Book excerpt: Recent advances in textile and paper technology have made possible products from these two industries whose end uses are closely parallel or substantially identical. The nonwoven fabrics produced by the textile industry in many cases resemble paper structures, and the use of synthetic and semisynthetic fibers with conventional papermaking equipment gives rise to products effective in applications where paper has not normally been used in the past. Particularly, in the areas of end use which overlap, it is difficult and perhaps unnecessary to differentiate synthetic fiber papers from nonwoven fabrics. After all, in the broadest sense, ordinary paper may be thought of as a "nonwoven fabric.".

Web formation and web bonding processes have recently being enhanced. Nowadays, fibres, granulates, binder and finishing agents are used. This development entails a wider range of applications in the fields of hygiene, medicine, the garment-producing and building industries, interior design as well as further technical uses. This book provides comprehensive information about nonwovens, from the raw material fibres via the manufacturing processes to finishing and to the ready-made product. Nonwoven characteristics and the fields of application are discussed in detail as well as the processes available to test the raw materials, the intermediate and the final products. This book will be the standard reference on nonwovens in the years to come!

Book excerpt: "Nonwoven industry plays an important role in economy and society. Nonwoven Fabric : Manufacturing and Applications addresses important data on both natural and synthetic fibres that are used in the industry to develop products for different purposes. Though synthetic fibres are extensively used in the nonwoven industry for the manufacture of various products, natural fibres are steadily occupying the market due to some of their obvious merits. In this respect, a review of the various manufacturing techniques for nonwoven fabric derived from natural fibres such as cotton, jute, flax and hemp is given in this book. Next, the authors assess the structure, property, evaluation and applications of jute and jute blended needle-punched nonwoven fabric, in an effort to aid those who work with natural lingo-cellulosic fibre-based needle punched nonwovens. In addition, flax/low melting point polyester needle punched nonwoven fabrics were manufactured and characterized for thermal insulation applications. The test results show a decrease in thermal resistance value with an increase in low melt PET % and needle penetration depth. Six types of recycled nonwovens samples were developed using thermal bonding and aero dynamic methods, and these samples are characterized by their physical properties such as areal density, bulk density, thickness, porosity, air permeability and thermal resistance. The authors assess the way in which the increased use of fire retardant materials in industries has put considerable pressure on the scientific community to develop new polymer materials, chemicals, and fiber combinations for such applications. This compilation concludes with an overview of the history, common raw materials, manufacturing processes, properties, functions and applications of nonwoven geotextiles. The potential use of recycled nonwoven geotextiles towards a more sustainable construction is also discussed"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Second edition (1997): We have taken this opportunity to revise the original and to add new information about developments since 1990. . . . Since 1990 there have been considerable changes in the nature of the fibers being produced, the production methods and in consumers values and expectations. . . . Since 1990, the march of high-tech fibers has continued with an ever-increasing sub-division to meet the specialised applications, as in high-performance, high-function and high-sense fibers. New research and development has produced fibers with high tenacity and modulus to give the super-fibers now used as industrial materials. . . . [n]ew . . . ultrafine fibers can emulate the functionality and ambience of biological fibers. The synthetic cellulosics have made a particular resurgence since 1990, and the various solvent-spun fibers . . . are now making a great impact on the market. They now offer the processability of synthetics along with the in-built advantages of natural cotton. We hope . . . that the approach of the 1st edition is now extended to illustrate the dynamism of this frontier industry, pointing the way forward into the next century. If you think fiber technology is a mature technology, this new book may change your mind. It examines many new high-performance, application-specific synthetic fibers recently introduced. Included are details of chemistry, research and development, properties and performance, processing, and specific industrial, consumer and medical applications. This extensive survey of new fibers and fiber technology serves the information needs of all those involved in the development and commercialization of new and improved fibers. (It also provides fascinating reading for all those interested in this subject.)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The processing of nonwovens depends on a range of technologies, some adapted from the textile and paper industries, others developed uniquely for nonwovens production. The present volume provides a systematic step-by-step explanation of virtually all processes that integrate relevant raw materials into finished nonwovens for different end uses. In comprehensive terms, the book explains the connection between the structure of nonwovens and the specialized, as well as still evolving, technologies used to produce them - from simple roll goods to nanoscale webs and fiberwebs. The unified treatment in the book is meant to serve the needs of engineering and technology students. For students and instructors, the text also offers reviews of basic chemistry, polymer physics and heat transfer concepts, which are linked to processing and design information. Problems and exercises are presented for classroom study and individual practice. The book can also be used profitably as a self-teaching tool by professionals working in or new to the nonwovens industry. From the Foreword by John Hearle In comparison with other publications, the present book covers the great diversity of nonwovens and emphasizes how new types of nonwovens can be created through the use of novel fibres. This approach integrates many aspects of fibres and textile structures that are not associated with the conventional forms of nonwovens, which were established over the last fifty years. In this sense the book summarizes existing technical knowledge and suggests ways of going beyond it.
