This book was released on 2010-03-08 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two of the world’s most dangerous flashpoints, this edited volume with contributions by leading scholars offers a comprehensive evaluation and comparison of approaches to conflict management and prevention on the Korean Peninsula and in the Taiwan Strait. The consequences of any escalation of these two conflicts and the difficulties in resolving them necessitate a fresh look at designing new strategies to prevent and contain conflict as well as highlighting the limitations of existing measures. Presenting both a theoretical and practical examination of conflict prevention and management, the volume provides a comparative analysis of the Korean Peninsula and the Taiwan Strait-identifying lessons that could be transferred between the two cases but also the obstacles to this. The experiences of other regions and the role of third parties are also examined. This is a valuable addition to the literature for students of peace and conflict studies as well as policy-makers with an interest in Northeast Asia.
Book Synopsis Northeast Asia's Turbulent Triangle by : Malcolm Cook

Book excerpt: In this workshop report the author examines the bilateral relationships in Northeast Asia. He argues that ties between China and Japan, China and South Korea, and South Korea and Japan are in a period of fundamental change driven mainly by domestic and bilateral factors. The author writes that China-South Korea relations are broadening in a positive direction, while Japan's relations with both China and South Korea are in a much less positive state. The report reasons that the factors driving these relations are not only important in shaping relations within Northeast Asia, they also have the potential to impact US-China relations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book does not argue for stronger security ties among the three countries based solely on a shared understanding of the threats posed by North Korea. Nor does it look toward containment of a rising China or resurgent Russia for its strategic rationale. Rather, the authors argue for broadening the foundation on which the three nations' ties rest. A better understanding of the complex weave of interests and values that binds the United States, South Korea, and Japan will stabilize the relationships and make them more resilient and adaptable to future developments."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: Examining the prospects for building a regional community in Northeast Asia, this book considers the foreign policies of the individual states as well as the impact of domestic politics on the regionalist agenda. It outlines the emerging Northeast Asian community and the domestic requisites for its evolution and realization, and puts it in context by comparing the emerging community with Southeast Asia. The book investigates the attitudes of the key powers, including China, Japan, South Korea, North Korea, Russia and the US, towards the ideal of greater regional cooperation, with particular emphasis on the implications of domestic factors in each country for regional dynamics. It explores the North Korean nuclear crisis, the continuing tensions over the Taiwan Straits, the impact of Sino-Japanese rivalry, the shift in stance of South Korea towards North Korea since 2001 and its implications for its relationship with the US, and Putin’s attempts to strengthen Russian influence in the region. It concludes by identifying the foremost dangers that risk obstructing greater regional cooperation, particularly the China-Japan rivalry, nationalist sentiments, territorial disputes and energy competition.

Book excerpt: Three counties -- China, Japan, and the United States -- and relations among them are likely to have a disproportionate impact on prospects for peace and prosperity in Asia Pacific in the twenty-first century. If the differences among these major actors are managed successfully, the prospects for the region are bright indeed. Conversely, if the three fail to manage their relationship successfully, or if relations between any two of the parties are seen to threaten the third, the risks for the region and beyond will increase dramatically.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic rise of China and the growing network of trade and investment relations in northeast Asia are causing major changes in human, economic, political, and military interaction among countries in the region. This is affecting U.S. relations with China, China's relations with its neighbors, the calculus for with Taiwan, and the basic interests and policies of China, Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea. These, in turn, affect U.S. strategy in Asia. China, for example, has embarked on a "smile strategy" in which it is attempting to co-opt the interests of neighboring countries through trade and investment while putting forth a less threatening military face. Under the rubric of the Six-Party Talks, the United States, China, Japan, Russia, and South Korea are cooperating to resolve the North Korean nuclear crisis. Taiwanese businesses have invested an estimated $70 to $100 billion in factories in coastal China. China relies on foreign invested enterprises for about half its imports and exports. For Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea, China has displaced the United States as their major trading partner. The implications of China's globalization and rise as a major economic power can be seen in its impact both on Beijing and on policy deliberations in Taipei, Tokyo, and Seoul. For China's trading partners, dependency on the Chinese market means that Beijing is looming larger in all aspects of policy making. While this is not likely to challenge U.S. security ties with Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, it raises several policy issues. One is how to deal with a modernizing and more powerful Chinese military financed by the growing Chinese economy. Another is how to explicitly incorporate into U.S. policy the greater weight that Beijing is being given in policy deliberations in Tokyo and Seoul. A further policy issue is whether to take measures to offset the rising economic clout of China and attempts by Beijing to create East Asian institutions with China at the center.

Book excerpt: The economic rise of China and the growing network of trade and investment relations in northeast Asia are causing major changes in human, economic, political, and military interaction among countries in the region. This is affecting U.S. relations with China, China's relations with its neighbors, the calculus for war across the Taiwan Straits, and the basic interests and policies of China, Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea. These, in turn, affect U.S. strategy in Asia. China, for example, has embarked on a "smile strategy" in which it is attempting to coopt the interests of neighboring countries through trade and investment while putting forth a less threatening military face (to everyone but Taiwan).
