Book excerpt: Flexible and rigid pavements were constructed and tested to obtain data on pavement and soil behavior under large aircraft loadings for use in developing criteria for evaluating and designing airfield pavements subjected to multiple-wheel heavy gear loads (WMHGL). The test sections incorporated instrumentation systems designed to determine the response of the pavement structures to static, dynamic (slowly moving), and vibratory loads and to traffic by full prototype loadings of a 12-wheel assembly (one main gear of a C-5A aircraft), a twin-tandem assembly (one twin-tandem component of the Boeing 747 assembly), and a single wheel. Analysis of static load response data from the flexible pavement instrumentation program resulted in the establishment of maximum elastic deflection and vertical elastic stress versus depth curves. Comparisons showed that the same relationships were true for static and dynamic load tests, as well as for speed tests. The findings for the rigid pavement test section indicated that the Westergaard algorithm can be used for reasonable predictio of pavement response to test loadings. The data from the instrumentation program and the traffic tests were used in the analysis of the flexible and rigid pavement test sections. The analysis resulted in a modification of the basic flexible pavement CBR design method. (Author).

Book excerpt: This project is the most comprehensive single undertaking to date which is directed toward an evaluation of the validity of concepts of nondestructive evaluation of the load-carrying capacity of airfield pavements. Seven nondestructive test devices tested five sections of airfield pavements at MacDill Air Force Base (AFB) which consisted of two rigid, two flexible, and one composite pavements, ranging from 20-in. portland cement concrete (PCC) to 5.5- in. asphaltic concrete. Analytical treatments of the test data included empirical correlation analyses, and layered-elastic and finite element computer analyses. Six private firms each with a different nondestructive testing (NDT) evaluation method provided evaluation results in terms of allowable aircraft loads and overlay thicknesses. The Air Force produced one set of results using its new nondestructive pavement testing method, and Waterways Experiment Station provided three sets of results. This study has shown that NDT technology exists for evaluation of airfield pavements. For the pavements at MacDill AFB, some NDT evaluation methods agreed better with the standard test-pit method than others. However, the pavements at MacDill AFB are rather nontypical, and those NDT evaluation methods that did not give good results at MacDIll may give more agreeable results on different pavements. The lack of agreement between results of the NDT evaluation methods does justify concern and may point to the need for a standard evaluation method.

This book was released on 1976 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tests of the GATOR mine in various terrains within the United States indicated that a non-uniform sensitivity existed in its AP seismic sensor. It was demonstrated that soil characteristics can affect sensor sensitivity, causing the mine to detonate when the target is beyond warhead lethal range, or causing it not to detonate at all. Using computer models that were validated through field studies, this report attempts to predict the expected sensitivity of the GATOR AP seismic sensor. A terrain matrix, made up of elements describing surface and subsurface terrain layers that affect target-induced seismic signal generation and propagation, was developed to define environmental parameter variation. Computer model signals were generated using the matrix results for input to the GATOR mine logic. The results were utilized to define mine-performance changes over the environmental parameter ranges. Terrain property combinations which have major effects on source-to-ground energy coupling and seismic signal propagation were evaluated using microseismic generation and propagation models. The models were validated to verify if they could realistically predict, with sufficient sensitivity and reliability, time domain signals versus terrain characteristics.

This dictionary is an essential tool for professionals involved in the aerospace industry and flight, and for anyone who must read and understand the technical literature of the aerospace industry and about specific air and space craft. It is also an ideal reference for engineering and physics students encountering a subject replete with technical jargon and acronyms. Bill Gunston, one of the most widely read and respected aviation writers, has added more than 5,000 new terms and acronyms to this carefully updated volume. Terms used in the dictionary reflect the diverse and international nature of the aerospace industry and include brief explanations of aerospace materials and organizations. Gunston has scrupulously avoided terms specific to manufacturers, airlines, and armed forces in an effort to encourage clear communication and understanding among professionals.
