Book excerpt: One-pot post-polymerization modification reactions such as azo-coupling and tricyanovinylation reactions were employed to synthesize a series of polymers containing different nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophoric as well as ionic functionalities. We have extended and established the versatility of our earlier reported post-modification strategy to incorporate various heteroaromatic chromophores as well as ionic functionalities in the polymers, at the final stage of synthesis. The correlation between different heteroaromatic chromophore structures and the NLO properties of the polymers was extensively studied, Polymers containing heteroaromatic chromophores exhibit improved temporal stability and enhanced NLO activity. Polymers with ionic chromophores were employed to fabricate NLO active ultra-thin films using electrostatic self-assembling (ESA) technique. Attempts were also made to synthesize second order NLO active polydiacetylene derivatives using post azo-coupling reaction.

Because of the structural flexibility both at the molecular and bulk levels, organic materials are emerging as a very important class of nonlinear optical materials to be used for generating necessary nonlinear optical functions for the technology of photonics. Since the last NATO advanced research workshop on "Polymers for Nonlinear Optics"held in June 1988, at Nice - Sophia Antipolis, France. there has been a tremendous growth of interest worldwide and important development in this field. Significant progress has been made in theoretical modeling, material development, experimental studies and device concepts utilizing organic materials. These important recent developments provided the rationale for organizing the workshop on "Organic Materials for Nonlinear Optics and Photonics" which was held in La Rochelle, France, in August 1990. This proceeding is the outcome of the workshop held in La Rochelle. The objective of the workshop was to bring together scientists and engineers of varied backgrounds working in this field in order to assess the current status of this field by presenting significant recent developments and make recommendations on future directions of research. The workshop was multidisciplinary as it had contributions from chemists, physicists, materials scientists and device engineers. The participants were both from industries and universities. The workshop included plenary lectures by leading international scientists in this field, contributed research papers and a poster session. Panel discussion groups were organized to summarize important developments and to project future directions.

This book was released on 1994 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are examining a variety of novel high temperature stable polymers as new materials for second order nonlinear optical (NLO) and photorefractive devices. Current polymers have sufficient optical signal generated by available chromophores, but are not practical for device applications because of limitations in the temporal stability of the dopant orientation in the polymer caused by poor thermal stability of the host. This is a novel approach for developing a new class of photonic materials with superior thermal and temporal stability and is the first attempt to design a second order NLO polymer with controllable, tailorable local physical and electrical properties. A second, equally important goal is to understand the basic polymer physics controlling the thermal and temporal stability of the optical chromophore orientation. This will determine not only the overall efficiency of the materials for device applications, but will generate substantial information about mobility in high temperature stable polymer systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is much current interest in polymer materials for nonlinear optical (NLO) applications. These materials are commonly prepared by either dissolving (doping) a suitable NLO chromophore into a glassy or liquid crystalline polymer, or by covalently attaching the chromophore to the polymer host either by direct synthesis or radiative crosslinking. Regardless of the method of preparation, macroscopic orientation of the chromophore must be induced and maintained for efficient second-harmonic generation (SHG) in frequency doubling applications. For the most common use of a glassy polymer host, chromophore orientation is achieved by the process of poling. Briefly, the material is heated above Tg, a strong electric field is applied to orient the chromophores, and the material is cooled below Tg to lock in the orientation before the field is removed. A major problem in polymeric NLO materials is loss of SHG properties over time. For example, in a study of 4-(dimethylamino)-4'-nitrostilbene in PMMA, Hampsch and coworkers reported that up to 80% of the SHG efficiency was lost after 12 h at 298 K.

Book excerpt: Recent progress in organic and LED structures, in photorefractive response in molecular ferromagnetism, as well as the ultrafast and large non-linear optical response in conjugated systems are attracting great interest from the scientific community. The discovery of fullerenes has added further impetus to this field. Two areas bear particular promise for the development of a new electronics based on SEM materials: the integration of organic materials into the planar silicon technology such as, for instance, the advances in "all organic" field-effect transistors (FET) and the new organic light emitting diodes (LED); and secondly the appearance of a totally new electronics in which photons, rather than electrons, carry the information and SEM materials act as switching devices. Both aspects and more are covered in this volume. The quality of the 52 contributions attests to the fact that this subject area has progressed from the level of a scientific curiosity to a mature field of materials science introducing important technological perspectives for electronic applications.

Book excerpt: We have developed a thermal protocol for the evaluation of NLO chromophores for very high temperature electro-optical applications with poled polymers. This protocol has been demonstrated to have significant predictive utility for EO applications. We have demonstrated that while chromophore thermal instability and nonlinearity are linked, this relationship is not inviolable. Certain thermally stable NLO chromophores have been incorporated into polyimide derivatives either by flexible tether connections or by direct embedding of the donor portion into the polymer main chain. In each case, orientational stabilities for over 1000 hours at 100 C were achieved, so long as the Tg of the polymer exceeded 200 C. The embedding of the chromophore into the main chain gave polymers with exceptional thermal and oxidative stability and polymer Tg values which ranged from 250 - 350 C. Orientational stability of the embedded donor, poled polymers was outstanding and exceeded any reported in the literature, including those examples which had been stabilized by extensive crosslinking. Preliminary results on the low temperature poling of high Tg azo containing polymers by irradiation with polarized light in the presence of an electric field were encouraging as an alternative to thermal poling.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several new functionalized chromophores have been prepared and tested in the preparation of optically stable, photopatternable, NLO polymers for second harmonic generation at the diode laser wavelength of 820 nm. In particular, chromophores containing the sulfonamide or sulfonate ester functionalities have been found to be extremely versatile as they allow attachment of a polymerizable group at the electron-poor end of NLO chromophores. The results of model studies confirm that the sulfonamide groups do not have a deleterious effect on NLO properties. Several new monomers containing 4-alkoxy-4'- sulfonamido-stilbene moieties have been prepared. The 4- alkoxy end of the chromophore 'is designed to allow its incorporation into a linear polymer backbone. The sulfonamido end of the chromophore has a polymerizable double bond that can be photocrosslinked after poling of the chromophores. As it is extremely important to carry out the photopatterning step without affecting the NLO chromophore or introducing any color into the imaged polymer, novel photoinitiators were tested and found to be suitable. The radiation induced photo-patterning step can be done without causing isomerization of the stilbene chromophores, or introducing any color into the patterned coating.

Book excerpt: Poled polymers doped with nonlinear optically active chromophores combine the large second order nonlinearity of the dopant dye molecules with the optical quality of the polymer. The material design flexibility afforded to doped polymers makes them attractive in a large variety of devices and applications. This book addresses the critical science and technology issues in the development and application of poled polymers, with an emphasis on the stabilization of poled polymers and their special applications to second harmonic generation (SHG) and electro-optic (EO) devices.
