Book excerpt: The author defines and proves a noncommutative generalization of a formula relating the Maslov index of a triple of Lagrangian subspaces of a symplectic vector space to eta-invariants associated to a pair of Lagrangian subspaces. The noncommutative Maslov index, defined for modules over a $C *$-algebra $\mathcal{A}$, is an element in $K_0(\mathcal{A})$. The generalized formula calculates its Chern character in the de Rham homology of certain dense subalgebras of $\mathcal{A}$. The proof is a noncommutative Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem for a particular Dirac operator twisted by an $\mathcal{A}$-vector bundle. The author develops an analytic framework for this type of index problem.

Let A and B be C*-algebras which are equipped with continuous actions of a second countable, locally compact group G. We define a notion of equivariant asymptotic morphism, and use it to define equivariant E-theory groups EULG(A, B) which generalize the E-theory groups of Connes and Higson. We develop the basic properties of equivariant E-theory, including a composition product and six-term exact sequences in both variables, and apply our theory to the problem of calculating K-theory for group C*-algebras. Our main theorem gives a simple criterion for the assembly map of Baum and Connes to be an isomorphism. The result plays an important role in the work of Higson and Kasparov on the Bau m-Connes conjecture for groups which act isometrically and metrically properly on Hilbert space

Book excerpt: In June 2000, the Clay Mathematics Institute organized an Instructional Symposium on Noncommutative Geometry in conjunction with the AMS-IMS-SIAM Joint Summer Research Conference. These events were held at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts from June 18 to 29, 2000. The Instructional Symposium consisted of several series of expository lectures which were intended to introduce key topics in noncommutative geometry to mathematicians unfamiliar with the subject. Those expository lectures have been edited and are reproduced in this volume. The lectures of Rosenberg and Weinberger discuss various applications of noncommutative geometry to problems in ``ordinary'' geometry and topology.
