Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nanomaterials in Rocket Propulsion Systems covers the fundamentals of nanomaterials and examines a wide range of innovative applications, presenting the current state-of-the-art in the field. Opening with a chapter on nano-sized energetic materials, the book examines metal nanoparticles-based fuels, ballistic modifiers, stabilizers and catalysts as the components of rocket propellants. Hydrogen storage materials for rocket propulsion based on nanotubes are then discussed, as are nano-porous materials and metal organic frameworks, nano-gelled propellants, nano-composite ablators and ceramic nano-composites. Other applications examined include high thermal conductivity metallic nano-composite nozzle liners, nano-emitters for Coulomb propulsion of space-crafts, and highly thermostable nano-ceramics for rocket motors. The book finishes with coverage of combustion of nano-sized rocket fuels, nano-particles and their combustion in micro- and nano-electromechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS), plasma propulsion and nano-scale physics. Users will find this to be a valuable resource for academic and government institutions, professionals, new researchers and graduate students working in the application of nanomaterials in the aerospace industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Propellants and Explosives Explosives and propellants are termed energetic materials for containing considerable chemical energy which can be converted into rapid expansion. In contrast to simple burning of a fuel, explosives and propellants are self-contained and do not need external supply of oxygen via air. Since their energy content thus inherently creates the risk of accidental triggering of the explosive reaction, proper synthesis, formulation, and handling during production and use are of utmost importance for safety and necessitate specialist knowledge on energetic materials, their characteristics, handling, and applications. Now in its third edition, the classic on the thermochemical aspects of the combustion of propellants and explosives is completely revised and updated and includes green propellants as new topic. The combustion processes of typical energetic crystalline and polymeric materials and various types of propellants and pyrolants are presented to provide an informative, generalized approach for the understanding of the combustion mechanisms of those materials. The first half of the book represents an introductory text on pyrodynamics, describing fundamental aspects of the combustion of energetic materials. The second half highlights applications of energetic materials as propellants, explosives and pyrolants with focus on phenomena occurring in rocket motors. In addition, the appendix gives a brief overview of the fundamentals of aerodynamics and heat transfer, which is a prerequisite for the study of pyrodynamics. A detailed reference for readers interested in rocketry or explosives technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analytical models were developed for the linearized pressure-coupled and velocity-coupled combustion response functions of composite propellants. The theory is that compositional fluctuations occur in the course of composite propellant burning, that these fluctuations originate from the inherent heterogeneity of the propellant microstructure, and that they will contribute to the nonsteady combustion under oscillating pressure (and velocity) conditions. Properties of the response to compositional fluctuations were determined and compared with responses to pressure and velocity fluctuations in series of parametric studies. The response to compositional fluctuations was found to be relatively strong response. Each response tended to increase with increasing AP particle size and pressure, and with decreasing mean crossflow velocity. A series of experiments was carried out with three propellants to determine whether or not certain features of the microstructure could be measured and correlated with response function behavior. Additional tasks pertaining to nonlinear combustion response and high frequency combustion response were performed and are described in the text. A list of publication generated by or in the course of this program is presented.

Book excerpt: This book, a translation of the French title Technologie des Propergols Solides, offers otherwise unavailable information on the subject of solid propellants and their use in rocket propulsion. The fundamentals of rocket propulsion are developed in chapter one and detailed descriptions of concepts are covered in the following chapters. Specific design methods and the theoretical physics underlying them are presented, and finally the industrial production of the propellant itself is explained. The material used in the book has been collected from different countries, as the development of this field has occurred separately due to the classified nature of the subject. Thus the reader not only has an overall picture of solid rocket propulsion technology but a comprehensive view of its different developmental permutations worldwide.

Pressed ammonium perchlorate (AP) pellets of varying purity, AP/binder sandwich burners, and propellant strands were employed. AP/binder sandwich burners where studied in an optically equipped centrifuge and color schlieren were taken in a conventional combustion bomb. Ascast and dewetted propellants were used to study the effect of preferential interfacial reactions on burning rate acceleration sensitivity. Results are discussed for the effects of acceleration, pressure, AP purity, and propellant composition on the burning rate. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The memorandum summarizes the available information on the compatibility of liquid rocket propellants with prominent materials of construction. Fuels and oxidizers of current interest are discussed. The corrosion data which are presented will apply to storing, handling, and control equipment outside of missiles and to missile components excluding combustion chamber. The compatibility of materials with reaction products in combustion chambers, nozzles, etc., is not considered. Included in the summary are data for many nonmetallic materials. The memorandum is subdivided into sections according to the propellant. Each material of construction is rated for a given medium as belonging to one of four classes, based primarily upon corrosion resistance. Consideration also is given to such factors as catalytic decomposition and sensitivity to impact.
