Öffentliche Zuschüsse gehen zurück und soziale Institutionen müssen sich selbstständig nach neuen Geldgebern umsehen oder mit geringerer finanzieller Unterstützung haushalten. Die Jahre des Selbstkostendeckungsprinzips sind längst vorbei und in den Zeiten von Budgets und Entgelten gilt auch für Non-Profit Organisationen der härter werdende Wettbewerb. Eine Anpassung an neue und komplexere Umweltveränderungen, an einen schnelleren Wandel und an eine steigende Wettbewerbsintensität ist somit unumgänglich. Strategische Herausforderungen nehmen zu und um das Überleben von Non-Profit Organisationen zu sichern und vorhandene Ressourcen besser zu nutzen sind strategische Steuerungselemente nötig, welche jedoch meist nicht vorhanden oder längst nicht mehr zeitgemäß sind. Das Managementsystem der Balanced Scorecard, welches Anfang der neunziger Jahre von den Amerikanern Robert S. Kaplan und David P. Norton für den privaten Sektor entwickelt wurde, ist solch ein Steuerungselement und wird inzwischen auch im öffentlichen Sektor erfolgreich eingeführt. Zahlreiche Veröffentlichungen, Seminare und Beratungs-projekte spiegeln ein großes Interesse an diesem System wieder und die Balanced Scorecard wird geradezu als „Wunderwaffe“ für alle Probleme des strategischen Managements angepriesen. Durch die ganzheitliche Sicht auf eine Organisation und der Betonung von „weichen“ Erfolgsfaktoren (wie Mitarbeitermotivation und -entwicklung), neben den üblichen „harten“ Kennzahlen (wie Finanzziele und Prozessbeschreibungen), gilt die Balanced Scorecard für Non-Profit Organisationen als besonders geeignet. Die vorliegende Arbeit: „Die Balanced Scorecard für Non-Profit Organisationen“ beschäftigt sich mit dieser scheinbar „besonders guten“ Eignung der Balanced Scorecard für NPOs.
