Book excerpt: ‘Nobody Dies Tonight’ is a collection of articles written by the author between May 2020 and April 2021 to serve as a fitness manual created by a runner during the Covid-19 pandemic. It is a humble tribute by him to all those who supported and encouraged each other to create a better world during the pandemic. All the articles were related to fitness and running. The author considered with deep conviction in his heart that the one probable reason why he came out a survivor in the pandemic was his penchant for running since 2008 as a 48-year-old. It took a certain amount of courage for the author to wake up early morning and run solo on remote roads, roof-tops, terraces, parking lots and inside his home during the lockdown. The author wrote the articles with three basic aspects in mind. One, to cover the scientific aspects of running, like running posture, running cadence, mechanics of breathing, lactate threshold and maximum oxygen uptake. Second, nutrition was covered under myths on carbohydrates, importance of vitamins and minerals, vegan diet and eating for better performance. Third, being a 60-plus runner, he made sure to include subjects on exercise and longevity, importance of sleep and the older runner. He was also candid enough to give his own interpretation of the pandemic both during 2020 and 2021 separately related to running. There was also a common-sense approach to selecting running shoes, understanding diabetes and a controversial deliberation on blood doping.

Book excerpt: Echoes of the fatal shots fired in Dallas on November 22, 1963 reverberate in this collection of seven stories set in Louisiana during the civil rights era. For a varied cast of characters--the artist in the title story who tells the tale of his sojourn at LSU during Kennedy's "brief and shining moment" through a retrospective of his paintings; the schoolteacher soon to be married grieving with her mother over the shattered dream of a charmed and happy First Family's life; the disabled man witnessing the killing of Oswald on the TV screen with a growing premonition of the coming darkness in the world; the lawyer, son of a Southern-born mother and a Yankee father, reliving the loss of his beloved wife in mourning the nation's loss; the African-American wife of a preacher praying to the ghost of her dead mother for solace; the woman who, in moving her family away, feels the place reach out and pull them back; the young couple transplanted from the Midwest entranced by the fairy-tale beauty and amusements of their new life who become caught up in the social upheaval of the times--the violent death of our youngest President is a crucible for the dawning of historical consciousness in the wake of the nation's loss of innocence. An Afterword traces the genesis and the thirty-three-year journey to the publication of this book of stories.

Book excerpt: The final collection of new poems from acclaimed poet James Longenbach, together with two previous volumes that confront mortality. Standing on the shore, preparing to journey into the unknown, James Longenbach wrote these final poems with astonishing courage and clarity. Seafarer opens with a gorgeous sequence in which the poet looks down on his life from above, as if he’s already left it behind. With prophetic perception, Longenbach reflects on the encroaching tide of mortality through myth and memory. This volume unites Seafarer with Forever (2021) and the National Book Critics Circle Award finalist Earthling (2017); the three works have a powerful symmetry in their recognition of the ordinary, extraordinary, and precarious experiences of love and loss.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In lucid, elegant poems, Forever contemplates love against the pressing question of mortality after a diagnosis of cancer. Praised for a voice with "the crystalline, transformative, pure pitch of a lyric poet" (Ilya Kaminsky), James Longenbach explores a life lived with the knowledge of its end in his sixth collection. These luminous, lyrical poems pose a question: Why did this poet once live as if he would live forever? And what does it mean to know that we will not? Forever explores the meaning of love, from its discovery in the first poem, "Two People," to its maintenance in the last, "Forever." In between, the volume explores the precariously imminent demise of all that we love—the finite lives of other people, the mortal beauty of Venice—all thrown into urgent relief by the poet’s own cancer diagnosis. Evoking "the vivid dailiness of domestic life…and the specificity and poignance" of memories, "these lyrics are intimately personal, achingly autobiographical" (Langdon Hammer, American Scholar). Forthright, moving, and wry, the poems in Forever look back gratefully—excitedly—on a lifetime of self-making and self-shattering events.
