceptual limits of Western social science. Together they demonstrate how ritual may be powerfuly mobilized in the making of history, present, and future. Addressing challenges posed by contemporary African realities, the authors subject such concepts as modernity, ritual, power, and history to renewed critical scrutiny. Writing about a variety of phenomena, they are united by a wish to preserve the diversity and historical specificity of local signs and practices, voices and perspectives. Their work makes a substantial and original contribution toward the historical anthropology of Africa. The contributors, all from the Africanist circle at the University of Chicago, are Adeline Masquelier, Deborah Kaspin, J. Lorand Matory, Ralph A. Austen, Andrew Apter, Misty L. Bastian, Mark Auslander, and Pamela G. Schmoll.
Book Synopsis Language - Nation - Identity by : Elizaveta Khachaturyan
Download or read book Language - Nation - Identity written by Elizaveta Khachaturyan and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is language one of the main components of national identity? How does it define oneâ (TM)s national identity? Does its role change for each nation? These are the crucial questions that are explored in this volume, which describes the Nation-Identity dyad through the prism of language. The centuries-old theory on the role language plays in shaping national identity is discussed here in a new perspective appropriate to the 21st century. The analysis is provided from various points of view, and details changes in the relationship between these three elements (language, nation, and identity) in different historical, social and linguistic contexts. The book looks at several different languages in its analysis, such as English, Portuguese, French, Spanish and Italian. It brings together a wide variety of approaches to the linguistic educational system in a multilingual Africa and in countries with a rich migration history, like Australia and United States. It also discusses the role literature and textbooks play in shaping the sense of national belonging. The answers to the central questions described above are both highly individual and very general, but will, no doubt, stimulate the readerâ (TM)s reflection about â oemeâ and the â oeotherâ .

Book Synopsis The Spirit Dimension in African Christianity by : Silas S. Ncozana
Download or read book The Spirit Dimension in African Christianity written by Silas S. Ncozana and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2002 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of Africa was transformed into a Christian continent within a few generations, changing profoundly the nature of the continent's religion; but the spirits of the old religions did not necessarily disappear. 'Spirit possession' and 'spirit affliction' cults, often institutionalised in African religions, are still common in many societies, also those which are now predominantly Christian. Silas Ncozana's work sets out to explore the implications of spirit possession for the Tumbuka people, the largest ethnic group in the North of Malawi - about ten percent of the overall population, many of whom converted to Christianity in the latter part of the nineteenth century. He considers both the functions of traditional spirit cults, and the Christian Holy Spirit describing how the Tumbuka moved away from possession in a traditional sense to possession with a Christian understanding of spirit; and how these people built traditional cultural expression into a new culture. The author then outlines the implications of these shifts for pastoral care.
Book Synopsis Languages in Africa by : Elizabeth C. Zsiga
Download or read book Languages in Africa written by Elizabeth C. Zsiga and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-03 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People in many African communities live within a series of concentric circles when it comes to language. In a small group, a speaker uses an often unwritten and endangered mother tongue that is rarely used in school. A national indigenous language—written, widespread, sometimes used in school—surrounds it. An international language like French or English, a vestige of colonialism, carries prestige, is used in higher education, and promises mobility—and yet it will not be well known by its users. The essays in Languages in Africa explore the layers of African multilingualism as they affect language policy and education. Through case studies ranging across the continent, the contributors consider multilingualism in the classroom as well as in domains ranging from music and film to politics and figurative language. The contributors report on the widespread devaluing and even death of indigenous languages. They also investigate how poor teacher training leads to language-related failures in education. At the same time, they demonstrate that education in a mother tongue can work, linguists can use their expertise to provoke changes in language policies, and linguistic creativity thrives in these multilingual communities.
Book Synopsis Dictionary of Languages by : Andrew Dalby
Download or read book Dictionary of Languages written by Andrew Dalby and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-28 with total page 754 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering the political, social and historical background of each language, Dictionary of Languages offers a unique insight into human culture and communication. Every language with official status is included, as well as all those that have a written literature and 175 'minor' languages with special historical or anthropological interest. We see how, with the rapidly increasing uniformity of our culture as media's influence spreads, more languages have become extinct or are under threat of extinction. The text is highlighted by maps and charts of scripts, while proverbs, anecdotes and quotations reveal the features that make a language unique.
