Book Synopsis Avant-Garde Cultural Practices in Spain (1914-1936) by :
Download or read book Avant-Garde Cultural Practices in Spain (1914-1936) written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a critical reinterpretation of the Spanish avant-garde, focusing on narrative, transculturality, and intermediality. Narrative, because it prioritizes the analysis of prose over poetry, against the traditional use of critical literature on the subject up to this point. Transculturality, because the Spanish avant-garde simply cannot be understood without the acknowledgement of its multi-linguistic reality and the transnational scope of the experience of Modernism in Europe – of which Spain was an integral yet underexposed component. And intermediality, because the interrelations of painting, photography, film, and literature articulate a correlation and mutual affect among different media, creating a rich cultural tapestry that needs to be addressed. Contributors: Rosa Berland, Jennifer Duprey, Marcos Eymar, Regina Galasso, Eduardo Gregori, Juan Herrero-Senés, John McCulloch, Andrés Pérez-Simón, Lynn Purkey, Domingo Ródenas de Moya, Evelyn Scaramella and Antonio Sáez Delgado.
Book Synopsis The Dilemma of Modernity by : John A. McCulloch
Download or read book The Dilemma of Modernity written by John A. McCulloch and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dilemma of Modernity is a study of the evolution of Ramón Gómez de la Serna's narrative fiction within the context of European Modernism. At a time when Joyce, Kafka, Proust, and Woolfe were experimenting with prose fiction, very little is known about Spain's contribution to the novel. Despite his years in Paris, when it was still considered the cultural capital of Europe, and his championing of the avant-garde in Spain in the 1920s through his literary salon Pombo, which attracted figures such as Borges, Picasso, Huidobro, Buñuel and Lorca, Ramón Gómez de la Serna's work has suffered from critical neglect. The Dilemma of Modernity sets Gómez de la Serna's work within the cultural and historical context of the time and traces his evolution from aesthete to promoter of the avant-garde, modernist, and existentialist.
Book Synopsis Juana of Castile by : María A. Gómez
Download or read book Juana of Castile written by María A. Gómez and published by Associated University Presse. This book was released on 2008 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on pictorial, literary, screen, and operatic representations of Juana of Castile, this is the first interdisciplinary book that incorporates both sides of the coin (history and myth; fact and fiction) that shaped the enigmatic image of this much maligned Spanish queen. Even though the fictional reinvention of Juana of Castile has been the subject of sporadic articles, this is the first time that an English-language reader has access to a book that takes an in-depth look at the panorama of literary, pictorial, musical, and cinematic recreations of this historical character. The editors' aim is to incorporate works of authors from different countries (Spain, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, France) and an entire spectrum of literary genres (narrative, poetry, theater, essay), as well as opera and the visual arts. --From publisher's description.
Download or read book Women and the Law written by Anja Louis and published by Tamesis Books. This book was released on 2005 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the remarkable similarities between Burgos's critical analysis and recent feminist legal theory, her writings are still disturbingly relevant today. This study also explores the relationship between melodrama as a genre of manichean worldviews and law as a system of binary oppositions and discusses Burgos's subversion of the former as a means to criticise the latter."--Jacket.

Book Synopsis Multiple Modernities by : Michelle Sharp
Download or read book Multiple Modernities written by Michelle Sharp and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-14 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays confirms Carmen de Burgos’s pivotal place in Spanish feminist history by bringing together eminent international scholars who offer new readings of Burgos’s work. It includes the analyses of a number of lesser-known texts, both fictional and non-fictional, which give us a more comprehensive examination of Burgos’s multipronge feminist approach. Burgos’s works, especially her essays, are essential feminist reading and complement other European and North American traditions. Gaining familiarity with the breadth and depth of her work serves not only to provide an understanding of Spanish firstwave feminism, but also enriches our appreciation of cultural studies, gender studies, subaltern studies and travel literature. Looking at the entirety of her life and work, and the wide-ranging contributions in this volume, it is evident that Burgos embodied the tensions between tradition and modernity, depicting multiple representations of womanhood. Encouraging women to take ownership of their personal fashion, the design of their homes and the decorum of their families were steps towards recognizing a female population that was cognizant of its own desires.
