Only recently, however, has the rapid increase in the power and directivity of the radio transmitters made it possible to alter the properties of the ionosphere strongly and to modify it artificially by applying radio waves. This has revealed a variety of new physical phenomena. Their study is not only of scien tific interest but also undisputedly of practical interest, and is presently progressing very rapidly. This monograph is devoted to an exposition of the present status of theoretical research on this problem. Particular attention is paid, naturally, to problems in the development of which the author himself took part. It is my pleasant duty to thank V. L. Ginzburg, L. P. Pitaevskii, V. V. Vas'kov, E. E. Tsedilina, A. B. Shvartsburg, and Va. S. Dimant for useful discussions and for valuable remarks during various stages of the work on the problem considered in this book. Contents 1. Book excerpt: This document describes a theoretical and experimental study of the interaction of high power, high frequency radio waves with the lower ionosphere. The theoretical calculations presented here show that the electron temperature of the ionospheric plasma can be greatly enhanced when the plasma is irradiated by a powerful groundbased HF transmitter with an effective radiated power of the order of 100 MW. If this plasma heating is maintained for times exceeding a few seconds, the composition of the plasma can also be altered. These temperature and composition modifications cause significant changes in the plasma conductivity and wave absorption in the medium. Two experiments were conducted in order to test for the predicted absorption and conductivity modifications: a vertical incidence plus absorption experiment and a nonlinear demodulation experiment. Data from the absorption experiment clearly show a large (9 dB) increase in wave absorption at 2.4 MHz due to a high power (60 MW ERP) HF heating of the ionosphere. The nonlinear demodulation experiment generated strong VLF radiation when the ionosphere was irradiated by a powerful modulated HF wave. These VLF signals are believed to be due to HF heating induced conductivity modulation of the dynamo current system. (Author).

Book excerpt: During the past few decades, various investigations on nonlinear heating of the auroral region of the ionosphere and problems related to lower ionosphere are resulted in opening up a new dimension towards the study of various physical processes and also on the characteristics of different parameters of Atmospheric Electricity within the middle and lower ionosphere. This book embodies the results of some of the investigations in these areas. Some modeling works have been performed and results are compared with experimental data of other researchers. Some experiments were undertaken based on the own experimental arrangements from Kolkata and Agartala, India centers during disturbed ionospheric and atmospheric conditions and results are presented here. There are other areas to be explored and further studies are contemplated to gather more information. I shall deem my labour amply rewarded if the matters presented in the book prove to be useful and worthy to the scientific community in this field.

Book excerpt: Nonlinear effects of parametric and of heating type, produced in a plasma under the action of an electric field E(sub 0)(e exp i(omega)t), are considered in this work in connection with the Tethered Magnetospheric Cloud (TMC) accompanying the Tether Satellite System (TSS). The theoretical results show that these phenomena should appear in the ionosphere at high altitudes Z greater than or = (150-200) km, particularly, at Z approximately = 300 km of the TSS system orbit. Therefore, it is of a special interest to search these phenomena by such a unique experiment as the forthcoming first TSS-I and by the future, perhaps modified TSS missions. Because of the parametric decay instability, new branches of wave may be excited both around the electron and ion Lengmuir frequencies Omega (sub 0) = 2(pi)f(sub 0) and Omega (sub 0) = 2(pi)f(sub 0) under the influence of high frequency (HF), (f less than or = 10(exp 6) to few 10(exp 6) Hz), strong electric waves. The heating of all the kinds of particles is growing up very quickly in the ionosphere with altitude in the extra low and very low frequency ranges, F approximately = (1 to 10(exp 4) Hz, discussed below. The temperatures (energies), for example, of the electrons accelerated by the electric field become larger than the ionization potential in this frequency range already at altitudes Z greater than or = (150 - 200) km when the amplitude of the electric field is the absolute value of E(sub 0) approximately = (1-2) mV/m. The sources of these electric fields may be in the TSS-I mission, that so called Phantom Loop (PL) - the Tethered Electrodynamic Tail (TET), and the different kind of electromagnetic oscillations produced by different kinds of instabilities in the TMC plasma. The growth rates of these instabilities will become very high in the TSS surrounding magnetoplasma. However, in the future TSS missions, special artificial sources (generators) of electric fields should be used for these investigations. Alpert, Yakov ...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigated was a very important mechanism for the decay of upper hybrid waves into electron Bernstein waves. This mechanism operates only in a very narrow resonance region around the harmonics of the electron cyclotron frequency. The researchers calculated the width of these resonances and compared the analytical results with experimental observations. They found very good agreement with all available data. They found a simple mechanism for the generation of upper hybrid waves from the pump made by direct conversion. Simple estimates indicate how extremely large amplitude waves can be generated.

Book excerpt: Nonlinear Wave and Plasma Structures in the Auroral and Subauroral Geospace presents a comprehensive examination of the self-consistent processes leading to multiscale electromagnetic and plasma structures in the magnetosphere and ionosphere near the plasmapause, particularly in the auroral and subauroral geospace. It utilizes simulations and a large number of relevant in situ measurements conducted by the most recent satellite missions, as well as ground-based optical and radar observations to verify the conclusions and analysis. Including several case studies of observations related to prominent geospacer events, the book also provides experimental and numerical results throughout the chapters to further enhance understanding of how the same physical mechanisms produce different phenomena at different regions of the near-Earth space environment. Additionally, the comprehensive description of mechanisms responsible for space weather effects will give readers a broad foundation of wave and particle processes in the near-Earth magnetosphere. As such, Nonlinear Wave and Plasma Structures in the Auroral and Subauroral Geospace Nonlinear Wave and Plasma Structures in the Auroral and Subauroral Geospace is a cutting-edge reference for space physicists looking to better understand plasma physics in geospace. Presents a unified approach to wave and particle phenomena occurring in the auroral and subauroral geospace Summarizes the most current theoretical concepts related to the generation of the large-scale electric field near the plasmapause by flows of hot plasma from the reconnection site Includes case studies of the observations related to the most “famous events during the last 20 years as well as a large number of experimental and numerical results illustrated throughout the text

Book excerpt: The book is devoted to several topical questions in modern mathematical and theoretical physics, astrophysics, geophysics, and cosmology that remain unsolved within the framework of the standard approaches. To them, one can attribute unexplained properties of the magnetic fields of stars and planets, puzzles of the Earth's atmosphere, the phenomenon of ball lightning, the problem of a qualitative description for nuclear forces and their well-known property of saturation, enigmatic properties of spiral galaxies, the problem of the cosmological singularity, mysteries of the dark matter and dark energy, amongst others. To find theoretical ways for understanding such phenomena, new nonlinear generalizations of the classical field theories and advanced methods to solve nonlinear equations arising in them are studied and presented in this book.
