Book Synopsis Materials for an Anatomy of Personality in Late Imperial China by : Paolo Santangelo
Download or read book Materials for an Anatomy of Personality in Late Imperial China written by Paolo Santangelo and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-01-11 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How was the concept of 'personality' perceived in (late-imperial) China? Re-constructing the main features describing the individual, this volume, firmly based in textual sources, is a reflection on personality and its attributes in China. It discusses terms that express the propensity, inclinations, predispositions, and temperament of subjects, departing from the descriptions that represent one’s and the other’s self, as well as terms that describe or label a person's main qualities or defects. As judgments contribute to formulate the image of ourselves and others, when talking of personality not only individual characters (biological traits, cultural basis, innate and acquired traits and habits) are looked into, but also social values and collective mentality, as well as individual and group subjectivity.
Book Synopsis Young and Disaffected: Some (bittersweet) Notes for Growing Up Southern by : Valencia Richardson
Download or read book Young and Disaffected: Some (bittersweet) Notes for Growing Up Southern written by Valencia Richardson and published by . This book was released on 2019-12-02 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If not you, then who? Young and Disaffected shines a spotlight on the people working hard to make the American South a better place for the younger, more progressive generations. Author Valencia Richardson wrote this love letter to her home region; featuring stories from young adults fighting the good fight to empower Southern youths. It's a demand to take action and stand up for their rights despite obstacles created by deep-rooted conservative political roots. Interviewing young activists with their boots on the ground and recounting to historical accounts from civil rights leaders, this book's goal is to show younger generations that you don't have to sit back and wait for change. Instead, they can stand up right now and get involved in forcing a change through political activism. For example, you'll hear a story about an undocumented immigration activist risking his safety and freedom to raise awareness about the plight of people like him in the South. While Young and Disaffected doesn't presume that hope is a given, it does show that hope is always an option even when all seems lost. To all Southerners looking for this hope, look no further than the young people already doing the work.

Book Synopsis The Paradox of Tar Heel Politics by : Rob Christensen
Download or read book The Paradox of Tar Heel Politics written by Rob Christensen and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2010-10-04 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can a state be represented by Jesse Helms and John Edwards at the same time? Journalist Rob Christensen answers that question and navigates a century of political history in North Carolina, one of the most politically vibrant and competitive southern states, where neither conservatives nor liberals, Democrats nor Republicans, have been able to rest easy. It is this climate of competition and challenge, Christensen argues, that enabled North Carolina to rise from poverty in the nineteenth century to become a leader in research, education, and banking in the twentieth. In this new paperback edition, Christensen provides updated coverage of recent changes in North Carolina's political landscape, including the scandals surrounding John Edwards and Mike Easley, the defeat of U.S. senator Elizabeth Dole, the election of the state's first woman governor, and voters' approval of an African American candidate for president. The book provides an overview of the run-up to the 2010 elections and explains how North Carolina has become, arguably, the most politically competitive state in the South.

Book Synopsis The Papers of Jefferson Davis by : Jefferson Davis
Download or read book The Papers of Jefferson Davis written by Jefferson Davis and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1989-04-01 with total page 821 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 6 of The Papers of Jefferson Davis, spanning the five crucial years before 1861, chronicles Davis’ last year as secretary of war and his return to the Senate, capstone of his long career of public service to the United States. Volume 6 includes 116 letters printed in full with annotation, a calendar of over 6,000 items, and summaries of 53 recently discovered documents dating from 1845 through 1855, as well as illustrations and maps prepared especially for the volume. Davis’ correspondence and his final report to Franklin Pierce mirror the concerns of his last months as head of the War Department—turmoil in Kansas, protection of western settlements, construction of the Washington Aqueduct, the Capitol extension and new dome, surveys for the Pacific Railroad, Indian relations, the camel experiment, army reorganization, and advances in weaponry. All these issues followed Davis to the Senate in March, 1857, but other questions soon claimed equal attention. As debates on abolition, state rights, fugitive slaves, and slavery in the territories became more frequent and more divisive, Davis found himself a major spokesman for his region. He was caught up in the momentous events testing the nation during James Buchanan’s administration: “bleeding Kansas,” Preston Brook’s attack on Charles Sumner, John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry, the 1860 Democratic conventions, the election of a Republican president, and the secession of South Carolina. He debated at length with Stephen A. Douglas and others over “squatter sovereignty” and offered his own resolutions on the relations of states as the basis for the Democratic platform in 1860. Personal correspondence gives revealing word pictures of Varina Davis and the children, the family’s sojourn in New England during the Summer of 1858, disastrous flooding at Brierfield in 1859, and Davis’ persistent, debilitating illnesses. Volume 6 covers fateful years for the nation and for Jefferson Davis, a man moving toward a destiny that he is both creating and hoping to avoid.

Book Synopsis Southern History Across the Color Line by : Nell Irvin Painter
Download or read book Southern History Across the Color Line written by Nell Irvin Painter and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The color line, once all too solid in southern public life, still exists in the study of southern history. As distinguished historian Nell Irvin Painter notes, we often still write about the South as though people of different races occupied entirely different spheres. In truth, although blacks and whites were expected to remain in their assigned places in the southern social hierarchy throughout the nineteenth century and much of the twentieth century, their lives were thoroughly entangled. This edition features refreshed essays and a new preface that sheds light on the development of Painter's thought and our continued struggles with racism in the twenty-first century"--
