Book excerpt: This book presents an analysis of eight non-classical problems of fracture and failure mechanics mainly obtained by research in the department of dynamics and stability of continuum of the S. P. Timoshenko Institute of Mechanics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NAS of Ukraine). It focusses on the application of the 3D (three-dimensional) theories of stability, dynamics, and statics of solid mechanics to the investigation of non-classical problems of fracture and failure mechanics.

Book excerpt: A consistent theory for thin anisotropic layered structures is developed starting from asymptotic analysis of 3D equations in linear elasticity. The consideration is not restricted to the traditional boundary conditions along the faces of the structure expressed in terms of stresses, originating a new type of boundary value problems, which is not governed by the classical Kirchhoff-Love assumptions. More general boundary value problems, in particular related to elastic foundations are also studied. The general asymptotic approach is illustrated by a number of particular problems for elastic and thermoelastic beams and plates. For the latter, the validity of derived approximate theories is investigated by comparison with associated exact solution. The author also develops an asymptotic approach to dynamic analysis of layered media composed of thin layers motivated by modeling of engineering structures under seismic excitation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume scientists and researchers from industry discuss the new trends in simulation and computing shell-like structures. The focus is put on the following problems: new theories (based on two-dimensional field equations but describing non-classical effects), new constitutive equations (for materials like sandwiches, foams, etc. and which can be combined with the two-dimensional shell equations), complex structures (folded, branching and/or self intersecting shell structures, etc.) and shell-like structures on different scales (for example: nano-tubes) or very thin structures (similar to membranes, but having a compression stiffness). In addition, phase transitions in shells and refined shell thermodynamics are discussed. The chapters of this book are the most exciting contributions presented at the EUROMECH 527 Colloquium “Shell-like structures: Non-classical Theories and Applications” held in Wittenberg, Germany.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is devoted to an up-dated exploratory survey of results concerning elastic cusped shells, plates, and beams and cusped prismatic shell-fluid interaction problems. It contains some up to now non-published results as well. Mathematically the corresponding problems lead to non-classical, in general, boundary value and initial-boundary value problems for governing degenerate elliptic and hyperbolic systems in static and dynamical cases, respectively. Its uses two fundamentally different approaches of investigation: 1) to get results for two-dimensional and one-dimensional problems from results of the corresponding three-dimensional problems and 2) to investigate directly governing degenerate and singular systems of 2D and 1D problems. In both the cases, it is important to study relation of 2D and 1D problems to 3D problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revised and updated edition of a book first published in 1972 has kept the general features of the first edition but as could be expected after two decades there are also substantial differences. For instance optimal design has been completely deleted as the developments in this field have been so great that it warrants a book in itself. The fundamental concepts based on Drucker's postulate rather than those of Prager's assumptions function have been introduced. Problems of cyclic loading have been given some more extensive treatment, both in the general theory and in applications. General indications and references have been added for reinforced concrete plates and shells. A general presentation of the yield condition for both plates and shells has been included and the section on the influence of axial force in plates has been almost re-written. Finally, a chapter has been added exclusively devoted to the numerical approach to limit load and shake-down load evaluation. Like the previous edition the book is directed towards engineering applications. The theory is rigorously developed and is therefore of great use to engineering students in plastic limit analysis. Furthermore, applications to metal and reinforced concrete plates and shells and to metal disks are treated by both analytical and numerical approaches.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Limit Analysis and Concrete Plasticity, Second Edition covers the most relevant topics related to plastic design methods, providing a reliable and superior alternative to existing empirical methods. Fully updated and containing more extensive coverage, this second edition includes numerical methods and computer code for solving problems, incorporating methods into Eurocode 2 - the common concrete standard for the whole of Europe. This edition: Emphasizes practical design, treating almost all the elementary concrete mechanics problems in such a way that the solutions may be directly applied by the designer Details the fundamental problems associated with so-called effectiveness factors Covers many new solutions to specific problems, including concentrated forces, shear walls and deep beams, beams with normal forces and torsional moments, and solutions dealing with membrane effects in slabs Simplifies the treatment of shear in beams and slabs without shear reinforcement or with a modicum of shear reinforcement Extends the chapters on joints and bond strength, showing how plastic theory offers reasonable solutions for most structural problems in reinforced concrete Limit Analysis and Concrete Plasticity explains the basic principles of plasticity theory and its application to the design of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures, providing a thorough understanding of the subject, rather than simply applying current design codes. This scientific understanding of the subject enables the design student or engineer to solve problems more effectively and safely.

Naghdi for his contributions to mechanics over the last forty years and more. It is offered in celebration of his long, productive career in continuum mechan ics; a career which has been marked by a passion for the intrinsic beauty of the subject, an uncompromising adherence to academic standards, and an untiring devotion to our profession. Originally, this issue was planned in celebration of Naghdi's 70th birthday, which occurred on 29 March 1994. But, as the papers were being prepared for the press, it became evident that the illness from which Professor Naghdi had been suffering during recent months was extremely serious. On 26 May 1994, a reception took place in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Berkeley, at which Naghdi received The Berkeley Citation (which is given in lieu of an honorary degree) and where he was also presented with the Table of Contents of the present collection. Subse quently, he had the opportunity to read the papers in manuscript form. He was very touched that his colleagues had chosen to honor him with their fine contributions. The knowledge that he was held in such high esteem by his fellow scientists brought a special pleasure and consolation to him in his last weeks. On Saturday evening, 9 July 1994, Paul Naghdi succumbed to the lung cancer which he had so courageously endured.
