Book excerpt: A method of analyzing nonlinear static and dynamic responses of deformable solids has been developed based on an incremental variational formulation using the Lagrangian mode of description. The material nonlinearity due to plasticity or viscoplasticity as well as the geometric nonlinearity due to large displacements are considered. The equations of motion are obtained in a linearized incremental form using the principle of virtual work and solved using step-by-step numerical integration procedures. Equilibrium check is made at the end of each step and the residual forces are added to the next increment for improved accuracy over the pure incremental method. For elastic-plastic solutions the flow theory of plasticity is used along with the von Mises yield condition for isotropically hardening materials. The viscoplastic constitutive theory is also in the form of an associated flow law and capable of considering strain rate sensitive behavior. The viscoplastic strains are taken into account using an initial strain formulation. The discretization of the structure is achieved by the use of degenerate isoparametric finite elements and the computer codes that have been developed are capable of analyzing large axisymmetric deformations of shells of revolution. Book excerpt: This paper presents the formulation and methods of solution for the geometrically nonlinear analysis of shells of revolution under both symmetric and asymmetric loadings. The static solution is obtained through Newton-Raphson and incremental approaches. Four methods are tried for the dynamic solution with Houbolt's method proving to be the most suitable. Examples are presented for some linear and highly nonlinear problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thin shells are very popular structures in many different branches of engineering. There are the domes, water and cooling towers, the contain ments in civil engineering, the pressure vessels and pipes in mechanical and nuclear engineering, storage tanks and platform components in marine and offshore engineering, the car bodies in the automobile industry, planes, rockets and space structures in aeronautical engineering, to mention only a few examples of the broad spectrum of application. In addition there is the large applied mechanics group involved in all the computational and experimental work in this area. Thin shells are in a way optimal structures. They play the role of·the "primadonnas" among all kinds of structures. Their performance can be extraordinary, but they can also be very sensitive. The susceptibility to buckling is a typical example. David Bushnell says in his recent review paper entitled "Buckling of Shells - Pitfall for DeSigners": "To the layman buckling is a mysterious, perhaps even awe inspiring phenomenon that transforms objects originally imbued with symmetrical beauty into junk".

Book Synopsis Static and Dynamic Buckling of Shallow Spherical Shells Subjected to a Axisymmetric and Nearly Axisymmetric Step Pressure Loads Using SATANS-IIA, a Modified Version of SATANS-II. by : Michael D. Shutt

Shutt and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A digital computer program for the geometrically nonlinear analysis of totally arbitrarily loaded shells of revolution (SATANS-2) was modified to more accurately account for the conditions at the pole of the shell. This program was used to determine the buckling load of shallow spherical shells of various sizes when subjected to static axisymmetric, dynamic axisymmetric, and dynamic nearly axisymmetric step-pressure loads of infinite duration. A comparison was made between the new buckling results and previous results obtained without the new pole routine. The comparison revealed a significant change in the buckling pressures, due solely to the change in the pole routine. The new static axisymmetric, dynamic axisymmetric, and even the dynamic asymmetric critical buckling pressure loads appear to be fairly reliable results for perfect, shallow shells.
