Book excerpt: Ce mémoire porte sur la synthèse et la caractérisation de nouveaux matériaux organiques pour l’optique non linéaire quadratique. Dans une première partie, nous avons synthétisé des chromophores organiques ou organométalliques, certains à cœur thiophène, les autres étant constitués d’un pont transmetteur à coeur 3,3’-bipyridine. Une stratégie de synthèse combinatoire développée au Laboratoire, reposant sur le couplage de Suzuki de briques élémentaires du type stilbène, a permis de multiplier les possibilités de structures accessibles et dintroduire des groupements accepteurs et donneurs efficaces. Les valeurs de (0) des chromophores ont été mesurées par EFISHG et sont comprises entre 3700.10-48 et 7460.10-48 esu dans le cas des dérivés à pont thiophène et entre 120.10-48 et 4420.10-48 esu dans le cas des composés à coeur 3,3’-bipyridine. Dans une deuxième partie, nous avons développé une stratégie de synthèse originale de polymères à architecture contrôlée afin de réduire les phénomènes d’agrégation présents dans des structures classiques de copolymères. La méthode utilisée repose sur la polymérisation radicalaire contrôlée par transfert réversible par addition-fragmentation (RAFT). Nous avons dans un premier temps mis au point la polymérisation du styrène et du méthacrylate de méthyle avec un composé modèle mimant le chromophore puis, dans un deuxième temps, nous avons appliqué cette stratégie avec le Disperse Red 19 (DR19) comme chromophore. Dans le cas de la matrice PMMA, nous n’avons pas réussi à transposer l’étude modèle au DR 19. Dans le cas de la matrice PS, nous avons obtenu des polymères incorporant le DR19 à des concentrations comprises entre 2% et 14%. Ces derniers ont été caractérisés par SHG sous la forme de films minces d’environ 0,5 m d’épaisseur. Les valeurs de dpp mesurées varient entre 20 et 75 pm/V.

Book excerpt: The book intends to give a state-of-the-art overview of flexoelectricity, a linear physical coupling between mechanical (orientational) deformations and electric polarization, which is specific to systems with orientational order, such as liquid crystals. Chapters written by experts in the field shed light on theoretical as well as experimental aspects of research carried out since the discovery of flexoelectricity. Besides a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity is also addressed. Electro-optic effects due to or modified by flexoelectricity as well as various (direct and indirect) measurement methods are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the role of flexoelectricity in pattern-forming instabilities. While the main focus of the book lies in flexoelectricity in nematic liquid crystals, peculiarities of other mesophases (bent-core systems, cholesterics, and smectics) are also reviewed. Flexoelectricity has relevance to biological (living) systems and can also offer possibilities for technical applications. The basics of these two interdisciplinary fields are also summarized.
