Book excerpt: Edward Gorey meets Downton Abbey in a deliciously ghostly caper about mischievous children who won t stay inside their gilded portrait frames. Welcome to Shiverhawk Hall It s a big old house full of treasure, mystery, and stories. Here, just look up on the wall. See these beautiful paintings? These are children who used to live here long ago: the DeVillechild twins, the Pinksweet tots . . . my, they look like such "good "children. So very well behaved. But wait a minute, did you "see "that? One of their eyes seemed to blink Did you "hear" that? A rustle A whisper The tiniest scratch Can it be that when darkness falls, the children on the walls at Shiverhawk Hall climb out of their paintings and run amok?"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, writing--a graphic, multidimensional form of communication--has been approached as a vehicle for representing, and therefore conveying, the spoken word. Moving beyond this manner of analysis, this volume interrogates writing as a medium that is not simply a handmaiden to oral and aural exchange but a communication system that is richly layered and experienced. To exploit this aspect of visual code, scholars from the fields of Egyptology, Sinology, Hittitology, and Assyriology, together with Mesoamericanists, art historians, and a sign language specialist, are brought together in this volume. In its pages, these contributors incorporate into their analyses methods more commonly used in linguistics and semiotics, communication studies, art historical analysis, and traditional philology to new ends in order to form original trajectories of inquiry. Each contribution either lays bare explicit exploitation of visuality in scribal production as a means to cement power, reveal the mystical, induce humor, or expose clandestine views or it locates implicit knowledge schemes and cultural maps underlying and informing these same productions. The pioneering investigations presented in Seen Not Heard reveal that although writing may be heard, the fact that it can also be seen affects its reception and therefore the meaning of any transported phonological units.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On August 29th, 2005, Hurricane Katrina ravaged the Gulf Coast and destroyed the lives of many. It also claimed the lives of hundreds and a thousand more. Howerever, what was the most tragic of all was the next storm that hit the Gulf Coast: The Federal Government. Many people turned to the government for help, but instead of an immediate response to this tragic event, their cries fell on deaf ears. They were told to help themselves. "If you can't help yourselves, then that's just tough." That was the message that was received by the people from the government. During those faith testing, physical draining, and mental waining days, however, some people survived. At almost every glance, in some way or another, they stared danger and death in it's face. But, their will to live kept them going. Their testimony is present here in this book. This book also documents the pains of poverty and the diabolic forms of racism that was used not only in the government's response, but also among some citizens that were sparred the wrath of Katrina. It also documents the struggle for those trying to rebuild their lives and the pain that continues from wreckless negligence. Despite the pain, this book attempts to document the great spirit of New Orleans and it's people that fight for their right of return. The purpose of this book is to bring out the truth. It's purpose is not just to tell the testimonies of those that stayed, but to also break down what really happened at that time. So I end with this question: Was it the wrath of Katrina that destroyed New Orleans or was it something more sinister?

Children enter the world full of questions and wrestle with deep, thoughtful issues, even if they do not always wonder them aloud. Many parents have the desire to discuss philosophical ideas with their children, but are unsure how to do so. The Philosophical Child offers parents guidance on how to gently approach philosophical questions with children of all ages. Jana Mohr Lone argues that for children to mature emotionally, they must develop their desire and ability to think abstractly about themselves and their experiences. This book suggests easy ways that parents can engage with their children's philosophical questions and help them develop their "philosophical selves."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethical loneliness is the experience of being abandoned by humanity, compounded by the cruelty of wrongs not being acknowledged. It is the result of multiple lapses on the part of human beings and political institutions that, in failing to listen well to survivors, deny them redress by negating their testimony and thwarting their claims for justice. Jill Stauffer examines the root causes of ethical loneliness and how those in power revise history to serve their own ends rather than the needs of the abandoned. Out of this discussion, difficult truths about the desire and potential for political forgiveness, transitional justice, and political reconciliation emerge. Moving beyond a singular focus on truth commissions and legal trials, she considers more closely what is lost in the wake of oppression and violence, how selves and worlds are built and demolished, and who is responsible for re-creating lives after they are destroyed. Stauffer boldly argues that rebuilding worlds and just institutions after violence is a broad obligation and that those who care about justice must first confront their own assumptions about autonomy, liberty, and responsibility before an effective response to violence can take place. In building her claims, Stauffer draws on the work of Emmanuel Levinas, Jean Améry, Eve Sedgwick, and Friedrich Nietzsche, as well as concrete cases of justice and injustice across the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's parents are all but completely disconnected from the commonsense parenting wisdom of their parents and grandparents. The self-esteem parenting revolution has erased the practical insights gathered by generations of parents about the best way to raise kids. In this book, John Rosemond seeks to recover this wisdom by resurrecting what parents of yesteryear tended to say. Maxims such as "because I said so," "children should be seen not heard," and "you're acting too big for your britches" are more than cute sayings for John. They are parenting principles, springing from a biblical view of the world. John makes the case that these principles from the good old days are just as valid today and will help parents to pass on values to their kids so that they can succeed at life. Grandma was right after all!

Book excerpt: A 2022 Choice Reviews Outstanding Academic Title How might society benefit if children were recognized as independent thinkers, capable of seeing clearly and contributing in valuable ways to our world? How would children’s lives change if what they said was not often ignored or patronized? In a series of conversations with children about many of life’s important philosophical questions, Seen and Not Heard reveals children as perceptive and original thinkers. Guided by discussions about the meaning of childhood, friendship, justice and fairness, happiness, and death, the book invites us to rethink our beliefs about children and become more receptive to the ways we can learn from them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lilian Medland has not received until now the recognition she deserves as a painter of birds. Due to world events and circumstances, five important books on birds containing her superb illustrations were never published. Despite such major disappointments, she continued to devote her time and talent to painting, first the birds of the British Isles and, later, those of Australia, her adopted country, where she died in 1955. Even now, she is not mentioned in the Australian Dictionary of Biography in her own right, but only in the entry for her husband, ornithologist Tom Iredale. Seen but Not Heard is the first publication to shine a light on the life and work of this much-overlooked but brilliant Australian natural history artist.
