Book excerpt: Vocabulary has been one of the growth areas of language study over the past three decades. In the second edition of this definitive study, Ronald Carter updates progress in key areas of language description and applied linguistics. This new edition includes new material on the relationship between vocabulary, grammar and discourse and the implications of new insights into vocabulary for the study of speech and writing in English. It also has updated chapters on vocabulary and language teaching, dictionaries and lexicography, and the literary study of vocabulary. Vocabulary: Applied Linguistic Perspectiveshas been widely praised since first publication for the breadth, depth and clarity of its approach. This new edition builds upon these foundations and develops further understanding of this key area of applied linguistics.

Book Synopsis Language, Discourse and Literature by : Ronald Carter
Download or read book Language, Discourse and Literature written by Ronald Carter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection shows students of English and applied linguistics ways in which language and literary study can be integrated. By drawing on a wide range of texts by mainly British and American writers, from a variety of different periods, the contributors show how discourse stylistics can provide models for the systematic description of, for example, dialogue in fiction; language of drama and balladic poetry; speech presentation; the interactive properties of metre; the communicative context of author/reader. Among the texts examined are novels, poetry and drama by major twentieth-century writers such as Joyce, Auden, Pinter and Hopkins, as well as examples from Shakespeare, Donne and Milton. Each chapter has a wide range of exercises for practical analysis, an extensive glossary and a comprehensive bibliography with suggestions for further reading. The book will be particularly useful to undergraduate students of English and applied linguistics and advanced students of modern languages or English as a foreign language.

Book Synopsis Discourse Markers by : Graham Ranger
Download or read book Discourse Markers written by Graham Ranger and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In our everyday speech we represent events and situations, but we also provide commentary on these representations, situating ourselves and others relative to what we have to say and situating what we say in larger contexts. The present volume examines this activity of discourse marking from an enunciative perspective, providing the first English-language study of the highly influential Theory of Enunciative and Predicative Operations. This semantic/pragmatic theory is popular among academics who specialize in linguistics, discourse analysis, translation studies and didactics in France, but has not yet been widely adopted elsewhere. The tools of this theory are applied to a variety of specific discourse markers in contemporary English and semantic hypotheses are tested using the data-based approach of corpus linguistics. This book therefore provides an English-speaking readership with the keys to understand the theory underlying the author’s analysis of a selection of markers (‘anyway’, ‘indeed’, ‘in fact’, ‘yet’, ‘still’, ‘like’ and 'I think'). This book will provide a valuable resource for students and researchers in linguistics with an interest in discourse markers, natural language argumentation, formal semantics, the interfaces between syntax, semantics and pragmatics, linguistic theorisation and French – or “poststructural” – models of discourse analysis.

Book Synopsis Youngspeak in a Multilingual Perspective by : Anna-Brita Stenström
Download or read book Youngspeak in a Multilingual Perspective written by Anna-Brita Stenström and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2009-05-05 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite its potential influence on the standard language, there is still relatively little written about the language of the young. This book gives new insight into some important areas of their language, such as identity construction reflected, for instance, in prosodic patterns and language choice, the use of discourse markers and slang in a contrastive perspective, the pragmatics of fixed expressions and the impact of English on the teenage vernacular. Most of the articles are corpus-based, and all represent naturally occurring spontaneous conversation. The book will be of interest to linguists, university students and anyone interested in today’s adolescent language and language change.

Book Synopsis The Syntax and Semantics of Discourse Markers by : Miriam Urgelles-Coll
Download or read book The Syntax and Semantics of Discourse Markers written by Miriam Urgelles-Coll and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2010-05-20 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the syntax and semantics of discourse markers, this book employs a syntactic approach to describe discourse markers in Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG), relevant in a theory of discourse because it provides a framework in which all levels of grammar can be integrated. Since discourse markers operate at discourse level, a well developed discourse theory is required - in this case, Segmented Discourse Representation Theory (SDRT) is adopted. During the course of the book, Minimal Recourse Semantics is explained as it provides an integration of HPSG and SDRT. The approach described is exemplified with an analysis of 'anyway'. This book provides a detailed overview of research on discourse markers covering different areas of linguistics: from a discourse analysis point of view, to a Relevance Theory perspective going through a computational linguistics approach. Containing a precise summary of HPSG and the recently developed SDRT, it will be of great interest to researchers in semantics, pragmatics, grammar and discourse analysis.
Book Synopsis Figuring out Figuration by : María Sandra Peña-Cervel
Download or read book Figuring out Figuration written by María Sandra Peña-Cervel and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2022-05-15 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book combines explanatory breadth with analytical delicacy. It offers a comprehensive study of a broad array of traditional figures of speech by systematizing linguistic evidence of the cognitive processes underlying them. Such processes are explicitly linked to different communicative consequences, thus bringing together pragmatics and cognition. This type of study has allowed the authors to provide new definitions for all the figures while making their dependency relations fully explicit. For example, hypallage, antonomasia, anthimeria, and merism are studied as variants of metonymy, and analogy, paragon, and allegory as variants of metaphor. An important feature of the book is its special emphasis on the combinations of figures of speech into conceptually more complex configurations. Finally, the book accounts for the principles that regulate the felicity of figurative expressions. The result is a broad integrative framework for the analysis of figurative language grounded in the relationship between pragmatics and cognition.

The Routledge Pragmatics Encyclopedia captures the diversity of these intellectual interests in a comprehensive, single-volume edition. The Routledge Pragmatics Encyclopedia covers concepts and theories that have traditionally been associated with pragmatics, but also recent areas of development within the field, scholars who have had a significant influence on pragmatics, interdisciplinary exchanges between pragmatics and other areas of enquiry and all major research trends. Extensive cross-references between entries, along with suggestions for further reading at the end of entries, ensure that the interested reader can pursue additional study of chosen topics. With over 200 entries, written by leading academics from around the world, The Routledge Pragmatics Encyclopedia captures the rich complexity of pragmatics in an accessible manner. This reference will be relevant to students of pragmatics as well as to established scholars in the field.

Book Synopsis Cognitive Grammar in Contemporary Fiction by : Chloe Harrison
Download or read book Cognitive Grammar in Contemporary Fiction written by Chloe Harrison and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2017-05-24 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes an extension of Cognitive Grammar (Langacker 1987, 1991, 2008) towards a cognitive discourse grammar, through the unique environment that literary stylistic application offers. Drawing upon contemporary research in cognitive stylistics (Text World Theory, deixis and mind-modelling, amongst others), the volume scales up central Cognitive Grammar concepts (such as construal, grounding, the reference point model and action chains) in order to explore the attenuation of experience – and how it is simulated – in literary reading. In particular, it considers a range of contemporary texts by Neil Gaiman, Jennifer Egan, Jonathan Safran Foer, Ian McEwan and Paul Auster. This application builds upon previous work that adopts Cognitive Grammar for literary analysis and provides the first extended account of Cognitive Grammar in contemporary fiction.
Book Synopsis Young Bilingual Learners in Nursery School by : Linda Thompson
Download or read book Young Bilingual Learners in Nursery School written by Linda Thompson and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2000 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the findings of an ethnolinguistic study of the language and social behaviour of a group of three-year-old British-born children from families of settled migrants who speak languages other than English in their homes and communities. The study draws from a number of research disciplines, including linguistics, anthropology and ethnography to provide an analytical description of the social and linguistic behaviour of the children during their first term in kindergarten. Although the study was located in the UK, the findings have implications for children in other societies where English is the formal language of education. The book will be of interest to teachers, parents and others interested in the lives of young children.
