L'un des enjeux majeurs de cette échelle est de développer des nouvelles méthodes de manipulation parallèle pour réussir à assembler des objets de quelques centaines de micromètres avec un haut cadencement. A cette échelle, la robotique série est limitée par la fréquence et les phénomènes physiques mis en jeu. Il faut donc trouver de nouvelles solutions dédiées à ces échelles.Pour résoudre ce verrou scientifique, ce travail de thèse propose une approche originale autour d'un moyen opto-fluidique, en utilisant particulièrement un effet de fluide convectif appelé l'effet Marangoni. Cet effet est analysé, une plate-forme expérimentale est entièrement construite pour montrer son intérêt pour manipuler à haute vitesse des objets de différentes formes et de tailles et enfin l'automatisation du processus de manipulation est démontrée pour prouver que cette technique est entièrement parallélisable.Le premier chapitre s'attache à définir les différentes méthodes de manipulation sans contact, la manipulation par champ électrique, les pinces optiques, le mouillage électrique, la lévitation acoustique et finalement la manipulation à partir de mouvements thermiques d'un fluide Toutes ces méthodes sont comparées pour montrer que la méthode par convection thermique apparaît comme une solution prometteuse pour la manipulation sans contact parallèle d'objets de taille mésoscopique.Le second chapitre aborde la modélisation de ces effets et la mise en évidence de leurs propriétés multi-physiques au travers de simulations par éléments finis. En particulier, un rappel détaillé est proposé des différents modèles de mécanique des fluides et leur application à l'échelle microscopique c'est à dire à bas Reynolds est détaillée. Ensuite, la convection naturelle sur un problème simplifié et borné est analysée. De nombreuses simulations sont proposées et des comparaisons expérimentales sont données. Finalement, le problème de la convection fluidique est abordé pour montrer son intérêt dans le cadre de notre étude. Ainsi, les différents paramètres (hauteur et volume du liquide, propriétés du liquide, puissance convective, taille des objets) sont étudiés pour la conception optimale d'une plate-forme de micromanipulation sans contact.Le troisième chapitre s'intéresse à la conception de cette plate-forme robotisée. Il décrit les différents éléments composant cette dernière, le microscope optique, le laser et ses particularités, le scanner pour le déplacement du laser et les différents éléments de contrôle du système. De nombreux tests manuels sont alors proposés pour montrer le bien fondé de notre approche. En particulier, l'utilisation d'une caméra haute définition, sa calibration pour déterminer la relation image/déplacement cartésien et d'une analyse des données permet d'estimer les paramètres optimaux pour des vitesses de déplacement micro-objets de différentes tailles. De même, les efforts engendrés sont analysés à partir du principe fondamental et de la mesure de l'accélération instantanée des objets mis en mouvement. Des résultats prometteurs sont ainsi déterminés.Le quatrième chapitre s'intéresse à la robotisation et plus particulièrement à l'automatisation du processus de manipulation. A partir de différentes positions désirées, il s'agit de monter qu'un système totalement automatisé peut déplacement différents micro-objets, en parallèle, d'un point à un autre. Il s'agit de aussi démonter que ce phénomène physique peut être contrôlé de façon fine par un scanner et qu'il peut être utilisé pour engendrer des déplacements sur plusieurs. La problématique du temps réel et de la fréquence d'échantillonnage du système est ainsi abordée. Des outils sont développés et permettent de détecter des objets avec une rapidité et une résolution suffisante. Ce modèle est ensuite utilisé pour monter que le système est capable de suivre des objets de différentes tailles. Enfin, un exemple de parallélisme unique à cette échelle montre l'originalité et l'apport de ce travail.De nombreuses perspectives sont ouvertes par exemple en étudiant plus précisément la physique de la convection fluide, en s'intéressant à un scanner à fréquence propre beaucoup plus élevée pour intégrer des déplacements sur des populations plus élevées d'objets et finalement en s'intéressant à la vison ultra rapide biomimétique.Cette thèse ouvre une porte nouvelle sur la manipulation indirecte parallèle à haute vitesse d'objets mésoscopiques de différentes formes géométriques.

Ashkin, optical trapping and manipulation has been widely used in the interdisciplines of micro- and nano-photonics, biophotonics, biomedicine, etc. A conventional tool for optical trapping and manipulation is the conventional optical tweezer (COT), the core part of which is a free-space focused laser beam. However, manipulation with COTs has some limitations such as manipulation inflexibility, bulky structure, diffraction limitation for nanoparticles, and limited integration functions. The introduction of optical fiber-based optical trapping and manipulation has solved these limitations. Using optical fibers with different configurations, optical trapping and manipulation with multiple functions can be realised with high flexibility, precision, and integration. By launching laser beams with different wavelengths into the fiber, both the photothermal effect and optical force can be used for optical trapping and manipulation. For the optical force manipulation, both evanescent fields at the surface of a subwavelength optical fiber and light output from a fiber end can be used for optical manipulation. The manipulation with light output from a fiber end can be divided into dual fiber tweezers and single fiber tweezers. For single fiber tweezers, one can realise the stable trapping of single particles both in a contact and non-contact manner for further applications. In addition, single fiber tweezers can also be used for multiple particle trapping and cell assembly, which can further be used for the assembly of biophotonic components and devices. Furthermore, by placing microparticles, which act as microlens at the end facet of an optical fiber, the microlens can be served as a photonic nanojet. This fiber supported photonic nanojet can be easily used for the trapping and detection of nanoparticles and biomolecules. Optical fiber-based optical trapping and manipulation have the advantages of easy fabrication, compact configuration, flexible manipulation, easy integration, wide applicability, etc., which provides for a wide application of prospects in micro- and nano-photonics, biophotonics, and biomedicine.

Various applications are under development: microfluidic and lab-on-chip devices, soft gripping and manipulation of particles, colloidal and interfacial assemblies, fluidic/droplet mechatronics. The capillary action is ubiquitous in drops, bubbles and menisci, opening a broad spectrum of technological solutions and scientific investigations. Identified grand challenges to the establishment of fluidic microrobotics include mastering the dynamics of capillary effects, controlling the hysteresis arising from wetting and evaporation, improving the dispensing and handling of tiny droplets, and developing a mechatronic approach for the control and programming of surface tension effects. In this Special Issue of Micromachines, we invite contributions covering all aspects of microscale engineering relying on surface tension.
