Book excerpt: Excerpt from Morphological and Systematic Studies on the Cheilostomatous Bryozoa The first Plates to this work were prepared in the year 1901, which will ex plain why a number of the generic names used on the Plates have later been replaced by others on the accompanying explanations. In some cases, namely, I have often been obliged to name the figures given on a Plate at a period when I was not yet certain to what genus a given species should be referred, and I have therefore been obliged provisionally to use the earlier given generic name; in other cases I have later been obliged to use another generic name, because it had been shown in the interval that an older had the priority. In many cases I have followed the view of the priority question expressed by the Rev. A. M. Norman in his notes on the Natural History of East Finmark Polyzoa. In some few cases it has also been necessary to alter the specific name. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Nexus Analysis by : Suzie Wong Scollon
Download or read book Nexus Analysis written by Suzie Wong Scollon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-07-31 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nexus Analysis presents an exciting theory by two of the leading names in discourse analysis and provides a practical guide to its application. The authors argue that discourse analysis can itself be a form of social action. If the discourse analyst is part of the nexus of practice under study, then the analysis can itself transform that nexus of practice. Focussing on their own involvement with and analysis of pioneering communication technologies in Alaska they identify moments of social importance in order to examine the links between social practice, culture and technology. Media are identified not only as means of expressing change but also as catalysts for change itself, with the power to transform the socio-cultural landscape. In this intellectually exciting yet accessible book, Ron Scollon and Suzie Wong Scollon present a working example of their theory in action and provide a personal snapshot of a key moment in the history of communication technology, as the Internet transformed Alaskan life.

Book Synopsis The Archaeology of Prehistoric Coastlines by : Geoff Bailey
Download or read book The Archaeology of Prehistoric Coastlines written by Geoff Bailey and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1988-04-07 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Archaeology of Prehistoric Coastlines offers a conspectus of recent work on coastal archaeology examining the various ways in which hunter-gatherers and farmers across the world exploited marine resources such as fish, shellfish and waterfowl in prehistory. Changes in sea levels and the balance of marine ecosystems have altered coastal environments significantly over the last ten thousand years and the contributors assess the impact of these changes on the nature of human settlement and subsistence. An overview of coastal archaeology as a developing discipline is followed by ten case studies from a wide variety of places including Scandinavia, Japan, Tasmania and New Zealand, Peru, South Africa and the United States.

Book Synopsis The Technology of Early Settlement in Northern Europe by : Kjel Knutsson
Download or read book The Technology of Early Settlement in Northern Europe written by Kjel Knutsson and published by Equinox Publishing. This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores technology and communication of the early settlements of Northern Europe. The articles will discuss case studies and present overviews from the early and middle Mesolithic of Northern Europe. Special emphasis will be put on the spatial and temporal transmission of knowledge and culture. This subject addresses themes such as the transmission of specialised knowledge, the generative transmission of knowledge, the understanding of technology as somatic or incorporated culture in human society and the role of pedagogies and teaching in cultural sustainment and transformation. Other papers will discuss the relation between demography and technological developments, as well as the natural and cultural context for the transmission of culture. The understanding of the transmission of technology is, again, closely interrelated to the nature and efficiency of social networks of contact and their social and physical framework. Ultimately these question addresses one of the fundamental issues of our time - how to understand and cope with radical changes. This book provides new and different answers to this great problem of our time.
Book Synopsis Martin Waldseemüller’s 'Carta marina' of 1516 by : Chet Van Duzer
Download or read book Martin Waldseemüller’s 'Carta marina' of 1516 written by Chet Van Duzer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-09 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book presents the first detailed study of one of the most important masterpieces of Renaissance cartography, Martin Waldseemüller’s Carta marina of 1516. By transcribing, translating into English, and detailing the sources of all of the descriptive texts on the map, as well as the sources of many of the images, the book makes the map available to scholars in a wholly unprecedented way. In addition, the book provides revealing insights into how Waldseemüller went about making the map -- information that can’t be found in any other source. The Carta marina is the result of Waldseemüller’s radical re-evaluation of what a world map should be; he essentially started from scratch when he created it, rejecting the Ptolemaic model and other sources he had used in creating his 1507 map, and added more descriptive texts and a wealth of illustrations. Given its content, the book offers an essential reference work not only on this map, but also for anyone working in sixteenth-century European cartography.
