Book excerpt: Stop Tweeting and Go to Sleep, Mr. President (the all-ages edition of the similarly-named book by the same author) is a bedtime book for civilized citizens who live in the real world, where a few snoozing kitties and cutesy rhymes don't always send the 45th President of the United States sailing blissfully off to dreamland. Unaffectionate and radically desperate, end-of-their-rope author John Spreincer McKellyanne Huckamucci's verses perfectly capture the familiar--and unspoken--tribulations of putting your little president down for the night. With illustrations by John Spreincer McKellyanne Huckamucci, Stop Tweeting and Go to Sleep, Mr. President is horrifying, hopeless, and tear ducts-wettingly sad--a book for Americans new, old, and expectant. You probably should not read it to your president.

Book excerpt: Mr. President, Say What?! is a collection of Op-ed pieces. As the title would suggest sometimes what is broadcasted, whether on Twitter or verbally, is almost unbelievable. Maybe you, like me, would like to have an opportunity to speak directly to the President and suggest that he take some other course of action or, at least, tone down his rhetoric and control his tongue. Included in these pages are some of the issues which have troubled me the most. You might find solace in that someone else is as concerned as you are. For some, you might find this is book is similar to the driver who is cut off on the freeway and verbally unleashes on the offender. If nothing else, the exercise momentarily cleanses the senses. As you read these short musings maybe you too will have the opportunity to rant and rail and in so doing so bring relief to your own angst. Regardless, you will not always agree with the me. In fact, you may find I did not go far enough or went too far. That is alright. After all, we are Americans with the right to express our opinion. As has often been said, we can disagree without being disagreeable. This is a conversation and a discussion not a monologue or a diatribe. We have enough of the latter and not near enough of the former. Drop me a note at [email protected] with your own comments and observations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Helen Thomas has covered the administrations of ten presidents in a career spanning nearly sixty years. She is known for her famous press conference closing line, "Thank you, Mr. President," but here she trades deference for directness. Thomas and veteran journalist Craig Crawford hold nothing back as they use former occupants of the White House to provide a witty, history-rich lesson plan of what it takes to be a good president. Combining sharp observation and dozens of examples from the fi rst presidency through the forty-fourth, the authors outline the qualities, attitudes, and political and personal choices that make for the most successful leaders, and the least. Calvin Coolidge, who hired the fi rst professional speechwriter in the White House, illuminates the importance of choosing words wisely. William Howard Taft, notorious for being so fat he broke his White House bathtub, shows how not to cultivate a strong public image. John F. Kennedy, who could handle the press corps and their questions with aplomb, shows how to establish a rapport with the press and open oneself up to the public. Ronald Reagan, who acknowledged the Iran-Contra affair in a television address, demonstrates how telling hard truths can earn forgiveness and even public trust. By gleaning lessons from past leaders, Thomas and Crawford not only highlight those that future presidents should follow but also pinpoint what Americans should look for and expect in their president. Part history lesson, part presidential primer, Listen Up, Mr. President is smart, entertaining, and exceedingly edifying.

Book excerpt: Who better to face the greatest evil of the 20th century than a humble man of faith? As Adolf Hitler and the Nazis seduced a nation, bullied a continent, and attempted to exterminate the Jews of Europe, a small number of dissidents and saboteurs worked to dismantle the Third Reich from the inside. One of these was Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a pastor and author. In this New York Times bestselling biography, Eric Metaxas takes both strands of Bonhoeffer's life--the theologian and the spy--and draws them together to tell a searing story of incredible moral courage in the face of monstrous evil. In Bonhoeffer, Metaxas presents the fullest account of Bonhoeffer's life, including his: heart-wrenching decision to leave the safe haven of America to return to Hitler's Germany involvement in the famous Valkyrie plot and in "Operation 7," the effort to smuggle Jews into neutral Switzerland lifelong dedication to sharing the tenets of his faith This edition, revised and with a new introduction from the author, shares the deeply moving story through previously unavailable documents, including personal letters, detailed journal entries, and firsthand personal accounts to reveal never-before-seen dimensions of Bonhoeffer's life and work. Praise for Bonhoeffer: "Metaxas has created a biography of uncommon power--intelligent, moving, well researched, vividly written, and rich in implication for our own lives. Or to put it another way: Buy this book. Read it. Then buy another copy and give it to a person you love. It's that good." --Archbishop Charles Chaput, author, First Things "Metaxas tells Bonhoeffer's story with passion and theological sophistication." —Wall Street Journal "Metaxas presents Bonhoeffer as a clear-headed, deeply convicted Christian who submitted to no one and nothing except God and his Word." --Christianity Today "Metaxas has written a book that adds a new dimension to World War II, a new understanding of how evil can seize the soul of a nation and a man of faith can confront it." --Thomas Fleming, author, The New Dealers’ War
