Book excerpt: The preface of this book tells that even though voyages are called mere "trips," distant lands didn't get more familiar. As the world became more open and voyages more often, the differences between foreign lands and continents became more evident as ever. This truth remains topical even today, 120 years after these words were put down on paper. Now "With the World's Great Travelers" lets you make a personal voyage through distance and time and see the most outstanding example of travel history in the world's literature. The book consists of essays by multiple authors, like Edward A. Pollard, a notable American Journalist; Charles Darwin, a famous scientist; Meriwether Lewis, a renowned explorer, one of the leaders of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, William Howard Russell, the most celebrated foreign journalist in America during the times of the Civil War and many others. This work gives a deep insight into how the world and traveling looked a century ago.

Book Synopsis Curious Encounters by : Adriana Craciun
Download or read book Curious Encounters written by Adriana Craciun and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2019-02-07 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With contributions from historians, literary critics, and geographers, Curious Encounters uncovers a rich history of global voyaging, collecting, and scientific exploration in the long eighteenth century. Leaving behind grand narratives of discovery, these essays collectively restore a degree of symmetry and contingency to our understanding of encounters between European and Indigenous people. To do this the essays consider diverse agents of historical change, both human and inanimate: commodities, curiosities, texts, animals, and specimens moved through their own global circuits of knowledge and power. The voyages and collections rediscovered here do not move from a European center to a distant periphery, nor do they position European authorities as the central agents of this early era of globalization. Long distance voyagers from Greenland to the Ottoman Empire crossed paths with French, British, Polynesian, and Spanish travelers across the world, trading objects and knowledge for diverse ends. The dynamic contact zones of these curious encounters include the ice floes of the Arctic, the sociable spaces of the tea table, the hybrid material texts and objects in imperial archives, and the collections belonging to key figures of the Enlightenment, including Sir Hans Sloane and James Petiver.

Download or read book Representations of Global Civility written by Sascha R. Klement and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2021-05-31 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps unexpectedly, English travel writing during the long eighteenth century reveals a discourse of global civility. By bringing together representations of the then already familiar Ottoman Empire and the largely unknown South Pacific, Sascha Klement adopts a uniquely global perspective and demonstrates how cross-cultural encounters were framed by Enlightenment philosophy, global interconnections, and even-handed exchanges across cultural divides. In so doing, this book shows that both travel and travel-writing from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries were much more complex and multi-layered than reductive Eurocentric histories often suggest.
