Book Synopsis North-European Panel Paintings by : Christa Grössinger
Download or read book North-European Panel Paintings written by Christa Grössinger and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1992 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religious paintings still found today in English churches, cathedrals, and colleges have rarely been studied in depth. Hidden away in country churches and colleges, they have received little attention, and yet they add greatly to the understanding of Continental art of the late fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. This book brings together over 70 Northern European paintings and altar pieces. The artwork demonstrates the high quality of the output of Netherland workshops, particularly of the Antwerp Mannerists, as well as the remarkable individual works from Germany, many of which drew upon Dürer's prints for inspiration. The author traces the origins of the works, which were frequently produced with a foreign trade in mind, and shows how they found their way to their present locations, often as memorials, or to enrich the ecclesiastical buildings. By considering how these benefactions were made possible by the dispersal of religious works on the continent in the wake of the Napoleonic wars, picked up by travellers, or sold through the London art market, this book offers interesting insight into the history of collecting.

Book Synopsis Northern Renaissance Art by : Susie Nash
Download or read book Northern Renaissance Art written by Susie Nash and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-11-27 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a wide-ranging introduction to the way that art was made, valued, and viewed in northern Europe in the age of the Renaissance, from the late fourteenth to the early years of the sixteenth century. Drawing on a rich range of sources, from inventories and guild regulations to poetry and chronicles, it examines everything from panel paintings to carved altarpieces. While many little-known works are foregrounded, Susie Nash also presents new ways of viewing and understanding the more familiar, such as the paintings of Jan van Eyck, Rogier van der Weyden, and Hans Memling, by considering the social and economic context of their creation and reception. Throughout, Nash challenges the perception that Italy was the European leader in artistic innovation at this time, demonstrating forcefully that Northern art, and particularly that of the Southern Netherlands, dominated visual culture throughout Europe in this crucial period.

Book Synopsis European Art of the Fourteenth Century by : Sandra Baragli
Download or read book European Art of the Fourteenth Century written by Sandra Baragli and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2007 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fourteenth-century Europe was ravaged by famine, war, and, most devastatingly, the Black Plague. These widespread crises inspired a mystical religiosity, which emphasized both ecstatic joy and extreme suffering, producing emotionally charged and often graphic depictions of the Crucifixion and the martyrdoms of the saints. This third volume in the Art through the Centuries series highlights the most noteworthy concepts, geographic centers, and artists of this turbulent century. Important facts about the subjects under discussion are summarized in the margins of each entry, and salient features of the illustrated art works are identified and discussed.
Book Synopsis The Dawn of Christian Art in Panel Paintings and Icons by : Thomas F. Mathews
Download or read book The Dawn of Christian Art in Panel Paintings and Icons written by Thomas F. Mathews and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2017-02-01 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Staking out new territory in the history of art, this book presents a compelling argument for a lost link between the panel-painting tradition of Greek antiquity and Christian paintings of Byzantium and the Renaissance. While art historians place the origin of icons in the seventh century, Thomas F. Mathews finds strong evidence as early as the second century in the texts of Irenaeus and the Acts of John that describe private Christian worship. In closely studying an obscure set of sixty neglected panel paintings from Egypt in Roman times, the author explains how these paintings of the Egyptian gods offer the missing link in the long history of religious painting. Christian panel paintings and icons are for the first time placed in a continuum with the pagan paintings that preceded them, sharing elements of iconography, technology, and religious usages as votive offerings. Exciting discoveries punctuate the narrative: the technology of the triptych, enormously popular in Europe, traced by the authors to the construction of Egyptian portable shrines, such as the Isis and Serapis of the J. Paul Getty Museum; the discovery that the egg tempera painting medium, usually credited to Renaissance artist Cimabue, has been identified in Egyptian panels a millennium earlier; and the reconstruction of a ring of icons on the chancel of Saint Sophia in Istanbul. This book will be a vital addition to the fields of Egyptian, Graeco-Roman, and late-antique art history and, more generally, to the history of painting.
Book Synopsis Genre Imagery in Early Modern Northern Europe by : ArthurJ. DiFuria
Download or read book Genre Imagery in Early Modern Northern Europe written by ArthurJ. DiFuria and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the rich variety of pictorial rhetoric in early modern northern European genre images, this volume deepens our understanding of genre's place in early modern visual culture. From 1500 to 1700, artists in northern Europe pioneered the category of pictures now known as genre, portrayals of people in ostensibly quotidian situations. Critical approaches to genre images have moved past the antiquated notion that they portray uncomplicated 'slices of life,' describing them instead as heavily encoded pictorial essays, laden with symbols that only the most erudite contemporary viewers and modern iconographers could fully comprehend. These essays challenge that limiting binary, revealing a more expansive array of accessible meanings in genre's deft grafting of everyday scenarios with a rich complex of experiential, cultural, political, and religious references. Authors deploy a variety of approaches to detail genre's multivalent relations to older, more established pictorial and literary categories, the interplay between the meaning of the everyday and its translation into images, and the multifaceted concerns genre addressed for its rapidly expanding, unprecedentedly diverse audience.
