Book Synopsis Ideas, Interests and Foreign Aid by : A. Maurits van der Veen
Download or read book Ideas, Interests and Foreign Aid written by A. Maurits van der Veen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do countries give foreign aid? Although many countries have official development assistance programs, this book argues that no two of them see the purpose of these programmes in the same way. Moreover, the way countries frame that purpose has shaped aid policy choices past and present. The author examines how Belgium long gave aid out of a sense of obligation to its former colonies, The Netherlands was more interested in pursuing international influence, Italy has focused on the reputational payoffs of aid flows and Norwegian aid has had strong humanitarian motivations since the beginning. But at no time has a single frame shaped any one country's aid policy exclusively. Instead, analysing half a century of legislative debates on aid in these four countries, this book presents a unique picture both of cross-national and over time patterns in the salience of different aid frames and of varying aid programmes that resulted.

Download or read book Development Aid to Nepal written by Sven Cederoth Cederroth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ongoing challenge for Western aid projects in the Third World is that all too often results do not meet expectations. Determined to address this issue at the outset before committing greater sums to its aid to Nepal, in 1996 the Norwegian Foreign Ministry commissioned an extensive analysis of development needs and concrete aid achievements for that country. Now substantially reworked and expanded with data not previously available to international scholars, this study of the energy, health and education sectors in Nepal - as well as the situation there of democracy and human rights - will be of especial interest to researchers and NGOs working in the area.
Book Synopsis Norway’s EU Experience and Lessons for the UK by : John Erik Fossum
Download or read book Norway’s EU Experience and Lessons for the UK written by John Erik Fossum and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-10-13 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines Norway’s affiliation to the EU and systematically assesses the potential suitability of this arrangement for the UK as a viable EU affiliation post-Brexit. Framing the book within the framework of the broader European context, the authors ask how much autonomy and room to manoeuvre tightly integrated non-member states have under this arrangement. They present an in-depth assessment of Norway’s close EU affiliation and provide insight into what this may reveal to us about the post-Brexit European political order. The book’s analytical framework centred on autonomy under complex interdependence has relevance well beyond the confines of the Norway case. This includes the UK, not least since the EU–UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA) leaves considerable uncertainty. It contains transitory elements; there will be implementation reviews, and there may be many more bilateral and multilateral agreements before the trade relationship is fully defined. This book will be of key interest to scholars and students of European Union politics, Norwegian politics, British politics, European integration, and, more broadly, to European studies and international relations.

Book Synopsis Fisheries Development by : Bjørn Hersoug
Download or read book Fisheries Development written by Bjørn Hersoug and published by Eburon Uitgeverij B.V.. This book was released on 2004 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All coastal states have ambitions for the development of their fisheries. Not only do fisheries play an important role in sustaining peoples' livelihoods, but also in many countries in the north and the south, fisheries are important for the national economy. Moreover, fisheries are part of the process of globalisation, which, for better or worse, means that fisheries issues and problems have implications that extend beyond the level of the nation state. Fisheries development: the institutional challenge is the result of a long-term research programme on fisheries in developing countries. The book explains how fisheries development strategies changed over the years, from simple ideas of modernising the production equipment (boats and gear) to complex programmes involving management and institution building. It highlights the role of the state and the community in resource management and the challenges offered by new concepts such as ecosystem management in a Third World setting. Book jacket.

Book Synopsis Rights and Riches by : Kjetil Fretheim
Download or read book Rights and Riches written by Kjetil Fretheim and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development aid has recently become an important part of international politics in general and Norwegian foreign policy in particular. This study explores the moral discourse of contemporary Norwegian development aid organisations and professional development workers. Adopting a discourse-analytical and multi-disciplinary approach, key concepts such as human rights, charity, justice and compassion are discussed. Furthermore, the notions of professionalism and partnerships in development are addressed, as well as the role and life-style of the individual development worker. The following development agencies have been analysed: Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Norwegian Church Aid, Save the Children Norway, and Norwegian People's Aid. Twenty-three staff members and representatives of these organisations have been interviewed.
Book Synopsis The Making and Circulation of Nordic Models, Ideas and Images by : Haldor Byrkjeflot
Download or read book The Making and Circulation of Nordic Models, Ideas and Images written by Haldor Byrkjeflot and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-10-19 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This critical and empirically based volume examines the multiple existing Nordic models, providing analytically innovative attention to the multitude of circulating ideas, images and experiences referred to as "Nordic". It addresses related paradoxes as well as patterns of circulation, claims about the exceptionality of Nordic models, and the diffusion and impact of Nordic experiences and ideas. Providing original case studies, the book further examines how the Nordic models have been constructed, transformed and circulated in time and in space. It investigates the actors and channels that have been involved in circulating models: journalists and media, bureaucrats and policy-makers, international organizations, national politicians and institutions, scholars, public diplomats and analyses where and why models have travelled. Finally, the book shows that Nordic models, perspectives, or ideas do not always originate in the Nordic region, nor do they always develop as deliberate efforts to promote Nordic interests. This book will be of key interest to Nordic and Scandinavian studies, European studies, and more broadly to history, sociology, political science, marketing, social policy, organizational theory and public management.
