The modern scientific concep tion of heat is that it is produced by the motion of the particles of matter which compose any body. All matter is conceived as Heat. Being made up of small particles called molecules. These particles do not exist in a state of rest, but are in constant vibration. If these particles move slowly the body is at a low temperature; if they move more rapidly the body is at a higher temperature, the temperature of the body being determined by the rapidity of the motion of the particles. In measuring heat there are two properties to be considered - the intensity and the quantity. This may be compared to measuring water in a pipe. We measure the pressure of the water in the pipe by means of a gauge in pounds per square inch. The quantity of water is measured in pounds. In the same way the intensity of heat is measured by the thermometer in degrees and the quantity of heat is measured by com parison with the quantity of heat which a pound of water will absorb.
