Adjacent to the anthracite coal regions of Luzerne and Lackawanna Counties, the Back Mountain includes Kingston Township, Trucksville, Shavertown, Dallas, Huntsville, Lehman, and Harveys Lake. Historically the area offered many forms of recreation and entertainment, which brought tourists from all over the Northeast. Harveys Lake is the largest natural lake in Pennsylvania, and it became a major resort destination in the early 20th century. Pennsylvanias Back Mountain is a compilation of rare photographs documenting this historic community and revealing a bygone era of amusement parks, hotels, railroads, and steamboats.

Book excerpt: Located between the Penobscot, Wilkes-Barre, and Nescopeck Mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania at the headwaters of the Wapwallopen Creek, Mountain Top consists of Wright, Fairview, Dorrance, Slocum, and Rice Townships as well as Nuangola Borough. Settlers entering its rugged forests in the 18th century established lumber camps, sawmills, and farms. Blacksmith shops and taverns opened near rural crossroads at Dorrance, Slocum, and Albert's Corners. During the 19th century, transportation networks moving anthracite from nearby mines to distant markets traversed the region. The neighborhoods of Solomon's Gap and Penobscot grew along with the Lehigh & Susquehanna, Lehigh Valley, and New Jersey Central Railroads, while resorts at Glen Summit and Lake Nuangola attracted seasonal visitors. Access to Mountain Top by motor vehicle improved throughout the 20th century. The construction of Route 309 and Interstates 80 and 81 paved the way for commercial and residential development, including the Crestwood Industrial Park. Today, Mountain Top is a growing suburban community of nearly 17,000 people who enjoy and support its parks, churches, businesses, and schools.

A Field Guide to Conservation Finance provides essential advice on how to tackle the universal obstacle to protecting private land in America: lack of money. Story Clark dispels the myths that conservationists can access only private funds controlled by individuals or that only large conservation organizations have clout with big capital markets. She shows how small land conservation organizations can achieve conservation goals using both traditional and cutting-edge financial strategies. Clark outlines essential tools for raising money, borrowing money, and reducing the cost of transactions. She covers a range of subjects including transfer fees, voluntary surcharges, seller financing, revolving funds, and Project Related Investment programs (PRIs). A clear, well-written overview of the basics of conservation finance with useful insights and real stories combine to create a book that is an invaluable and accessible guide for land trusts seeking to protect more land.

Book excerpt: Save This Land discusses some topical issues of the environment. In each of the six chapters, a topic is chosen, the problem is analysed, the dangers are described and the solutions are presented with an appeal to all for proaction to save this land. The imminent desertification caused by deforestation of land, amply served by the monsoon, must be averted by the construction of hundreds of thousands of micro-dams. The threat of sea level rise needs to be combated by undertaking a massive project of Coastal Works. The Ganga could remain perennial only with significant reforestation and strengthening of lateral and terminal moraines in the Himalaya. “When rivers die, civilisations die,” and this land faces an existential crisis because of the rivers choked to death by a vast deposition of sediments that need to be excavated for their revival. The Hirakud Dam on the Mahanadi must be revived too. Bodies of good clean drinking water are the heritage of humanity and they are getting polluted. The water quality is paramount and must be maintained.

One family continues on into the wild frontier area of the Endless Mountains and vast unharvested forest of Hemlock trees. Soon the two families unite and start baking cookies and crackers for the hungry miners and lumbermen. Before long, their biscuits and cakes are being distributed in 43 states and beyond. The reader is taken on a journey of small town life with numerous photos and illustrations, many never before seen.
