Book excerpt: The contemporary manufacturing environment is characterised by increased worker responsibility coupled with the measurement and reporting of numerous aspects of performance. At shop-floor level much of this performance measurement and reporting is non-financial. This paper reports on a large scale, empirical investigation of the measurement practices in British factories at the beginning of the 21st century. Descriptive statistics are provided as well as a classification model of shop-floor non-financial measures. In addition, the relationships between operational measures and contingent firm-specific and external variables are identified. Various partial relationships are found, and 'across the board' high levels of shop-floor performance measurement are found to be associated with a severely competitive environment, an upward communication corporate ethos, and with the adoption of JIT or TQM/TPM.

Book excerpt: Performance Measurement and Management for Engineers introduces key concepts in finance, accounting, and management to project managers who have engineering backgrounds. It focuses these basic concepts on issues of measuring and managing enterprise value. Thus, after defining enterprise value, the book begins by explaining the ways and means of measurement. It then takes up financial measurement, describing and analyzing the typologies of financial indicators while illustrating their advantages and disadvantages. After focusing on measuring enterprise value, the second section takes up managing that value. Like the first, it pursues a double view: using indicators for internal control while employing them to analyze other companies. If engineering project managers possess a source of quantitative and qualitative information about business management, Performance Measurement and Management for Engineers will help them increase their contributions to the business. Explains how main performance indicators are related to the value of the company Reveals how to assess the financial needs of companies in relation to their financial goals and mechanisms (e.g., equity, debt, and hybrid) Describes key information and indicators for assessing the ability of enterprises to create value across time Indicates the profitability sources of different business units

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performance measurement remains a vexing problem for business firms and other kinds of organisations. This book explains why: the performance we want to measure (long-term cash flows, long-term viability) and the performance we can measure (current cash flows, customer satisfaction, etc.) are not the same. The 'balanced scorecard', which has been widely adopted by US firms, does not solve these underlying problems of performance measurement and may exacerbate them because it provides no guidance on how to combine dissimilar measures into an overall appraisal of performance. A measurement technique called activity-based profitability analysis (ABPA) is suggested as a partial solution, especially to the problem of combining dissimilar measures. ABPA estimates the revenue consequences of each activity performed for the customer, allowing firms to compare revenues with costs for these activities and hence to discriminate between activities that are ultimately profitable and those that are not.

Book excerpt: Measuring and managing the performance of a business is one of the most genuine desires of management. Balanced scorecard, the performance prism and activity-based management are the most popular frameworks in this setting. Based on the findings of R.G. Eccles’ acclaimed "Performance Measurement Manifesto (1991)" this book introduces new contexts and themes of application and presents emerging research areas related to business performance measurement and management, e.g. SMEs and sustainability. As a result of the 1st International Summer School Piero Lunghi on "Perspectives of Business Performance Management" this book is written both for students and academics, as well as for practitioners looking for new, yet proven ways to measure and manage business performance.

Book excerpt: Despite the development of innovative approaches to strengthen accountability and the quality of integrated reporting disclosures, stakeholders are increasingly demanding more objective and unambiguous data. Therefore, the use of non-financial performance measures that assist in collecting comparable information and the verification thereof by independent experts can help to establish trust in a firm’s communication with its stakeholders. Certainly, non-financial information should complement mandatory financial reporting to go beyond traditional financial ratios and link them to non-financial risks and achievements. This book examines the possibility of using information provided by performance measurement systems in the process of preparing integrated reports. It presents an overview of the integrated report from the supply side, which undoubtedly affects the quality and usefulness of the information presented as well as enhances the manner in which the data and analyses are suitable for independent assessment. The book looks at the ways in which various groups of stakeholders - management; those who prepare non-financial reports; investors - influence the scope of the key performance indicators (KPIs) used for integrated reporting purposes, and what categories of KPIs are the most significant. Further, it analyzes which performance measurement systems provide information for the different components of integrated reports. The book is interdisciplinary, its thematic scope is at the intersection of accounting, business reporting, and business management, and thus it provides an important source of knowledge for students, scholars, and researchers of economics, finance, and management. It will also be a valuable guide for those preparing integrated reports or other forms of non-financial reporting.

This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World-class manufacturing (WCM) emphasizes excellence through lean production practices of continuous improvement and is incorporated within the broad definitions of just-in-time (JIT) and total quality management (TQM). Increased profitability from implementation of these practices is generally assumed, yet empirical studies examining WCM practices and firm profitability report mixed results. One reason suggested for the lack of reported improved firm performance is the deficiency of management accounting systems to reflect appropriately operational improvements. This research examines whether the use of JIT and TQM, in conjunction with the use of non-financial performance tools for evaluating these practices, affects firm profitability. The survey data provide empirical evidence that investments in WCM practices of JIT and TQM, coupled with the complementary use of non-financial performance measurement tools, such as benchmarking and tracking manufacturing efficiency, contribute to higher financial performance.
