This book was released on 1998 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LE PROBLEME DE LA PROPAGATION D'ONDES SUR UNE PLAQUE PLANE ELASTIQUE EN CONTACT AVEC DEUX LIQUIDES DIFFERENTS EST TRAITE. UNE ETUDE NUMERIQUE DETAILLEE MONTRE LES PROPRIETES DE L'ONDE A ET L'EXISTENCE D'UNE NOUVELLE ONDE (ONDE A*) QUAND DEUX FLUIDES DIFFERENTS SONT EN CONTACT AVEC LA LAME. UNE ETUDE EXPERIMENTALE DES ONDES A ET A* EST ENSUITE MENEE EN UTILISANT DES TECHNIQUES EXPERIMENTALES PARTICULIERES A LA CARACTERISATION DE L'ONDE A : GENERATION D'UNE ONDE NON ATTENUEE PAR UNE IMPULSION ET CARACTERISATION PAR ANALYSE TEMPS-FREQUENCE. LA PROPAGATION D'UNE ONDE DANS UN MILIEU MONODIMENSIONNEL INFINI EST ENSUITE ETUDIEE EN UTILISANT LES ESPACES DE FOURIER BIDIMENSIONNELS. UN SOIN PARTICULIER EST ACCORDE A L'ETUDE D'UNE ONDE ATTENUEE ET DISPERSIVE GENEREE A PARTIR D'UNE IMPULSION BREVE. UN NOUVEAU LIEN EST ALORS MIS EN EVIDENCE ENTRE LE VECTEUR D'ONDE COMPLEXE ET LA PULSATION COMPLEXE. CE LIEN AUTORISE AINSI, ET POUR LA PREMIERE FOIS, UNE CARACTERISATION COMPLETE DES REPRESENTATIONS TOUT-FREQUENCE ET VECTEUR D'ONDE-TEMPS. SUR LA BASE DE CES RESULTATS, DEUX ASPECTS SONT DEVELOPPES : D'UNE PART LA MODELISATION DE LA PROPAGATION D'UNE ONDE AUTOUR D'UN TUBE IMMERGE (MILIEU MONODIMENTIONNEL LIMITE) ET D'AUTRE PART DE NOUVELLES METHODES DE TRAITEMENT DU SIGNAL. L'ASPECT RESONANT DU A LA PROPAGATION SUR UN TUBE D'UNE ONDE GENEREE PAR UNE IMPULSION EST AINSI MONTRE ET MODELISE. DE NOUVELLES METHODES DE CARACTERISATION D'ONDES DE SURFACE SONT MISES EN PLACE, PERMETTANT DE MESURER VECTEUR D'ONDE ET PULSATION COMPLEXES, SUR DES DISTANCES TRES COURTES DE L'ORDRE DE QUELQUES LONGUEURS D'ONDES. EN UTILISANT CES NOUVEAUX OUTILS, LA PROPAGATION DE L'ONDE A EST ETUDIEE EXPERIMENTALEMENT SUR UN TUBE IMMERGE DANS L'EAU. L'INFLUENCE DES PARAMETRES GEOMETRIQUES DU TUBE AINSI QUE DE SON REMPLISSAGE EST ETUDIEE. DE NOUVEAUX PHENOMENES SONT MIS EN EVIDENCE LORSQUE LE LIQUIDE INTERIEUR POSSEDE UNE VITESSE DE PROPAGATION DU SON INFERIEURE A CELLE DU LIQUIDE EXTERNE, L'ONDE A* EST OBSERVEE PERIODIQUEMENT SPATIALEMENT. ON MONTRE QUE LA REPRESENTATION TOUT-FREQUENCE CORRESPONDANT A LA SOMME DE TOUS CES ECHOS EST LE PRODUIT DE CONVOLUTION DE LA REPRESENTATION TOUT FREQUENCE DE L'ONDE A* SEULE AVEC UN RESONATEUR DE FABRY-PEROT. CE MODELE EXPERIMENTAL EST EN BON ACCORD AVEC LES RESULTATS THEORIQUES.

Book excerpt: DEPUIS JUILLET 1991, LE PREMIER SATELLITE DE TELEDETECTION EUROPEEN ERS-1 PERMET L'OBTENTION D'IMAGES DE LA SURFACE DE LA TERRE EN TEMPS REEL DANS TOUTES LES CONDITIONS METEOROLOGIQUES ET D'ECLAIREMENT. L'AVANTAGE PRINCIPAL DE CE TYPE D'IMAGEUR EST L'UTILISATION DE SYSTEMES A SYNTHESE D'OUVERTURE QUI FAIT DE CES RADARS DES INSTRUMENTS TRES BIEN ADAPTES A L'ETUDE DES PHENOMENES OCEANOGRAPHIQUES. A L'INSTAR DU PHENOMENE DE LA HOULE, LES CARACTERISTIQUES DES ONDES INTERNES PEUVENT ETRE TRES BIEN IMAGEES PAR CES RADARS A OUVERTURE SYNTHETIQUE (ROS). PAR CONSEQUENT, LA MANIFESTATION DES SIGNATURES D'ONDES INTERNES DANS LES IMAGES ROS OCEANOGRAPHIQUES A DONC VIVEMENT ATTIRE L'INTERET DES OCEANOGRAPHES. LES ONDES INTERNES SONT DES TRAINS D'ONDES SOLITAIRES QUI SONT GENERES PRINCIPALEMENT PAR L'INTERACTION ENTRE LES COURANTS DE MAREE ET LES VARIATIONS TOPOGRAPHIQUES BRUSQUES DU FOND MARIN. DE PLUS, ELLES TRANSPORTENT DE L'ENERGIE ET PEUVENT AVOIR UNE MASSE DE FLUX ASSOCIEE. AINSI, ELLES PEUVENT CHANGER LA DENSITE ET DE CETTE FACON AFFECTER PLUSIEURS DOMAINES DE L'ACOUSTIQUE SOUS-MARINE. LEURS SIGNATURES DE SURFACE SONT DES CARACTERISTIQUES DE BANDES ALTERNEE RUGUEUSES ET LISSES DE LA SURFACE DE LA MER QUI APPARAISENT COMME DES BANDES CLAIRES ET FONCEES EN NIVEAUX DE GRIS DANS L'IMAGE ROS. L'IDEE SUR LAQUELLE NOUS BASONS NOTRE ETUDE EST LA SUIVAINT : SI NOUS POUVONS ASSOCIER LES CARACTERISTIQUES DES NIVEAUX DE GRIS AUX MODELES PHYSIQUES DES ONDES INTERNES, ALORS NOUS POURRONS EN SAVOIR PLUS SUR LES MECANISMES DE GENERATION ET D'IDENTIFICATION DES PHENOMENES D'ONDES INTERNES A PARTIR DES DONNEES SATELLITES. AINSI, L'OBJECTIF DE CE TRAVAIL SE PLACE DANS LE CADRE DE DEVELOPPEMENT ET DE LA VERIFICATION D'OUTILS DU TRAITEMENT DU SIGNAL ET DE L'IMAGE POUR DETECTER, LOCALISER ET CARACTERISER LES SIGNATURES D'ONDES INTERNES PERCEPTIBLES A LA SURFACE DE L'OCEAN. IL A ETE DEMONTRE QUE LES ONDES INTERNES SONT DES SIGNATURES BIEN LOCALISEES DANS LE DOMAINE SPATIAL. EN RAISON DE LEUR LOCALISATION FINIE DANS L'IMAGE ROS ET DE LEUR EXTENSION DANS LES DOMAINES FREQUENTIEL ET TEMPOREL, LES ONDES INTERNES SONT DES PHENOMENES MESO-ECHELLE BIEN ADAPTES POUR ETRE ANALYSES PAR DES METHODES TEMPS-FREQUENCE/ECHELLE COMME PAR EXEMPLE L'ANALYSE EN ONDELETTES. DANS NOTRE ETUDE, CES METHODES D'ANALYSE EN ONDELETTES SONT UTILISEES ET ADAPTEES AFIN D'EXTRAIRE LES CARACTERISTIQUES ET LES PARAMETRES DES PAQUETS D'ONDES INTERNES. EN CONCLUSION, LES RESULTATS DE CETTE ETUDE SUR PLUSIEURS IMAGES ERS-1/2 ET RADARSAT MONTRENT QUE L'ANALYSE EN ONDELETTES EST UN OUTIL PERFORMANT POUR LA DETECTION ET LA CARACTERISATION DES SIGNATURES D'ONDES INTERNES PAR RAPPORT A DE FAUSSES ALARMES APPARAISSANT DANS LES IMAGES ROS DE LA SURFACE DE L'OCEAN

Book excerpt: This new, third volume of Cohen-Tannoudji's groundbreaking textbook covers advanced topics of quantum mechanics such as uncorrelated and correlated identical particles, the quantum theory of the electromagnetic field, absorption, emission and scattering of photons by atoms, and quantum entanglement. Written in a didactically unrivalled manner, the textbook explains the fundamental concepts in seven chapters which are elaborated in accompanying complements that provide more detailed discussions, examples and applications. * Completing the success story: the third and final volume of the quantum mechanics textbook written by 1997 Nobel laureate Claude Cohen-Tannoudji and his colleagues Bernard Diu and Franck Laloë * As easily comprehensible as possible: all steps of the physical background and its mathematical representation are spelled out explicitly * Comprehensive: in addition to the fundamentals themselves, the books comes with a wealth of elaborately explained examples and applications Claude Cohen-Tannoudji was a researcher at the Kastler-Brossel laboratory of the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris where he also studied and received his PhD in 1962. In 1973 he became Professor of atomic and molecular physics at the Collège des France. His main research interests were optical pumping, quantum optics and atom-photon interactions. In 1997, Claude Cohen-Tannoudji, together with Steven Chu and William D. Phillips, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his research on laser cooling and trapping of neutral atoms. Bernard Diu was Professor at the Denis Diderot University (Paris VII). He was engaged in research at the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics and High Energy where his focus was on strong interactions physics and statistical mechanics. Franck Laloë was a researcher at the Kastler-Brossel laboratory of the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris. His first assignment was with the University of Paris VI before he was appointed to the CNRS, the French National Research Center. His research was focused on optical pumping, statistical mechanics of quantum gases, musical acoustics and the foundations of quantum mechanics.

Book excerpt: Fall in love with the addictive, suspenseful love story between a teenage girl and a vampire with the book that sparked a "literary phenomenon" and redefined romance for a generation (New York Times). Isabella Swan's move to Forks, a small, perpetually rainy town in Washington, could have been the most boring move she ever made. But once she meets the mysterious and alluring Edward Cullen, Isabella's life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn. Up until now, Edward has managed to keep his vampire identity a secret in the small community he lives in, but now nobody is safe, especially Isabella, the person Edward holds most dear. The lovers find themselves balanced precariously on the point of a knife -- between desire and danger. Deeply romantic and extraordinarily suspenseful, Twilight captures the struggle between defying our instincts and satisfying our desires. This is a love story with bite. It's here! #1 bestselling author Stephenie Meyer makes a triumphant return to the world of Twilight with the highly anticipated companion, Midnight Sun: the iconic love story of Bella and Edward told from the vampire's point of view. "People do not want to just read Meyer's books; they want to climb inside them and live there." -- Time "A literary phenomenon." -- The New York Times

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is estimated that literally billions of residents in urban and peri-urban areas of Africa, Asia, and Latin America are served by onsite sanitation systems (e.g. various types of latrines and septic tanks). Until recently, the management of faecal sludge from these onsite systems has been grossly neglected, partially as a result of them being considered temporary solutions until sewer-based systems could be implemented. However, the perception of onsite or decentralized sanitation technologies for urban areas is gradually changing, and is increasingly being considered as long-term, sustainable options in urban areas, especially in low- and middle-income countries that lack sewer infrastructures. This is the first book dedicated to faecal sludge management. It compiles the current state of knowledge of the rapidly evolving field of faecal sludge management, and presents an integrated approach that includes technology, management, and planning based on Sandecs 20 years of experience in the field. Faecal Sludge Management: Systems Approach for Implementation and Operation addresses the organization of the entire faecal sludge management service chain, from the collection and transport of sludge, and the current state of knowledge of treatment options, to the final end use or disposal of treated sludge. The book also presents important factors to consider when evaluating and upscaling new treatment technology options. The book is designed for undergraduate and graduate students, and engineers and practitioners in the field who have some basic knowledge of environmental and/or wastewater engineering.

Book excerpt: This book gives a comprehensive view of the most recent major international research in the field of tolerancing, and is an excellent resource for anyone interested in Computer Aided Tolerating. It is organized into 4 parts. Part 1 focuses on the more general problems of tolerance analysis and synthesis, for tolerancing in mechanical design and manufacturing processes. Part 2 specifically highlights the simulation of assembly with defects, and the influence of tolerances on the quality of the assembly. Part 3 deals with measurement aspects, and quality control throughout the life cycle. Different measurement technologies and methods for estimating uncertainty are considered. In Part 4, different aspects of tolerancing and their interactions are explored, from the definition of functional requirement to measurement processes in a PLM approach.

Appeared in the mid 60’s as solid-state alternatives for liquid dye lasers, they recently gained a new dimension after the demonstration of organic semiconductor lasers in the 90's. More recently, new perspectives appeared at the nanoscale, with organic polariton and surface plasmon lasers. After a brief reminder to laser physics, a first chapter exposes what makes organic solid-state organic lasers specific. The laser architectures used in organic lasers are then reviewed, with a state-of-the-art review of the performances of devices with regard to output power, threshold, lifetime, beam quality etc. A survey of the recent trends in the field is given, highlighting the latest developments with a special focus on the challenges remaining for achieving direct electrical pumping of organic semiconductor lasers. A last chapter covers the applications of organic solid-state lasers.
