Book excerpt: Fluctuations are usually regarded as unwanted phenomena which mask signals that we need. Various techniques have been developed to suppress fluctuations or noise. In dealing with electronic devices we are always confronted with noise, which is classified as thermal noise, shot noise, generation-recombinant noise and 1/f noise. The first three noises are known well, the fourth is not so well known. 1/f noise has been a mystery for a long time since it was first observed by Johnson in 1925 in the low frequency part of the noise spectrum of an electrical current passing a vacuum tube.

Book excerpt: This fourth edition of the conference focused mainly on noise and fluctuations at the nanometer scale in electron devices, bio-materials, and mesoscopic systems. Since the first conference, the aim of the UPoN conferences is to provide a forum for researchers working on noise and fluctuations, where they can present and discuss their scientific problems with particular attention to those which resist solutions. Topics include: Theoretical frontiers on noise and fluctuations; experimental frontiers on noise and fluctuations; enhanced and suppressed shot noise; noise and coherence; noise and chaos; constructive role of noise; noise in biological systems; noise in devices; and noise in complex systems and non-Gaussian fluctuations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ?eld of applied nonlinear dynamics has attracted scientists and engineers across many different disciplines to develop innovative ideas and methods to study c- plex behavior exhibited by relatively simple systems. Examples include: population dynamics, ?uidization processes, applied optics, stochastic resonance, ?ocking and ?ightformations, lasers, andmechanicalandelectricaloscillators. Acommontheme among these and many other examples is the underlying universal laws of nonl- ear science that govern the behavior, in space and time, of a given system. These laws are universal in the sense that they transcend the model-speci?c features of a system and so they can be readily applied to explain and predict the behavior of a wide ranging phenomena, natural and arti?cial ones. Thus the emphasis in the past decades has been in explaining nonlinear phenomena with signi?cantly less att- tion paid to exploiting the rich behavior of nonlinear systems to design and fabricate new devices that can operate more ef?ciently. Recently, there has been a series of meetings on topics such as Experimental Chaos, Neural Coding, and Stochastic Resonance, which have brought together many researchers in the ?eld of nonlinear dynamics to discuss, mainly, theoretical ideas that may have the potential for further implementation. In contrast, the goal of the 2007 ICAND (International Conference on Applied Nonlinear Dynamics) was focused more sharply on the implementation of theoretical ideas into actual - vices and systems.

This book was released on 1995-04-26 with total page 770 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume constitutes the proceedings of the 13th International Conference on Noise in Physical Systems and 1/f Fluctuations (ICNF'95) held in Palanga, Lithuania, in the period 29 May - 3 June 1995.International conference of fluctuation phenomena has a rich history. Previous ones were held in St. Louis (USA, 1993), Kyoto (Japan, 1991), Budapest (Hungary, 1989), Montreal (Canada, 1983), etc. The conference proved to be successful in bringing together specialists in fluctuation phenomena in very different areas, and providing a bridge linking theorists and applied scientists involved in the design of new generation of electronic devices. Correspondingly, the volume covers fundamental aspects of noise in various fields of science and modern technology. Mesoscopic fluctuations, noise in high temperature superconductors, in nanoscale structures, in optoelectronic and microwave devices, fluctuation phenomena in biological systems and human body are in the spotlight.

Research activity on noise involves several quite different disciplines (physics, engineering, mathematics, biology, chemistry, signal theory, etc.) and requires both fundamental and technological scientific efforts. Advanced micro- and nanoelectronic devices and related circuites and applications, where noise constitutes a key performance limitation, is one of the fundamental interests.

Book excerpt: This volume provides a self-contained survey of the mechanisms presiding information processing and communication. The main thesis is that chaos and complexity are the basic ingredients allowing systems composed of interesting subunits to generate and process information and communicate in a meaningful way. Emphasis is placed on communication in the form of games and on the related issue of decision making under conditions of uncertainty. Biological, cognitive, physical, engineering and societal systems are approached from a unifying point of view, both analytically and by numerical simulation, using the methods of nonlinear dynamics and probability theory. Epistemological issues in connection with incompleteness and self-reference are also addressed.

Book excerpt: 'The Essential Tension' explores how agents that naturally compete come to act together as a group. The author argues that the controversial concept of multilevel selection is essential to biological evolution, a proposition set to stimulate new debate. The idea of one collective unit emerging from the cooperative interactions of its constituent (and mutually competitive) parts has its roots in the ancient world. More recently, it has illuminated studies of animal behavior, and played a controversial role in evolutionary biology. In Part I, the author explores the historical development of the idea of a collectivity in biological systems, from early speculations on the sociology of human crowd behavior, through the mid-twentieth century debates over the role of group selection in evolution, to the notion of the selfish gene. Part II investigates the balance between competition and cooperation in a range of contemporary biological problems, from flocking and swarming to experimental evolution and the evolution of multicellularity. Part III addresses experimental studies of cooperation and competition, as well as controversial ideas such as the evolution of evolvability and Stephen Jay Gould’s suggestion that “spandrels” at one level of selection serve as possible sources of variability for the next higher level. Finally, building on the foundation established in the preceding chapters, the author arrives at a provocative new proposition: as a result of the essential tension between competition and cooperation, multiple levels may be essential in order for evolutionary processes to occur at all.

It offers much more than the accessibility and authority of a primary text book, exploring topics ranging from the fundamental aspects of calcium signaling to its varied clinical implications. It presents comprehensive discussion of cutting-edge research alongside detailed analysis of critical issues, at the same time as setting out testable hypotheses that point the way to future scientific endeavors. The contributions feature material on theoretical and methodological topics as well as related subjects including mathematical modeling and simulations. They examine calcium signaling in a host of contexts, from mammalian cells to bacteria, fruit fly and zebrafish. With much of interest to newcomers to the field as well as seasoned experts, this new publication is both wide-ranging and authoritative.
