Book excerpt: Wave energy conversion devices are a rapidly growing interest worldwide for the potential to harness a sustainable and renewable energy source. Due to the oscillatory nature of ocean waves, the power generated from a permanent magnet linear generator (PMLG) for ocean wave energy conversion is pulsed. Focusing on direct drive technology, the PMLG directly translates the motion of the waves into electrical energy. The power generated, left unconditioned, is not easily used or stored. With conventional diode rectification topologies, line currents can not be controlled easily, resulting in an uncontrolled generator output and force. With an active rectifier topology, the real and reactive power from the PMLG is fully controllable. This thesis will investigate the generator modeling and design of a novel three-phase active rectifier topology and force controller with a dc-dc converter for bus voltage regulation. An in depth analysis for the controller design and simulations are presented. Hardware for the three-phase active rectifier is specified and built with initial lab test results. The controller design is implemented with National Instruments0́9 LabView and compiled on a CompactRIO real-time controller.

Research and industry have begun considering wave energy as the next new alternative energy. The unique challenges of ocean energy requires a wave energy converter to be both robust and efficient. When looking further into energy extraction via the point absorber technology, a direct drive linear generator efficiently converts the vertical wave motion into electrical energy. With considerations of long term reliability in an ocean environment as well as design to product cost, a longitudinal flux variable reluctance permanent magnet generator is a promising generator topology. This thesis identifies the reasons behind the selection of this particular generator topology for a point absorber. It provides a description of the generator topology and operation before continuing with the details as to the development of a variable reluctance permanent magnet generator with specifically known design constraints. The thesis further describes the implementation, testing, and results of such a device, while touching on considerations to take into account throughout the design process.

Book excerpt: EVALUATION OF OCEAN-ENERGY CONVERSION BASED ON LINEAR GENERATOR CONCEPTS As the world continues to demand greater productivity and lifestyle enrichment through technological advancements, the demand for electrical power is predicted to escalate dramatically. Thus far, this increased demand has been primarily supplied from fossil fueled plants. Unfortunately, the burning of fossil fuels produce harmful carbon dioxide pollution as a by-product. It has been hypothesized that unless a clean, renewable, and efficient alternate source of energy is found soon, the world may either exhaust its supplies of energy-producing materials or drastically degrade its environment. However, motions that occur naturally, such as ocean waves, can play a significant role in generating environmentally safe and economically viable energy for human utilization. The focus of this work predicts the electrical power generation capabilities from a seabed mounted linear generator tethered to a floating buoy heaving under the influence of passing ocean surface waves. Mathematical models are introduced which simulate the oceans' surface conditions under both the regular (basic) and irregular (natural) wave regimes, the heave (vertical displacement) response for a floating buoy, and the resulting electrical output parameters of the linear generator. Within these models, various physical and electrical parameters are altered in an attempt to generate a greater output power for a given sea state condition, making the Wave Energy Converter (WEC) more efficient. It is shown theoretically that the buoy can be designed to have a greater heave response than that of the height of a passing wave resulting in an increase in generated power from the linear generator. Book excerpt: To meet the increasing demand of electrical power, the use of renewable energy-based smart grid is attracting significant attention in recent years throughout the world. The high penetration of renewable power in the smart grids is growing its importance due to its non-finishing, reusable, reliable, sustainable, lower cost, and available characteristics. The renewable energy-based smart grid technology may mitigate the increasing energy demands effectively and efficiently without hampering the environment. But the uncertain nature of renewable sources largely affects the operation of the smart grid by un-stabling the voltage and frequency that may introduces power quality and reliability problems, which requires special control techniques. This book investigates the challenges in controlling renewable energy-based smart grids and proposes different control techniques to control the voltage and frequency effectively to improve the power quality and reliability of the power grids. This book is a valuable resource for readers interested in practical solutions in smart grids and renewable energy systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The direct drive point absorber is a robust and efficient system for wave energy harvesting, where the linear generator represents the most complex part of the system. Therefore, its design and optimization are crucial tasks. The tubular shape of a linear generator's magnetic circuit offers better permanent magnet flux encapsulation and reduction in radial forces on the translator due to its symmetry. A double stator topology can improve the power density of the linear tubular machine. Common designs employ a set of aligned stators on each side of a translator with radially magnetized permanent magnets. Such designs require doubling the amount of permanent magnet material and lead to an increase in the cogging force. The design presented in this thesis utilizes a translator with buried axially magnetized magnets and axially shifted positioning of the two stators such that no additional magnetic material, compared to single side machine, is required. In addition to the conservation of magnetic material, a significant improvement in the cogging force occurs in the two phase topology, while the double sided three phase system produces more power at the cost of a small increase in the cogging force. The analytical and the FEM models of the generator are described and their results compared to the experimental results. In general, the experimental results compare favourably with theoretical predictions. However, the experimentally observed permanent magnet flux leakage in the double sided machine is larger than predicted theoretically, which can be justified by the limitations in the prototype fabrication and resulting deviations from the theoretical analysis.

Book excerpt: The work presented in this thesis concerns the study of sizing, optimization and control of double stator permanent magnet generator (DSCRPMG) system for tidal current energy application. Turbine concepts, relative projects and usual chain of tidal energy conversion are first presented. A direct drive system with fixed pitch turbine is used. The analytical model of the DSCRPMG is developed and different control strategies are tested (unity power factor control, constant flux and maximum torque per ampere control). An original approach minimizing both losses of the machine and the converter is proposed, leading to improve the system efficiency over the whole speed range (MPPT and flux weakening regions) taking into account voltage and thermal constraints. A multi-objective optimization of investment and energy extracted by the entire conversion chain is performed for an operating period of 20 years, taking into account the occurrence of the sea current speed probabilities. As a result, the double stator machine gives a clear improvement in torque density despite a slight degradation of the mass torque compared to the conventional single stator synchronous machine. Finally emphasis is placed on the control of the conversion chain under normal mode or fault conditions, particularly for open circuit fault of the outer stator. Different strategies are designed to ensure continuity of service and minimize torque ripples, showing the possibilities offered by the DSCRPMG.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses, for the first time, wireless power transfer in the ocean environment. Topics covered include power electronic techniques, advanced control strategies, as well as classic and emerging applications such as smart ocean energy systems and wireless power transfer and charging of underwater autonomous vehicles. Emerging research topics are presented, along with methodologies, approaches, and industrial development of intelligent and energy-efficient techniques. Apart from the basic principles with an emphasis on inductive power transfer and mathematical analysis, the book discusses the emerging implementation for underwater wireless power transfer such as energy encryption, power and data transfer through common links, and secured data- and cyber-security. Specifically, the book comprehensively introduces significant discussions on UWPT coil theoretical and experimental analysis in seawater, optimal design, and intelligent controls. For example, since fast communication is not viable in an underwater environment, the proposed book discusses Maximum Power Efficiency Tracking (MPET) control, which achieves a maximum power efficiency (>85%) without communication or feedback from the transmitting side of the UWPT system. A k-nearest-neighbors-based machine learning approach is used to estimate the coupling coefficiency between the coils. This machine learning-based intelligent control method can offer important guidance for graduate students, academic researchers, and industrial engineers who want to understand the working principles and realize the developing trends in underwater wireless power transfer. Finally, the book includes details on the modeling and design of a smart ocean energy system--a new type of power harvesting system designed to convert ocean energy into electricity, which has the capability of making underwater wireless power connections with distributed marine devices.
