This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New technologies constantly generate new demands for exotic materials to be used in severe environments. The rapid developments of aerospace industries during the last two decades have required new materials to survive extreme high and low temperatures and various radiations. The exploration of new energy sources, e.g., solar and geothermal, has led us to develop new solar collectors and geothermal devices. Even the search for new oils has demanded that we study the corrosive environment of oil fields. In the telecommunication industries, optical fibers have been adopted broadly to replace metallic conductors. However, none of the optical fibers can survive abrasion or corrosion without the application of a coating material. For microelectronics, protection in terms of coatings and encapsulants is deemed necessary to prevent corrosion. One of the major causes of corrosion has been shown to be water which appears to be abundant in our earthly environments. Water can attack the bulk adhesive (or sealant), the interface, or the adherend. Water can also cause delamination of coating film, and it is definitely the major ingredient in causing cathodic or anodic corrosion. Thus, water becomes the major obstacle in solving durability problems of various materials in harsh environments.

Book Synopsis Rehabilitation of Metallic Civil Infrastructure Using Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Composites by : Vistasp M. Karbhari
Download or read book Rehabilitation of Metallic Civil Infrastructure Using Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Composites written by Vistasp M. Karbhari and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-03-14 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites are becoming increasingly popular as a material for rehabilitating aging and damaged structures. Rehabilitation of Metallic Civil Infrastructure Using Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Composites explores the use of fiber-reinforced composites for enhancing the stability and extending the life of metallic infrastructure such as bridges. Part I provides an overview of materials and repair, encompassing topics of joining steel to FRP composites, finite element modeling, and durability issues. Part II discusses the use of FRP composites to repair steel components, focusing on thin-walled (hollow) steel sections, steel tension members, and cracked aluminum components. Building on Part II, the third part of the book reviews the fatigue life of strengthened components. Finally, Part IV covers the use of FRP composites to rehabilitate different types of metallic infrastructure, with chapters on bridges, historical metallic structures and other types of metallic infrastructure. Rehabilitation of Metallic Civil Infrastructure Using Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Composites represents a standard reference for engineers and designers in infrastructure and fiber-reinforced polymer areas and manufacturers in the infrastructure industry, as well as academics and researchers in the field. - Looks at the use of FRP composites to repair components such as hollow steel sections and steel tension members - Considers ways of assessing the durability and fatigue life of components - Reviews applications of FRP to infrastructure such as steel bridges
