Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Horsemastership A number Of horse-lovers, who have been kind enough to peruse Modern Horse Management, have asked me why I do not publish a few notes on the care of the horse now that hostilities have ceased. As a matter of fact, the book referred to above was published a considerable time after the war commenced, and since that date I have taken various notes from lessons learnt whilst connected with horses in the Cavalry for over three years in France. During the earlier days of the war, when I was attached to the Infantry, I always went out of my way to study the all-important art of Modern Horsemastership. Let me, however, before I approach the subject proper Of my lecture to-night, first of all thank major-general Campbell, g.o.c. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Care, Treatment, and Training of the English Race Horse, Vol. 1 of 2: In a Series of Rough Notes It may appear strange to my readers, and I confess it has appeared so to me, that, among the numerous works which, from time to time, have issued from the press, on the nature and general treatment of Horses, no treatise should have been given on the training of the English Race-horse. Such an omission, I am convinced, could not have arisen from an unbelief in the importance attached to the subject; it may, I think, be rather attributed to a conscious deficiency in practical knowledge among authors, who, in other respects, might be competent to the task. The training of race-horses at the establishments at Newmarket, and at various other well-conducted race-horse stables, has long since been ranked as a science, and it may, perhaps, be said to have attained perfection. Yet the public are comparatively unacquainted with the manner in which that noble animal, the race-horse, is brought into the admirable condition in which he is exhibited at the post. Even after more than twenty three centuries it is still, in the main, a sound and excellent guide for so much of the field as it covers. This fact, together with the simple and delightful manner in which the subject is treated, has led me to think that some who are not able or do not care to approach the book in the original Greek, might like'to read a translation of the earli est known work on the horse and how to ride him. To be sure, there have already been versions in English; but these seem to me, and have seemed to others, unsatisfactory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Care, Treatment, and Training of the English Race Horse, Vol. 2 of 2: In a Series of Rough Notes IF the training, running, and riding of race horses is not to be considered as a science, I think it may be fairly admitted, that it is a species of knowledge that can only be acquired by early experience, as by boys being put into training stables at twelve years of age, there to remain under a good practical training groom for at least ten or twelve years; and that it is only by the early impressions made on the minds of steady attentive boys, while they are going pro gressively on throughout the whole practical gra dations, both in and out of the stables, that they, on arriving at a state of manhood, become equal to undertaking, in every department of it, the management of a racing establishment.
