No reviewer, in a review of this length, can do justice to it, or to the range of types it describes. In addition to 150 illustrations, it contains eight pages of bibliography and five pages of index. It will certainly become a standard work of reference for Irish typefacesí Printing Historical Society Bulletin
Book Synopsis Enigmas of Sacrifice by : W. J. Mc Cormack
Download or read book Enigmas of Sacrifice written by W. J. Mc Cormack and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enigmas of Sacrifice: A Critique of Joseph M. Plunkett and the Dublin Insurrection of 1916 is the first critical study of the religious poet and militarist Joseph M. Plunkett, who was executed with the other leaders of the Dublin insurrection of 1916. Through Plunkett the author gains access to areas of nationalist thought that were more often assumed or repressed than publicly formulated. In this eye-opening book, W. J. Mc Cormack explores and analyzes Plunkett’s brief life, work, and influence, beginning with his wealthy but dysfunctional family, irregular Jesuit education, and self-canceling sexuality. Mc Cormack continues through Plunkett’s active phase when amateur theatricals and a magazine editorship brought him into the emergent neonationalist discourse of early twentieth-century Ireland. Finally, the author arrives at Holy Week 1916, when Plunkett masterminded the forgery of official documentation in order to provoke and justify the insurrection he planned. Mc Cormack analyzes Plunkett’s significant texts and provides context through critical perspectives on his milieu. Enigmas of Sacrifice is unique in its effort to understand a major figure of Irish nationalism in terms that reach beyond political identity.

Book Synopsis The Reformations in Ireland by : Samantha A. Meigs
Download or read book The Reformations in Ireland written by Samantha A. Meigs and published by Springer. This book was released on 1997-10-13 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why was Ireland the only region in Europe which successfully rejected a state-imposed religion during the confessional era? This book argues that the anomalous outcome of the Reformations in Ireland was largely due to an unusual symbiosis between the Church and the old bardic order. Using sources ranging from Gaelic poetry to Jesuit correspondence, this study examines Irish religiosity in a European context, showing how the persistence of traditional culture enabled local elites to resist external pressures for reform.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is said that Bascom Lamar Lunsford would "cross hell on a rotten rail to get a folk song"—his Southern highlands folk-song compilations now constitute one of the largest collections of its kind in the Library of Congress—but he did much more than acquire songs. He preserved and promoted the Appalachian mountain tradition for generations of people, founding in 1928 the Mountain Dance and Folk Festival in Asheville, North Carolina, an annual event that has shaped America's festival movement. Loyal Jones pens a lively biography of a man considered to be Appalachian music royalty. He also includes a "Lunsford Sampler" of ballads, songs, hymns, tales, and anecdotes, plus a discography of his recordings.

Book Synopsis Irish and Scottish Art, c. 900-1900 by : Heather Pulliam
Download or read book Irish and Scottish Art, c. 900-1900 written by Heather Pulliam and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2024-11-30 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As evidenced by the famed Book of Kells and monumental high crosses, Scotland and Ireland have long shared a distinctive artistic tradition. The story of how this tradition developed and flourished for another millennium through survival, adaptation and revival is less well known. Some works were preserved and repaired as relics, objects of devotion believed to hold magical powers. Respect for the past saw the creation of new artefacts through the assemblage of older parts, or the creation of fakes and facsimiles. Meanings and values attached to these objects, and to places with strong early Christian associations, changed over time but their 'Celtic' and/or 'Gaelic' character has remained to the forefront of Scottish and Irish national expression. Exploring themes of authenticity, imitation, heritage, conservation and nationalism, these interdisciplinary essays draw attention to a variety of understudied artworks and illustrate the enduring link that exists between Scottish and Irish cultures.
