Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nomenclature of Colors for Naturalists, And, Compendium of Useful Knowledge for Ornithologists In regard to the external anatomy or topography of a bird, a system as little complicated as possible is desir able. The one presented in this work, while substantially the same as that usually adopted, and Offering no innova tions, is considerably simplified, thereby greatly facilitating the acquirement by the student of a knowledge of this essential adjunct of descriptive ornithology. It is believed also that the figures representing the typical forms of color-markings, and of egg - contours, and the concordant scale of different standards of measurement, will also be found of great practical utility. The author has in every case endeavored to give the plainest possible definition Of a term consistent with accuracy. All expressions having reference solely to internal characters, and which therefore seldom if ever enter into ordinary descriptions of birds, have been ex cluded, though many anatomical and osteological terms occasionally employed in diagnoses Of the higher groups, and' others pertaining to the general treatment Of the subject, are considered and carefully defined. Book Synopsis Werner's Nomenclature of Colours by : Patrick Syme
Download or read book Werner's Nomenclature of Colours written by Patrick Syme and published by Smithsonian Institution. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A taxonomic guide to the colors of the natural world, with 13 palettes and 110 color swatches, cherished by artists and scientists for more than 2 centuries ”Before Pantone, there was Werner’s Nomenclature of Colours”—Architectural Digest This beautiful pocket-size facsimile is a charming artifact from the golden age of natural history and global exploration. In the pre-photographic age, almost all visual details had to be captured via the written word, and scientific observers could not afford ambiguity in their descriptions. In the late 18th century, mineralogist Abraham Gottlob Werner devised a standardized color scheme that allowed him to describe even the subtlest of chromatic differences with consistent terminology. His scheme was then adapted by an Edinburgh flower painter, Patrick Syme, who used the actual minerals described by Werner to create the color charts in the book, enhancing them with examples from flora and fauna. Werner's handbook became an invaluable resource for naturalists and anthropologists, including Charles Darwin, who used it to identify colors in nature during his seminal voyage on the HMS Beagle. Werner's terminology lent both precision and lyricism to Darwin's pioneering writings, enabling his readers to envision a world they would never see. This new facsimile edition complete with ribbon marker brings the classic work back to life.

This book centers itself around a biographical treatment of Ridgway, but even more important considers what it meant to be a professional and an amateur in biology in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, and shows how the field of ornithology was professionalized as evolutionary theory made its mark on the study of birds"--Provided by publisher.
