Book excerpt: Les lasers émettant dans le domaine spectral bleu suscitent un intérêt croissant pour de nombreuses applications dans les domaines de la biologie, de la détection optique ou de la médecine. Nous présentons d’abord un état de l’art des sources lasers bleues existantes ainsi que quelques applications possibles de ces sources. L’objectif de cette thèse est de développer de nouvelles sources laser bleues à partir de fibres optiques dopées. Nous avons choisi de réaliser un système laser basé sur une fibre dopée Néodyme, émettant à 927 nm, dans une architecture de type MOPA. Le signal IR émis est doublé en fréquence dans un cristal de Niobate de Lithium pour obtenir une émission laser à 463 nm. Les fibres optiques à double gaine dopées Néodyme, spécialement conçues pour émettre à 930 nm, présentent un profil d’indice de réfraction en W agissant comme un filtre passe bas en longueur d’onde afin d’atténuer la transition à 1060 nm de l’ion Néodyme. Les propriétés de propagation sont étudiées ainsi que les propriétés spectroscopiques et les mécanismes de perte de l’ion Néodyme dans les verres en silice. Deux sources lasers émettant à 927 nm sont mises en œuvre à partir des fibres dopées Néodyme (MOPA à un ou deux étages d’amplification) et sont caractérisées. Elles sont ensuite doublées en fréquence pour obtenir une émission laser bleue. Plusieurs régimes de fonctionnement sont envisagés. Une source en régime d’impulsions picosecondes est testée pour des applications en microscopie confocale. Une autre source bleue émettant à 490 nm est obtenue par doublage de fréquence du signal émis par un système MOPA à fibre dopée Ytterbium pompée à 930 nm par un laser à fibre dopée Néodyme.

After a brief reminder to laser physics, a first chapter exposes what makes organic solid-state organic lasers specific. The laser architectures used in organic lasers are then reviewed, with a state-of-the-art review of the performances of devices with regard to output power, threshold, lifetime, beam quality etc. A survey of the recent trends in the field is given, highlighting the latest developments with a special focus on the challenges remaining for achieving direct electrical pumping of organic semiconductor lasers. A last chapter covers the applications of organic solid-state lasers.

Lors de cette thèse, nous avons démontré qu’avec de nouveaux concepts, il est possible de réaliser des sources bleues originales à base de cristaux dopés néodyme. Nous avons dans un premier temps proposé une alternative au laser à Argon en concevant une source basée sur la somme de fréquence de deux raies du néodyme émettant autour de 1060 nm et 910 nm. Afin de choisir le cristal optimal, nous avons mené une étude comparative sur certaines caractéristiques physiques et les performances laser sur la transition 4F3/2-4I9/2 des cristaux de Nd:GdVO4 et Nd:YVO4. Nous avons ensuite conçu et réalisé quatre architectures laser émettant en continu à 491 nm, toutes à base de somme de fréquence intracavité. Les deux premières étaient basées sur des lasers bi-longueur d’onde à un seul ou deux cristaux laser. La troisième était composée de deux lasers dont les cavités étaient imbriquées, le cristal non linéaire étant inséré dans la partie commune. Finalement, nous avons réalisé un laser émettant à 1064 nm pompé intracavité à 912 nm. Sur le même principe, nous avons conçu une source en régime déclenché à 491 nm grâce à un nouveau concept d’extraction de puissance par interaction non linéaire. La somme de fréquence a alors lieu intracavité à 912 nm mais extracavité à 1063 nm. Finalement, nous avons étudié et réalisé un laser fonctionnant sur la transition à trois niveaux de l’ion néodyme.
