In the formation of new words and other expressions, noun formation or nominalization has pride of place over the other word-classes. Shimelis Mazengia describes and contrastively compares, in considerable detail, the mechanisms which three major Ethiopian languages use to satisfy their needs for nominals at word, phrasal and clausal levels - in other words, the operations utilized for lexical, phrasal, and clausal nominalizations. The languages in question are the Semitic languages Amharic and Tigrinya, and the Cushitic language Oromo. However, Amharic is sometimes considered to have undergone significant Cushitic influence and is therefore often assumed to be structurally intermediate between Semitic and Cushitic. The description and analyses take tone into account for Oromo, as tone is considered to have some bearing on the nominalization processes of the language. The author is a native speaker of Amharic and Oromo and is also well acquainted with Tigrinya. His competence in the languages has helped him to insightfully deal with the description and analysis of the languages with a wealth of data.

Book excerpt: Recent scholarship has confirmed earlier observations that nominalization plays a crucial role in the formation of complex constructions in the world’s languages. Grammatical nominalizations are one of the most salient and widespread features of languages of the Americas, yet they have not been approached as foundational grammatical structures for constructions such as relative clauses and complement clauses. This is due to an imbalance in past scholarship, which has tended to focus on these constructions at the expense of the nominalization structures underlying them. The papers in this collection treat grammatical nominalizations in their own right, and as a starting point for the investigation of their uses in complex grammatical structures. A representative sample of Amerindian languages, with focus on South America, examines properties of grammatical nominalizations such as their multiple functions, their internal and external syntax, and their diachronic development. Among the far-reaching theoretical conclusions reached by the studies in this volume is that the various types of relative clauses recognized in the typological literature are actually no more than epiphenomena arising from the different uses of grammatical nominalizations.

It further defines criteria on the basis of which the organization of nominal functional structure can be determined. Moreover, it demonstrates how nominals split into several types, across languages and within a language, depending on the number and the type of functional projections they include. Furthermore, it substantiates the hypothesis that aspects of the syntax of DPs of nominative-accusative languages are strikingly similar to aspects of the syntax of ergative languages and discusses aspects of the syntax of the perfect. The chapters in this volume take stock of developments in this area and offer new perspectives on a range of issues, including the representation of morphological complexity in the syntax, the correlation of nominal affixes with different types of nominalizations, and the modelling of non-compositional meaning within syntactic approaches to word formation. Crucially, the contributors base their analyses on data from typologically diverse languages, such as Archi, Greek, Hiaki, Icelandic, Mebengokre, Turkish, and Udmurt, and explore the question of whether, cross-linguistically, nominalizations have a uniform core to their structure that can be syntactically described.
