Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2003 in the subject Engineering - Mechanical Engineering, grade: 5.0, Nile Valley University, course: BSc, language: English, abstract: The objective of this book is to present a complete and up to date treatment of rectangular laminated plates with uniform cross sections. Dynamic Relaxation (DR) method is presented for the geometrically linear and nonlinear laterally loaded, rectangular laminated plates. The analysis uses the Mindlin plate theory which accounts for transverse shear deformation. A computer program has been compiled. The convergence and accuracy of the DR solutions for elastic small and large deflection response are established by comparison with various exact and approximate solutions. New numerical results are generated for uniformly loaded square laminated plates which serve to quantify the effects of shear deformation, material anisotropy, fiber orientation, and coupling between bending and stretching. It was found that linear analysis seriously over-predicts deflections of plates. The shear deflection depends greatly on a number of factors such as length/ thickness ratio, degree of anisotropy and number of layers. It was also found that coupling between bending and stretching can increase or decrease the bending stiffness of a laminate depending on whether it is positive or negative.

Book excerpt: Dynamic Relaxation method coupled with finite differences is used for the analysis of rectangular laminates. In this method, the equilibrium equations are converted to dynamic equations by adding damping and inertia terms. These are then expressed in finite differences form and the solution is obtained by an iterative procedure. The functions of the DR program are as follows: read the data file, compute the stiffness of the laminate, the fictitious densities, the velocities and displacements and the mid-plane deflections and stresses, check the stability of the numerical computations, convergence of the solution, and the wrong convergence, compute through thickness stresses in direction of plate axes, and transform through thickness stresses in the lamina principal axes. The errors inherent in the DR technique include discretization error which is due to the replacement of a continuous function with a discrete function, and an additional error due to the non-exact solution of the discrete equations. The present DR results are compared with similar studies to validate the DR program, and the results are found of acceptable accuracy.

Book excerpt: This final technical report summarizes in a compact form the results of a two-year research program on the development of refined shear deformation theories of plates and shells, and their analytical solutions. The detailed results are reported in various reports and technical papers during the course of the project. A third-order, nonlinear shear deformation shell theory and finite element model that accounts for parabolic distribution of transverse shear stresses through thickness and the von Karman nonlinear strains was developed during an investigation sponsored by NASA Langley Research Center during the first year of this research. The most significant contributions of this research are: 1. The development of analytical solutions of the linear theory for various boundary conditions. The space-time concept is used to develop such solutions. 2. The development of finite element models for first-ply and post-first-ply failure analysis.

Book excerpt: The capability to predict the nonlinear response of beams, plates and shells when subjected to thermal and mechanical loads is of prime interest to structural analysis. In fact, many structures are subjected to high load levels that may result in nonlinear load-deflection relationships due to large deformations. One of the important problems deserving special attention is the study of their nonlinear response to large deflection, postbuckling and nonlinear vibration. A two-step perturbation method is firstly proposed by Shen and Zhang (1988) for postbuckling analysis of isotropic plates. This approach gives parametrical analytical expressions of the variables in the postbuckling range and has been generalized to other plate postbuckling situations. This approach is then successfully used in solving many nonlinear bending, postbuckling, and nonlinear vibration problems of composite laminated plates and shells, in particular for some difficult tasks, for example, shear deformable plates with four free edges resting on elastic foundations, contact postbuckling of laminated plates and shells, nonlinear vibration of anisotropic cylindrical shells. This approach may be found its more extensive applications in nonlinear analysis of nano-scale structures. Concentrates on three types of nonlinear analyses: vibration, bending and postbuckling Presents not only the theoretical aspect of the techniques, but also engineering applications of the method A Two-Step Perturbation Method in Nonlinear Analysis of Beams, Plates and Shells is an original and unique technique devoted entirely to solve geometrically nonlinear problems of beams, plates and shells. It is ideal for academics, researchers and postgraduates in mechanical engineering, civil engineering and aeronautical engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretical formulations, analytical solutions, and finite element solutions for laminated composite plate and shell structures with smart material laminae are presented in the study. A unified third-order shear deformation theory is formulated and used to study vibration/deflection suppression characteristics of plate and shell structures. The von Kármán type geometric nonlinearity is included in the formulation. Third-order shear deformation theory based on Donnell and Sanders nonlinear shell theories is chosen for the shell formulation. The smart material used in this study to achieve damping of transverse deflection is the Terfenol-D magnetostrictive material. A negative velocity feedback control is used to control the structural system with the constant control gain. The Navier solutions of laminated composite plates and shells of rectangular planeform are obtained for the simply supported boundary conditions using the linear theories. Displacement finite element models that account for the geometric nonlinearity and dynamic response are developed. The conforming element which has eight degrees of freedom per node is used to develop the finite element model. Newmark's time integration scheme is used to reduce the ordinary differential equations in time to algebraic equations. Newton-Raphson iteration scheme is used to solve the resulting nonlinear finite element equations. A number of parametric studies are carried out to understand the damping characteristics of laminated composites with embedded smart material layers.

Book excerpt: An analytical procedure is presented for determining the transient response of simply supported, rectangular laminated composite plates subjected to impact loads from airgun-propelled or dropped-weight impactors. A first-order shear-deformation theory is included in the analysis to represent properly any local short-wave-length transient bending response. The impact force is modeled as a locally distributed load with a cosine-cosine distribution. A double Fourier series expansion and the Timoshenko small-increment method are used to determine the contact force, out-of-plane deflections, and in-plane strains and stresses at any plate location due to an impact force at any plate location. The results of experimental and analytical studies are compared for quasi-isotropic laminates. The results indicate that using the appropriate local force distribution for the locally loaded area and including transverse-shear-deformation effects in the laminated plate response analysis are important. The applicability of the present analytical procedure based on small deformation theory is investigated by comparing analytical and experimental results for combinations of quasi-isotropic laminate thicknesses and impact energy levels. The results of this study indicate that large-deformation effects influence the response of both 24- and 32-ply laminated plates, and that a geometrically nonlinear analysis is required for predicting the response accurately. Book excerpt: Nonlinear transient global response of shear deformable composite laminated plates subjected to impact loading was investigated analytically and compared with linear transient global response, which was also reviewed in this study, and with existing experimental data. Based on energy equations derived by applying geometrical nonlinearity in strain-displacement relations, the impacted plate response model was developed employing the Lagrangian equations of motion and the Rayleigh-Ritz method in conjunction with assumed mode shapes. The resulting system of second-order nonlinear differential equations with respect to time was solved using the fourth-order Runge-Kutta numerical time integration scheme to produce a transient response in terms of force- and displacement-time histories at the point of impact where a nonlinear local contact law was assumed. Comparison between linear and nonlinear analysis clearly showed the importance of considering the geometrical nonlinear effect of membrane stiffening. Comparison of the analytical results with existing experimental data indicated that the nonlinear plate impact response model with partial geometrical nonlinearity accounting for the flexible boundary was able to predict the impact response well especially for the primary frequency response. However, the secondary frequency response predicted by the model showed relatively poor correlations with the existing experimental data. Further refinement needs to be done to bring this nonlinear impact response analysis into better agreement with the experimental data.

Book excerpt: Forced motions of laminated composite plates are investigated using a finite element that accounts for the transverse shear strains, rotary inertia, and large rotations (in the von Karman sense). The present results when specialized for isotropic plates are found to be in good agreement with those available in the literature. Numerical results of the nonlinear analysis are presented showing the effects of plate thickness, lamination scheme, boundary conditions, and loading on the deflections and stresses. The new results for composite places should serve as bench marks for future investigations.(Author).
