Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Noble Womanhood This is not a matter of idle speculation. There is nothing more practical about which we can speak. What women actually are depends upon what they aim, aspire, will, and expect to be. What they will be in the coming centuries depends also upon what men wish them to be and believe they m be. Do women count themselves household drudges, men's servants or playthings? Are men content with the Child-world's valuation of their wives, sisters, and daughters? Wherever this is so, drudges, slaves, and toys women perforce remain. And men born of such women are doomed to stay with them in the dim child-world. The low thought of the value of womanhood has always been the condition of bar barism. This is none the less true to-day wherever men think meanly of women, whether in Turkey, in the slums of New York or London, or even in elegant drawing-rooms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of the Lives of Noble Women In selecting the subjects of his biographical sketches, the author has endeavoured to fix upon women who have been not less distinguished by their domestic than by their public virtues; upon women who have been Christians faithful to the end, and patriots firm in their loyalty to their country, as well as upon women illustrious as wives, mothers, daughters, or sisters. The sphere in which woman influences us for good is much wider than society sometimes supposes; and the pages of history record innumerable examples of her heroic devotion and constancy to a great purpose. It is well that these examples should be kept before the eyes of the younger female members of our families; and that they should be encouraged to aspire to a high standard of duty, while not forgetting that their true happiness will always lie within the home circle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Noble Woman, Vol. 1 of 3 Like other English towns Carlton Cross stands in a county, but instead of taking pride in their connexion with the particular province in which they are placed, its inhabitants, following in the steps of their forefathers, and countenanced by the general usage of the district for miles round, prefer to speak Of themselves as denizens Of the Border. From the energy with which they boast about the natural and social characteristics Of their Border - meaning thereby a line Of country in which three Of our richest counties impinge upon each other, so that a horseman may Spring into his saddle at Carlton Cross, after an early breakfast, and return to a mid-day dinner after a gallop through three provinces; and also from the tone of self-glorification with which they assert their claim to respect as Border-men - it would seem that to be born, bred, and placed in business on the extreme verge of an English county are conditions peculiarly favourable to the higher qualities Of our nature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Noble Deeds American Women: With Biographical Sketches of Some of the More Prominent This work was suggested by one of a similar character, entitled Noble Deeds of Woman, an English work, which contains but three references to American Women, two of which are of but very little importance. Only one article in the two works is alike, and that is the letter written by Mrs. Sigourney to the women of Greece, in 1828, in behalf of the ladies of Hartford. This failure to do justice to American women, may have been an oversight; be that as it may, a work of the kind here presented, seemed to be needed, and we regret that its preparation had not been assigned to an abler pen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Woman Pure and True and Noble May this be a moment of pride for us all even in the presence of that awful thing we call Death. We all sorrow now, but there are those to whom the load has come in almost crushing weight, and even with suddenness. The days of a year have passed away since last this dear one ceased to walk among the peo ple of this church. Bless those upon whom the blow has fallen with greatest severity, O God, and give unto those who walk among us yet strength to bear the days of mourning, for the days will not be many before we too will go hence and be no more. We thank Thee for her life filled, as it was, with gentle care and sweet ministry. Only those who came near to her know how rich that life was of the things that make for character, for righteousness, for blessed ness and for life. Grant, O God, that though no longer here, that spirit may abide, and that the things that have come out of her life, gracious, tender, sacred and sweet, may continue to abide among these people and bless them in the days that are yet to be. Give courage of heart, and hope, and joy, and life, and light unto him who loved her so much and whose heart is now heavy with sorrow. Some of us are thinking even now of other days of sadness, and of other dear ones, and the gates of memory swing open and the ood comes upon our souls as we think of those days, and of the loved ones who have been taken away; as we think of these things may the memory be sweet unto our souls and may it strengthen our spirit, and may we go forth from this holy place into the world again, better men, better women, better children, for meeting here this after noon and for having meditated upon the life and the character and the services of this one who has passed beyond the portals into the everlasting habitations. Second, that immorality is by 710 means the only evil having a social existence. If it be dangerous to believe and to teach these things, then is the author of this book a very great Sinner then is his book a very dangerous and immoral production. But if these things are true, and if it be right occasionally for a good purpose to speak the truth plainly, then is our book a very good and useful one. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Noble Deeds of Woman, or Examples of Female Courage and Virtue The pleasure experienced by the Author in perusing the scattered records of female excellence gave rise to the idea that an interesting selection might be made from them, and prove not only instructive but useful. The acknowledged superiority of example over precept con firmed this Opinion; and the ensuing narratives have been chosen as most suitable to the various conditions and trials of life. Woman, to whose fostering care the direction of infancy is intrusted, - to whom manhood is indebted for mental recreations and for consolation in difficulties, upon whom also man, in declining yea'rs, depends for solace and support, - too often betrays her incapacity to fulfil the important duties she is called upon to under take. When thus circumstanced, she frequently fails in the performance of a mother's tender obligations, and she not only loses the affections, but sinks in the estima tion, of her husband - or, immersed in the dissipations of society, she neglects to attend to those more sacred offices on which even her own happiness depends. To the just fulfilment of these, it is necessary she should think, feel, and act correctly; yet this cannot be expected, while the ornamental accomplishments, now cultivated with so much care, are allowed to supersede the more valuable acquirements. It has been the experience of the author that it is difficult year after year to get fresh topics for addresses to sodalities. In offering these papers to the public he has in mind first of all his brother clergy, hoping that they will find herein some suggestions for a series of interesting talks. More than that, he desires that the life of each of these great wives and mothers be known to all. One of the greatest glories of the Church is her noble womanhood. And to-day especially, when the world in many different ways is seeking to turn our women from the pursuit of the Christian ideal in wifehood and motherhood, there is need surely of recalling the in spiriting stories of these women who sought first of all the kingdom of God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Noble and Heroic Deeds of Men and Women, Vol. 10 We can best learn to hate cowardice and n groveling spirit by studying their opposites. Bravery and nobility of character have been honored and respected as long as man has existed; They are the cardinal virtues of true manhood or womanhood, and always com mand respect. It is a sacred duty of every person to make his life as grand and noble as possible; and there can be no better, no surer'manner of bringing this about than by instilling into the minds of the youth such examples as are grand and noble. To build a fine, abiding and beautiful architectural structure, in which proportion and grace are blended, the first thing that is done is to build well a good sub-structure, a foundation on which torest. Just so in forming a beautiful character. The first thing necessary is to have a pure mind; before which, as an entrancing mirror, are reflected the images and casts of noble deeds, heroic actions, and 'that nobility of character which is'universally respected. The province of this volume is then seen. We are not pretentious enough to claim originality in the major ity of the facts and incidents 'found in these pages. We have only aimed at an acceptable compilation, such as is found in no other work, and which the author and publishers believe will meet a demand long felt. We have had recourse to a large number of standard and antiquated works, from which we have drawn liberally. Many of the stories have been en tirely rewritten and modernized. If it shall be the means of inspiring any youth to better and renewed exertions, or to spur any one to better efforts, the aim of the compilers will have been amply met. To do good has been the motive in presenting this to' the public, and should it fail in this it will fail utterly. The actions and deeds herein recorded are worthy of study and imitation by all. An ambition to be noble is laudable. By a knowledge of the lives of the great, we can regulate our own course and steer star-guided over life's trackless ocean.
