Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the ten best religious books of 1968 . . . a fascinating proposal of revolutionary action through non-violence from the Judeo-Christian faith and the experiments in truth of Gandhi. 'New Book Review' 'The Non-Violent Cross' was a crucial text to push me into becoming a pacifist. It remains as relevant today as it was when first published in 1966. Douglass was in conversation not only with Catholic perspectives but also John Howard Yoder. Indeed he was among the first to show us how the most orthodox Christian claims committed the church to the practice of non-violence. We are in Wipf & Stock's debt for bringing the book back into print. Stanley Hauerwas, Duke University It will be Jim's reflections on nonviolence and just war theory for which he will be remembered best. And it is here that his language stretches, bends, and breaks under the strain of the inexplicable. For he is not just settling arguments. He is trying to convey the meaning of the kingdom of Reality which will be the final victory of Truth in history. If that kingdom is ever to come, it will be people like Jim who blazed the way. Walter Wink Not only is this book the most thoroughgoing treatment to date of non-violence...but in its analyses of the current scene it is also a 'tract for the times.' The Christian Century
Download or read book Violence written by Jacques Ellul and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-06-05 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On an issue that has created considerable uncertainty and uneasiness among many Christians, Jacques Ellul brings to bear the bold analysis and the brilliant clarity of argument that are associated with his distinguished studies on contemporary social questions. After surveying historically the various approaches of Christians to violence, Ellul examines in depth current statements by Christians condoning or accepting violence. He then contrasts, with penetrating insight, the dynamics of violence and the clear demands of the Gospel. In a concluding chapter he eloquently sets forth the truly distinctive nature of Christian radicalism and the violence of love.Of comfort to neither Right nor Left as such, this Gospel-centered study of the complex issue of violence today--deftly translated by Cecilia Gaul Kings--is a forceful, original contribution to the ongoing discussion of the issue in church and society.

Book Synopsis Acts of Conscience by : Joseph Kip Kosek
Download or read book Acts of Conscience written by Joseph Kip Kosek and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to the massive bloodshed that defined the twentieth century, American religious radicals developed a modern form of nonviolent protest, one that combined Christian principles with new uses of mass media. Greatly influenced by the ideas of Mohandas Gandhi, these "acts of conscience" included sit-ins, boycotts, labor strikes, and conscientious objection to war. Beginning with World War I and ending with the ascendance of Martin Luther King Jr., Joseph Kip Kosek traces the impact of A. J. Muste, Richard Gregg, and other radical Christian pacifists on American democratic theory and practice. These dissenters found little hope in the secular ideologies of Wilsonian Progressivism, revolutionary Marxism, and Cold War liberalism, all of which embraced organized killing at one time or another. The example of Jesus, they believed, demonstrated the immorality and futility of such violence under any circumstance and for any cause. Yet the theories of Christian nonviolence are anything but fixed. For decades, followers have actively reinterpreted the nonviolent tradition, keeping pace with developments in politics, technology, and culture. Tracing the rise of militant nonviolence across a century of industrial conflict, imperialism, racial terror, and international warfare, Kosek recovers radical Christians' remarkable stance against the use of deadly force, even during World War II and other seemingly just causes. His research sheds new light on an interracial and transnational movement that posed a fundamental, and still relevant, challenge to the American political and religious mainstream.

Download or read book Christians, Politics and Violent Revolution written by J. G. Davies and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-04-20 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an impressive attempt by a distinguished British theologian to grapple with problems put to him by friends from the Third World and particularly the question: "If there seems no way to alter a situation except by joining in violent revolution, is it possible to be involved and still remain a Christian?" In his discussion, Professor Davies first considers how far obedience is a constant imperative and in what circumstances disobedience may be the right choice. As resistance to the state is necessarily to act illegally, he then reviews the subject of law and order. To this point the considerations are largely theological. However, the climax of the book comes in a discussion of revolution in human terms, together with the criticisms often raised against it. There is also a survey of the means of revolution, non-violent and violent, and the basis of Christian moral choice in such a situation.

Book excerpt: Morality and Modern Warfare is a thought-provoking and insightful exploration of one of the most pressing ethical issues of our time. Written by William J. Nagle, a respected scholar and expert on ethics and war, this book challenges readers to consider the complex moral dilemmas that arise in the context of modern warfare. In this book, Nagle provides a detailed analysis of the ethical challenges facing soldiers, policymakers, and civilians in today's conflicts, from drone warfare and cyber warfare to the use of torture and targeted assassinations. He explores the tensions between national security and individual rights, as well as the moral implications of new technologies and strategies of warfare. Drawing on a wealth of historical and contemporary examples, Nagle argues that a nuanced and critical approach to morality in modern warfare is essential. He contends that a deeper understanding of the ethical dimensions of war can help us to develop more effective and just policies and practices. With its rigorous analysis and clear writing, Morality and Modern Warfare is an essential read for anyone interested in the ethics of war and the challenges of contemporary conflict. It is a valuable resource for scholars, students, policymakers, and anyone seeking to deepen their understanding of the moral complexities of modern warfare.
