Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This massive collection brings together the entire body of Robert W. Chambers' weird fiction works including material unprinted since the 1890's. Chambers is a landmark author in the field of horror literature because of his King in Yellow collection. That book represents but a small portion of his weird fiction work, and these stories are intimately connected with the Cthulhu Mythos -- introducing Hali, Carcosa, and Hastur. Short stories from The King in Yellow, The Maker of Moons, The Mystery of Choice, The Tracer of Lost Persons, The Tree of Heaven, and two complete books, In Search of the Unknown and Police!!! This book contains all the immortal tales of Robert W. Chambers, including "The Repairer of Reputations," "The Yellow Sign," and "The Mask." These titles are often found in survey anthologies. In addition to the six stories reprinted from The King in Yellow (1895), this book also offers more than two dozen other stories and episodes, about 650 pages in all. These narratives rarely have appeared in print. Some have not been published in nearly a century. A Chambers novel, The Slayer of Souls (1920), is not included in this short story collection.

Book excerpt: “Thursday morning. One hundred pounds overweight, no man in sight, and rounding the bend to 57 years old—a full-blown catastrophe.” What happens when you realize you’ve had the career of your dreams, but you don’t have the life of your dreams? This was the stark reality facing Sheri Salata when she left her twenty-year stint at The Oprah Winfrey Show, Harpo Studios and the OWN network. She had dedicated decades to her dream job, and loved (almost) every minute of it, but had left the rest of her life gathering dust on the shelf. After years of telling other people’s makeover stories, Sheri decided to “produce” her own life transformation. And this meant revisiting her past, excavating its lessons, and boldly reimagining her future. In these pages, she invites readers along for the ride—detoxing in the desert, braving humiliation at Hollywood’s favorite fitness studio, grappling with losses, reinventing friendships, baring her soul in sex therapy, and more. Part cautionary tale, part middle-of-life rallying cry, Sheri’s stories offer profound inspiration for personal renewal.

Book excerpt: Dark, brilliant fiction from the New York Times-bestselling author: “Oates’ spookiness is visceral, psychologically involving, and socially astute.”―Booklist In the title story of her taut new fiction collection, Joyce Carol Oates writes: Life was not of the surface like the glossy skin of an apple, but deep inside the fruit where seeds are harbored. There is no writer more capable of picking out those seeds and exposing all their secret tastes and poisons than Oates herself—as demonstrated in these six stories. One tale opens with a woman, naked except for her high-heeled shoes, seated in front of the window in an apartment she cannot, on her own, afford. In this exquisitely tense narrative reimagining of Edward Hopper’s Eleven A.M., 1926, the reader enters the minds of both the woman and her married lover, each consumed by alternating thoughts of disgust and arousal, as he rushes, amorously, murderously, to her door. In “The Long-Legged Girl,” an aging, jealous wife crafts an unusual game of Russian roulette involving a pair of Wedgwood teacups, a strong Bengal brew, and a lethal concoction of medicine. Who will drink from the wrong cup, the wife or the dance student she believes to be her husband’s latest conquest? In “The Sign of the Beast,” when a former Sunday school teacher’s corpse turns up, the blighted adolescent she had by turns petted and ridiculed confesses to her murder—but is he really responsible? And another young outsider, Horace Phineas Love, Jr., is haunted by apparitions at the very edge of the spectrum of visibility after the death of his tortured father in “Night-Gaunts,” a fantastic ode to H.P. Lovecraft. “Consummately well-written, stylistically dashing...forthrightly nightmarish.”―Kirkus Reviews

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the surface, menace lurks in many of the stories in Brain Food and Other Tales. Some of these disturbing stories seem to be based on fact. All are surprisingly difficult to forget. The short story "Brain Food" tells of a distressed woman who happens on an unbelievably cruel and callous way of ridding herself of her violent, drunken husband. "Cottage Pies" appears to be set within an idyllic village, but all is not as it seems. Soon, a shockingly brutal child murder and rape shatter the tranquility. The villagers take matters into their own hands in determining the culprit and inflicting a suitable penalty.Yet another story, "Asudem," tells of a traveller's meeting on an idyllic Greek island with a beautiful, sophisticated woman that gives every indication of proving to be the start of a truly rewarding relationship. Instead, it is the prelude to a tale that takes a different, horrific direction."Never Say Die" illustrates that there may be worse things than dying. Far from bringing peace and relief from a ghastly terminal illness, death instead brings the most horrible transformation. In contrast, "My Good Friend Sam" tells a story of true friendship, but still offers an unpredictable ending.

Growing up in rural Zimbabwe, we would sit around the fire in our mud hut after dinner and listen to my grandmothers storytelling long into the night. This book is a collection of different folktales that happened a long time ago, somewhere deep in the forests of Zimbabwe. The folktales sometimes feature some interaction between and among animals and sometimes a combination of animals and humans. The folktales are didactic in nature, thus they often end up depicting important life lessons.

This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1960, four of us, students at Atlanta (Michigan) High School, embarked on a pulpwood cutting operation as a way to earn spending money for the coming school year. While scrounging around my dad’s sawmill shed for some tools to use in our enterprise, we found an old sign painted by one of his lumberjacks. It read, “CAN’T HARDLY LUMBER COMPANY.” Not then realizing how prophetic it would be, we took the sign for our pulpwood site. Our experiences that summer, mostly humorous in hindsight, provided the grist for several of the stories and vignettes in this volume. Others chronicle Betty Powell’s 1942 joke on the sheriff, Doug King’s barn-raising bee, and the great porcupine hunt of 1956. All provide a glimpse into northern Michigan life as we experienced it back in the day. After graduating from Atlanta (Michigan) High School in 1961, DAN STEVENS earned B.S. and M.A. degrees from The University of Michigan and a Juris Doctor from T.M. Cooley Law School. He returned to Montmorency County as a businessman and lawyer and represented northeastern Michigan in the Michigan House of Representatives for two terms. Later he served as a policy coordinator for the Florida Governor and was the County Attorney for Hendry County, Florida, over thirteen years. He and his wife Sarah now split their time between Atlanta, Michigan, and Tallahassee, Florida.
