Book excerpt: Throughout history, training noncommissioned officers of the United States Army had been accomplished using on-the-job training (OJT) in the unit, and many believed that is where it should stay. Training noncommissioned officers was conducted by officers in the regiment and was the commanding officer's responsibility. It was accepted that unit training was the best means of developing noncommissioned officers and potential noncommissioned officers. It was not until the post-World War II era that NCO training was conducted outside the unit at specially designed schools and academies. The first Sergeant Major of the Army, William O. Wooldridge, noted that in those days a soldier had to provide for his own education and training. "I went to night school. There were no requirements to attend school if you didn't want to. Now you must get training, or you don't get promoted."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Noncommissioned Officer and Petty Officer BACKBONE of the Armed Forces. Introduction The Backbone of the Armed Forces To be a member of the United States Armed Forces--to wear the uniform of the Nation and the stripes, chevrons, or anchors of the military Services--is to continue a legacy of service, honor, and patriotism that transcends generations. Answering the call to serve is to join the long line of selfless patriots who make up the Profession of Arms. This profession does not belong solely to the United States. It stretches across borders and time to encompass a culture of service, expertise, and, in most cases, patriotism. Today, the Nation's young men and women voluntarily take an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States and fall into formation with other proud and determined individuals who have answered the call to defend freedom. This splendid legacy, forged in crisis and enriched during times of peace, is deeply rooted in a time-tested warrior ethos. It is inspired by the notion of contributing to something larger, deeper, and more profound than one's own self. This publication is available (Electronic version) in the official website of the National Defense University (NDU). This document is properly formatted and printed as a perfect sized copy 6x9".
Book Synopsis Noncommissioned Officer Education System (NCOES) by : Richard L. Wampler
Download or read book Noncommissioned Officer Education System (NCOES) written by Richard L. Wampler and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This research examined the viability of allowing noncommissioned officers (NCOs) to receive NCO Education System (NCOES) credit based on experience or testing-out. Surveys and interviews were completed with 164 participants, varying in rank from Lieutenant Colonel to Staff Sergeant. Participants were serving in duty positions ranging from U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command School Leaders and staff to actual NCO and Officer course instructors, at six Army installations representing 11 Schools. The majority (58%) agreed that testing-out of selected NCOES content is a viable option and 61% agreed that no credit should be awarded solely for experience. An overwhelming majority (90%) agreed that all NCOs should attend some resident NCOES classes to foster interpersonal relationships, 86% agreed that testing-out should include both hands-on and written components, and 85% agreed that all NCOs, active and reserve, should be handled the same concerning testing-out or receiving equivalent credit. Perspectives differed by rank group and duty position. Participants identified numerous educational, administrative, logistical, and sociological items that could be negatively impacted by testing-out. They also suggested some testing-out procedures that might mitigate potential impacts."--Page i.

Book excerpt: ADP 6-22 describes enduring concepts of leadership through the core competencies and attributes required of leaders of all cohorts and all organizations, regardless of mission or setting. These principles reflect decades of experience and validated scientific knowledge. An ideal Army leader serves as a role model through strong intellect, physical presence, professional competence, and moral character. An Army leader is able and willing to act decisively, within superior leaders' intent and purpose, and in the organization's best interests. Army leaders recognize that organizations, built on mutual trust and confidence, accomplish missions. Every member of the Army, military or civilian, is part of a team and functions in the role of leader and subordinate. Being a good subordinate is part of being an effective leader. Leaders do not just lead subordinates-they also lead other leaders. Leaders are not limited to just those designated by position, rank, or authority.

Book Synopsis Impact of the Army Continuing Education System (ACES) on Soldier Retention and Performance by : Paul J. Sticha
Download or read book Impact of the Army Continuing Education System (ACES) on Soldier Retention and Performance written by Paul J. Sticha and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This evaluation of the Army Continuing Education System (ACES) considered the following programs: (a) Tuition Assistance (TA); (b) Functional Academic Skills Training (FAST; (c) Military Occupational Specialty Improvement Training (MOSIT); (d) Noncommissioned Officer (NCO) Leader Skill Enhancement Courses; and (e) the Armed Forces Classification Test (AFCT). The assessment of the effectiveness of these programs is based on their ability to enhance soldier performance and increase the prospects of promotion, as well as to reduce attrition and increase reenlistment. The evaluation data came from a longitudinal administrative database that tracked a three-year accession cohort over a six-year period and an NCO database including self-reported participation in ACES programs, promotion information, and observed performance ratings. The analysis was designed to separate effects of participant characteristics from the effects of the program, and to control for differences in the opportunity and propensity to participate in ACES. Participation in TA and FAST were associated with an increase in the probability of first term reenlistment FAST participation was also associated with lower first-term attrition. Participation in several ACES programs showed positive effects on measures of performance and promotion potential.

Book Synopsis Training Requirements and Training Delivery in the Total Army School System by : John D. Winkler
Download or read book Training Requirements and Training Delivery in the Total Army School System written by John D. Winkler and published by RAND Corporation. This book was released on 1999 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report analyzes training requirements and school delivery of training in the Total Army School System, focusing on the system's ability to meet its training requirements in Reserve Component Training Institutions. Two types of training are the subject of this research. The first is the education of Reserve Component noncommissioned officers (NCOs). The second is reclassification training of soldiers who previously held one military occupational specialty (MOS) but who now need to be trained and qualified to hold a different MOS.' The report examines the execution year of Region C, where the "prototype" Total Army School System was established in the southeastern United States (FY95)-compared to the implementation year (FY94), as well as examining the prototype in relation to the overall system. The document also analyzes the impact of personnel policy changes that could enhance the training system's flexibility and effectiveness in meeting training requirements (i.e., by lowering turbulence to reduce demands on the system). This report is part of a larger effort by RAND Arroyo Center to analyze the performance and efficiency of the RC school system.
