Book Synopsis Norwegian Catch-Up by : Jonathon W. Moses
Download or read book Norwegian Catch-Up written by Jonathon W. Moses and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Norwegian Catch-Up' looks at the early Norwegian economic trajectory in the light of its external commitments and opportunities. Detailing Norway's economic performance relative to other countries at a time characterized by globalization, it has a particular focus on the role of international trade, investment and migration. The book examines how a small open state adapted successfully to the demands of (and opportunities provided by) a global market place. Not only did Norway manage an impressive economic record, but it developed concomitantly a strong and articulate labor movement and resilient democratic institutions. In short, the Norwegian example provides hope for development in a context of globalization. This text provides the student with a pioneering new vantage point for understanding the nature and scope of today's globalization and its effect on economic (and political) development. It also provides a historical reflection on the liberal antecedent of modern social democracy.

Book excerpt: The Colloquium at Wiesbaden was the seventh in a series organized by the Societe Universitaire Europeenne de Recherches Financieres (SUERF) at intervals since 1969. The titles, places and dates of previous Colloquia are noted on page ii, with brief particulars of the ensuing publications. From the beginning, the emphasis has been on money and finance in a European setting, and the most recent Colloquium, held in Wiesbaden for the three days beginning on September 29, 1977, followed this well-established pattern. The subject, "New Approaches in Monetary Policy", was divided into four aspects, each discussed in separate commissions, as described in the General Report (since the languages used by SUERF are English and French, it appears in the original French on page 327, and in an English translation, on page 355. Three other chapters and the Preface are in French. ) The separate commissions, each with its own chairman and rapporteur, were addressed by the authors of the specially written papers, all experts, active in their fields, and they also led the discussions. M. Raymond Bertrand, the President ofSUERF, was Chairman for the Colloquium as a whole, which was in plenary session for the opening and closing meetings. The Rapporteur General was Professor Paul Coulbois, whose report is mentioned above. Attendance at the Colloquium has risen over the years, and so has the number of papers presented.

This book was released on 2015-09-09 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper discusses key findings and recommendations of the Financial System Stability Assessment for Norway. Norway’s financial system coped well with the global financial crisis and has further increased buffers to deal with potential shocks, but significant financial imbalances have also built up since then. Stress tests suggest that under severe macroeconomic shocks, banks and life insurers could face important but manageable capital shortfalls. The authorities have taken significant measures to improve the oversight framework, but further strengthening is needed. The regulatory and supervisory framework is generally good, but some weaknesses need to be addressed.
Book Synopsis The Great Financial Crisis in Finland and Sweden by : Lars Jonung
Download or read book The Great Financial Crisis in Finland and Sweden written by Lars Jonung and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nordic financial crisis had it all: a botched liberalization, a huge boom followed by an even bigger bust, massive taxpayer-financed bailouts and, finally, deep long-run gains. The first-class team of scholars mobilized in this book convincingly tell a story that should be carefully studied by economists, bankers and policymakers. After this book, no one should be able to say: If we only knew ! Charles Wyplosz, Graduate Institute of International Studies, Geneva, Switzerland The financial crisis in Scandinavia in the early 1990s was a forerunner of the later world-wide crisis in 2007/8. Although the initial causation was different, the impact on their banks, though more localised, was just as severe. So we can benefit, and already policymakers have done so, from learning the lessons in this book on how to restore shattered banking systems to health. For this we owe a debt of gratitude to the editors, who have put together a series of key papers that emerged from a much larger exercise on the crisis that was earlier reported in four volumes in Swedish and Finnish. Amongst the many studies on current and past financial crises, this is a classic must-read . Charles A.E. Goodhart, London School of Economics, UK The Nordic experience with financial crisis resolution could not be more timely. Everyone cites it as an example of how it should be done , but rarely does one find careful and detailed analysis. Now policymakers and others searching for guidance will know where to look. Barry Eichengreen, University of California, Berkeley, US Following World War II, Nordic countries were commonly regarded as successful and stable economies. This perception was, however, shattered in the early 1990s when Finland and Sweden encountered severe financial crises. Here, the authors explore the symptoms of financial crisis decreasing real income, soaring unemployment and exploding public deficits and their devastating effects. The book compares and contrasts the experiences of Finland and Sweden, then adopts an international perspective, encompassing the experiences of Asia, Latin America, Denmark and Norway. Lessons from the 1990s crisis are drawn, and possible solutions prescribed. The conclusion is that long-term effects of financial crises financial liberalization and integration are not as dramatic as the short-term effects, but may prove to be of greater importance over time. Only the future will show whether these long-term benefits will balance or even outweigh the enormous short-term costs of the crises. Highly relevant to the current international financial crisis currently afflicting the world economy, this timely book will prove invaluable to economists and other social scientists with a general interest in financial crises, and to those with a more specific interest in the evolution and models of Scandinavian economies.

Book Synopsis Welfare States in Transition by : Gøsta Esping-Andersen
Download or read book Welfare States in Transition written by Gøsta Esping-Andersen and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1996-05-21 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This wide-ranging comparative analysis of contemporary and future changes in welfare states looks at the different trajectories of the welfare states of Europe, North America, the Antipodes, and the emerging scenarios in Latin America, East Asia and Central and Eastern Europe. Leading experts on each of these regions examine the current structures of social protection, consider the causes of the current welfare state crisis and highlight evolving trends for welfare policy. Different welfare states are shown to manifest different forms of crisis. Among the symptoms of crisis, Welfare States in Transition suggests that the effect of popluation ageing is exaggerated, and an at least equally fundamental challenge lies in the revolution of the modern family and the changing economic role of women. The contributors are sceptical about the neo-liberal formula for reform, not only because it increases inequality but also because it does not address the growing need for an active social investment policy to ensure against entrapment in poverty or low-paid jobs.
