Book Synopsis South Norfolk by : Raymond L. Harper
Download or read book South Norfolk written by Raymond L. Harper and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2003-03-19 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Norfolk, Virginia, now a part of the bustling metropolis of Chesapeake, was once a small, close-knit community with sprawling farms and cozy locally-owned businesses. South Norfolk had its beginnings as a village. As population increased, it became a town, then a city of the second class, and finally, a city of the first class. By this time, South Norfolk was already offering residents a friendly, small-town identity in the midst of lovely homes, schools, and churches. Through vintage and present-day photographs, readers will experience the nostalgic and striking contrast between the world of old South Norfolk and the Chesapeake of today. Step back in time when life moved at a slower pace, and the community blossomed with friendship, trust, and goodwill. Meet prominent families such as the Portlocks and the Tilleys; travel dirt streets lined with horse-drawn wagons and a variety of vendors; walk the wintry snow-covered paths of beautiful Lakeside Park; visit the Grand Theatre, Jus Maid Ice Cream Store, Gornto's Bakery; or catch up with the gang at Preston's Pharmacy.

Book Synopsis Norfolk and Western Railway Stations and Depots by : C. Nelson Harris
Download or read book Norfolk and Western Railway Stations and Depots written by C. Nelson Harris and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2009-12-07 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tracks of the Norfolk and Western Railway snaked through Virginias Shenandoah Valley and the coalfields of West Virginia. For nearly 100 years, the Norfolk and Western brought freight, passengers, and economic vitality to large cities and rural mining towns. At each stop was the depot or station; some stations were large, architecturally ornate structures that represented the muscular energy and romantic era of this great steam railway with its famed J-class engines. In other places there were small wooden depots that depicted the hard-scrabble life of the mining communities, tucked amid steep mountain valleys that were indelibly shaped by the railways presence. Today some of those structures remain, while many disappeared when the railway ceased passenger or other service. The Norfolk and Western eventually merged with the Southern Railway, and though the trains of the Norfolk Southern still run along those same lines, they simply pass by where they used to stop many years ago.
Download or read book Norfolk, Nebraska written by and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded in 1866 by German immigrants, Norfolk, Nebraska grew up along the banks of the North Fork of the Elkhorn River. The original 250 settlers founded Madison County's first church and school, and from these humble beginnings grew a town that today is the jewel in the crown of northeast Nebraska and the state's third largest retail area. Showcasing over 200 images, Sheryl Schmeckpeper traces the history of this community from its roots as a Native American campground, to a sleepy farming community, and finally to a bustling city. Although there are many anonymous people pictured here who contributed to the Norfolk of today, readers will recognize the more familiar faces of Herman Gereke, Dr. "Diamond Dick" Tanner, and Johnny Carson. Vividly captured are the landmarks that are gone forever, such as the Granada Theater, the Sugar City Cereal Mill, and the old high school that burned down in 1907. Also included are never before published photographs of the flood of 1944, the blizzard of 1948, and the Chicago Lumber Company fire.
