Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everything changes in our universe, in our world, and in ourselves. From observations, collection of historical data, experimental data, and our vision, we have tools at our disposal to understand these changes. Algebra, calculus, differential equations, probability, and statistics all help us to model a changing dependent variable with respect to governing independent variables. M. Kemal Atesmen, a longtime mechanical engineer, examines seventeen different physical or everyday life phenomena in this book. Topics include zeroth order and first-order changes, namely changes that can be modeled using zeroth order and first-order finite difference and differential equations; problems focusing on optimization of a dependent variable with respect to an independent variable using simple algebraic equations; and changes in a process or in a measurement system in high volume production using industrial statistics. Using simple models, the author examines the behavior of twenty-four different change phenomena. Most of the mathematical models he uses are first-order difference (change) equations, and several use statistics and probability to approximate a change. This introductory mathematical model for change will be a valuable resource for anyone trying to predict, understand, and navigate change.

Book excerpt: First Published in 1991. This book attempts to defend a conception of reason—or to use the Greek word "logos"—that I contend can be extracted from the dialogues of Plato. The very notion of defending Plato may seem strange. Why would a philosopher enshrined for centuries as "classic" need a defense? A defense against whom and what charge? What does it mean to defend an author so long dead? Can he somehow be revived? In other words, what significance can a defense of Plato possibly attain for a contemporary audience?

Book excerpt: Tan Malaka, 1897- 1949, was an Indonesian Muslim, Marxist, philosopher, teacher, and founder of the Persatuan Perjuangan (Struggle Front), a coalition of groups negotiating the terms of Indonesian independence in the1940s. He was awarded the Government designation of National Hero in 1963. This book offers new findings regarding Tan Malaka's Islamic thought, and discusses how to analyse his works and legacy. These findings are novel and significant. Tan Malaka, as a left-leaning Muslim who embraced critical thinking, is still seen as a controversial figure in Indonesia and the wider world. Today, he is often discredited in history books. In fact, his Islamic ideas can provide answers to problems or themes in the discourse of Islamic studies today. The scope of this book falls within the scope of Islamic Philosophy, Islamic Political, and Social Science Studies. In other words, interdisciplinary. The specific purpose of this book is to fill in the gaps of analysis and new findings regarding Tan Malaka's Islamic thought. As well as providing new discourses in Islamic Political.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Helen Tookey presents a new study of Anais Nin (1903-77), focusing both on the cultural and historical contexts in which her work was produced and received, and on the different versions of Nin herself - as a modernist, a woman writer, a public (and controversial) figure in the women'sliberation movement, and as a set of conflicting and often extreme representations of femininity. The author shows how contextual feminist approaches shed light on Nin (who moved from Paris modernism of the 1930s to US second-wave feminism of the 1970s), and how this sheds light on key issues andconflicts within feminist thinking since the 1970s, particularly questions of identity, femininity, and psychoanalysis. Anais Nin: Fictionality and Femininity provides new readings of Nin through contemporary feminist approaches, using Nin to make an intervention into critical debates aroundmodernism, feminism, and psychoanalysis, writing and identity, fictionality and femininity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A poignant collection of short pieces about the author's hometown, St. Petersburg, Russia, and the siege of Leningrad that combines memoir, history, and fiction. Living Pictures refers to the parlor game of tableaux vivants, in which people dress up in costume to bring scenes from history back to life. It’s a game about survival, in a sense, and what it means to be a survivor is the question that Polina Barskova explores in the scintillating literary amalgam of Living Pictures. Barskova, one of the most admired and controversial figures in a new generation of Russian writers, first made her name as a poet; she is also known as a scholar of the catastrophic siege of Leningrad in World War II. In Living Pictures, Barskova writes with caustic humor and wild invention about traumas past and present, historical and autobiographical, exploring how we cope with experiences that defy comprehension. She writes about her relationships with her adoptive father and her birth father; about sex, wanted and unwanted; about the death of a lover; about Turner and Picasso; and, in the final piece, she mines the historical record in a chamber drama about two lovers sheltering in the Hermitage Museum during the siege of Leningrad who slowly, operatically, hopelessly, stage their own deaths. Living Pictures introduces a startlingly daring and original new voice from world literature.
