Book excerpt: HELP FOR YOUNG READERS WHO ARE STRUGGLING AND FOR THOSE WITH ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE. It is believed that twenty or more percent of New Zealand children and many from other countries, particularly boys, are leaving formal education sadly deficient in the literary skills essential for normal living: without being able to read road directions or the instructions on a bottle of medicine. PART ONE of this book and the accompanying practice pages in "KEYS TO READING" has proved, with regular use, to be of great assistance to many young readers who are struggling to overcome a setback in their progress and has enabled them to become confident and fluent readers. For parents who are seeking desperately for clear guidance as to how they may help their children this program will provide a simple and effective plan to follow. PART TWO provides a simple outline of English grammar both for students who need some help in an easily understood form and for those with English as a second language. There is also help with written expression, spelling, and vocabulary. An extensive list of idioms should prove especially useful to those with English as a second language. Brian Elder is a graduate of Otago University, with a BA degree, majoring in English and trained as a teacher at Dunedin Teachers' College. He has taught all primary school grades, with most teaching at the Intermediate level, and was for many years a deputy principal at an Intermediate School. Apart from teaching his main interest has been organizing and leading Christian holiday camps for pre-teens, spending thirty years, during school vacations, as Camp Director of Christian youth camps Brian has always had a real concern for disadvantaged children and the Keys to Reading program has arisen from a perceived need to provide some practical help for boys and girls who have been struggling in this area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This account of a region transformed—and threatened—offers “a timely historical reflection on the important social role of science and scientists.”—Historical Geography In recent years, environmentalists have pointed urgently to the melting Arctic as a leading indicator of climate change. While climate change has unleashed profound transformations in the region, many commentators mislabel them as unprecedented. In reality, the landscapes of the North American Arctic—as well as relations among scientists, Inuit, and federal governments— are products of the region’s colonial past. And even as policy analysts, activists, and scholars clamor about the future of our world’s northern rim, few truly understand its past. In Unfreezing the Arctic, Andrew Stuhl brings a fresh perspective to this defining challenge of our time. Stuhl weaves together a wealth of episodes into a transnational history of the North American Arctic, providing a richer understanding of its social and environmental transformation. Drawing on historical records and extensive ethnographic fieldwork, as well as time spent living in the Northwest Territories, he examines the long-running interplay of scientific exploration, colonial control, the experiences of Inuit residents, and multinational investments in natural resources. With a comprehensive look at a century of scientific activity, he covers the political, economic, environmental, and social history of this transboundary region. “A worthy addition to the recent wave of work on northern history…Bridging the histories of colonialism, resource management, military activity, and Indigenous self-determination, Stuhl focuses on Alaska and northwest Canada, including the Beaufort Sea, Mackenzie Delta, and surrounding region.”—Canadian Journal of History The author intends to donate all royalties from this book to the Alaska Youth for Environmental Action (AYEA) and East Three School's On the Land Program.

But this particular conflict was more personal than most. His latest book is a fascinating and thought-provoking account of what happened when anti-whaling activists found themselves at odds with tribal rights. Conservationists, eco-warriors, whale protectors, and supporters of Indigenous traditions—as well as anyone who simply loves a good story—will find themselves captivated by this tale. DEATH OF A WHALE: The Challenge of Anti-Whaling Activists and Indigenous Rights narrates the events as they unfolded. In 1998, Sea Shepherd began a campaign to protect gray whales from slaughter by members of the Makah tribe of the Pacific Northwest, who had recently invoked cultural entitlements to allow them to practice their ancestral hunting rights. Makah members, conservationists, and non-Indigenous Americans vehemently expressed disparate points of view about whether tribal whaling operations, which had ended almost a century earlier, should be recognized, even when they were not in accord with international Indigenous whaling regulations. This electrifying, real-life adventure story showcases an Indigenous community at odds with itself, governments and media that advance their own agendas, and grassroots organizers who display heroic activism. Highly detailed and documented, the book reveals Captain Watson’s deep and unwavering respect for Indigenous traditions and rights, even when they conflict with his own devotion to the sovereignty of whales. "

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lieutenant George Washington De Long was an American explorer whose disastrous Arctic expedition gave evidence of a continuous ocean current across the Polar Regions. In July of 1879 he set sail from San Francisco taking the Jeannette through the Bering Strait and heading for Wrangel Island, off the northeast coast of Siberia. On September 5th, the ship became trapped in the pack ice near Herald Island (now Gerald Island), east of Wrangel. With crewman George Melville’s engineering skill, the boat was kept afloat for almost two years until it was finally crushed on June 12, 1881. The crew, including De Long, escaped with most of their provisions and three small boats. Their destination, the Siberian coast, lay some 600 miles away. They endured extreme hardships for the next two months as they crossed the ice. After reaching open water, one of the boats and the men aboard were lost. The remaining two boats became separated. De Long's boat reached the eastern side of the Lena River delta, Melville’s, reached the western side. Melville's party was rescued, but De Long and his men died of exposure and starvation. Melville later led an expedition that found the remains of De Long and his party the following Spring. De Long's journal, in which he made regular entries until shortly before his death, was found a year later and published as The Voyage of the Jeannette (1883). Three years after the Jeannette was sunk, wreckage from it was found on an ice floe on the southwest coast of Greenland, a discovery that gave new support to the theory of trans-Arctic drift.
