This book was released on 2014-12-15 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Adjutant General's Office published Raphael Thian's "notes" on U.S. military geography in 1880, it produced an invaluable research tool for generations of military historians to come. In this single documented reference volume, Chief Clerk Thian traced the confusing mutations through which the divisions, departments, and districts of the Army's command had evolved since 1813. The volume is divided into three parts, beginning with the names of the United States Army Continental Commands, the date and authority for their creation, location of the headquarters, geographical changes and discontinuances, and other details including the geographical boundaries embracing each division, department, and district. Part II is filled with background information on states and territories, and Part III lists the maps contained in The Military Atlas of the United States. The Addenda to this edition expand and update Thian's work. Notes made by Francis B. Heitman to keep his personal copy current are included, as is the Memorandum published by the government in 1906. This addition lists all changes from 1898 through 1905.

Download or read book Cartography in France, 1660-1848 written by Josef Konvitz and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1987 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: French scientists, engineers, and public officials were responsible for the most important and distinctive innovations in cartography in eighteenth-century Europe. By expanding the analytical uses of maps, by establishing unprecedented standards of accuracy, and by nurturing institutional frameworks to sustain mapping projects over many years, the French contributed to one of the central concepts of modern times: that man, through direct observation and accumulated information can better understand and manage his affairs. Concentrating on how and why new concepts and techniques of making and using maps were introduced, Josef Konvitz skillfully traces the modernization of cartography during the French Enlightenment. The story he unfolds is not merely a narrative of who did what, but an analysis of how the map itself influenced attitudes toward the land and the consequent effects on planning and the development of resources. Throughout, Konvitz demonstrates the significant relationship between cartography and political, economic, and military life. He emphasizes efforts to enlarge the practical applications of maps in government and the impact of government policy on the evolution of cartography.

This book was released on 1918 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: X.H. Price Lecture Materials on Military Geography of the Western Front as of March 21, 1918, consists of a 25 page printed booklet of lecture notes, one small map, and three large maps, all originally housed in an envelope attached to a book-jacket. Each map supplements the lecture, which was given by Lieutenant Colonel X.H. (Xenophon Herbert) Price at the Staff College in Langres, France, at the end of World War I (WWI). The lecture notes reference the maps to cover different permanent and semi-permanent features of the Western Front. The notes also cover defense lines and strategical points for both Germany and Allied powers. The small map is entitled "Diagrammatic View of the western theater of war" and was from a book by Columbia University Professor Douglas Johnson. The three large maps each highlight a different element: railroads, geographical areas, and mineral areas. Of note in the mineral areas are the "Lorraine iron fields" and the "Northern coal fields."
